' DISPENSING DEVICE Filed March 13 1922 INVENTOR JJITNIESSi ATTORNEY Patented .l une 17, 1924.
ARTHUR FLGM, 0F ATHELSTONE, WISCONSIN.
DSPENSINi-l' DEVCE.
Application filed March 13, 1922.
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, ARTI-run FLOM, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Athelstone, in the county or" Marinette and State ot lisconsin7 have invented new and useitul Improvements in Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to brushes, particularly those of the fountain type and has for its object the provision of a novel tooth brush having a handle within which is stored the tooth paste or other cleansing material, the handle being provided with means for expelling the material through the brush, the device having the great advantage ot eliminating the necessity of squeezing out a certain quantity of paste or the like on to the tace ot' a brush as is the usual practice.
An important object is the provision ott a fountain brush of this character which is so constructed that it may be quickly and easily lilled with the contents of a commercial package of tooth paste or the like, the handle being hollow for this purpose and the expelling means being removable.
A further object is the provision o1' a device of this character which will be economical as it will prevent the drying up of the material and which will be sanitary as protecting the material from contact with the hands or with the air until it is pressed out onto the brush.
An additional object is the provision of a device oit this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to operate, e'llicient and durable in service and general improvement in the art.`
With the above and other objects and advai'ltages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more 'fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 a side elevation of the brush complete,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view,
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the operation of filling the paste chamber,
vFigure f1- is a cross section on the line -lf-t of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 'the numeral 10 designates a cylindrical hollow body which has one end open and formed with a threaded reduced flange 11 and which has its other end :termed with a Serial No. 543,251.
reduced externally threaded extension 12 having a threaded hole 13 therein. The numeral 14 designates a back having one end externally threaded and engaged within the hole 13. Secured to the back in the usual manner are the bristle tufts 16 which may have their working faces of any desired. configuration. The back is formed with a longitudinal channel 17 which communicates with holes 18 leading into or among the bristle tufts.
Screwed upon the flange 11 is a vtubular member 19 which has both ends open and which has its inner wall threaded. Rotatably mounted upon one end of this member is an operating cap or button 20 which is flanged to extend over the member 19 and which carries a pair o1t spaced guide rods 21 having their ends connected by a disk 22 through which is slidable a stem 23 having one end provided with a plunger head 24tand having its other end carrying a cross head 25 extending between and beyond the guide rods 21 with its opposite edges notched as shown at 2G and engaging the threads within the member 19. The plunger head 24C is of suoli size as to slide readily within the body 10.
ln order to lill the body 10 with tooth paste it is necessary to unscrew the member 19 from engagement therewith after which a tube of tooth paste may have its open end disposed within the flanged end ot the body 10. By squeezing the tube A oil tooth paste and rolling up its butt end in the usual manner the entire contents will be discharged into the body 10. The member 19 is then screwed on to the liange 11 and it is to be noted that bet'ore 'this is done the plunger 21- should be moved to its retracted position,
that is: with the cross head Q5 disposed immediately adjacent the operating cap or button 20. lVhen it is desired to use the brush, rotation otA the cap orr button will cause the guide rods 21 to rotate the cross head. 25 plunger 23. Owing to the l'act that the cross head 25 is formed with the notches 26 engaging the threads on the interior of the member 19, the rotary movement will cause the plunger 24 to be advanced into the body 10 and to exert pressure upon the mass ot tooth paste therein. This will result in torcing the tooth paste through the channel and out through the holes 18 among the bristle tufts. The brush may then be used in the ordinary manner. After all the paste has been consumed the member 19 is removed and the same operation ot refilling gone through with..
I prefer to employ a cap 27 for the purpose of enclosing the brush head when the device is not in use and this cap yhas Aone endA internally threaded and screwed upon the externally threaded extension l2 of the body. The other end of the cap is closed and may be provided with a ring 28 by means o'l' which the device may 'be suspended from a nai'l or hook in the lava-tory, and it may be advantageous to provide a clip 29 on `the cap by ineunsl oi' which the device may be retained Within the pocket in case it is desired to carry it around. A y y Y From the foregoing description and ar Study of the drawings it will. bewapparent that I have thusjprovided a simply'emrstrueted and consequently 'inexpensive tou-x21- tain tooth brush Within which the paste is contained. at all tunes ready Yfor use `and that the ldevice will :be a distinct Couvenlence and will avoid the )annoyance et hanl d'lingtlie Well kiio'wn colla-ps-iblepaste tubes which. `so vfrequently become clogged or tended.y
:form all the functions lfor Whichi-tfis in-f Vhile I have show-n and described the 'prel' 'erred embodiment of the invention, it is ol" course to be understood that I' reserve the right t0 make such changes m the form, oo nstruction and arrangement of parts as Will not depart `from the spi-rit of the invention or lthe scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim: y
l. In a Idevice of the character described, a hollow body adapted to contain a semi liquid material, a discharge nozzle at one end of the body, a transverse support Within the body, a plunger located Within the body between said support and the nozzle, a stem on which said plunger is supported, a pluralityl of guides carried 'by said support, a cross head on` the stem slidable along said kguideshone end` portion of the body bei'ng internally threaded and the ends of the cross head being engaged with the threads, and-a cap-rotatable upon the end oit the body mostremote trom 'the nozzle andsecured t0 `said guides".
Q. I ny 'a ispeirsijrglg` device, an elongatedtubularbody provided' at one end with a nozzle `and `adapted,to contain send-liquid material, fa tubular shell detachably eenneeted with said body and internal-ly threaded, a transverse partition Wit-hin the shell at its juncture Withftl-ie body, `guide rods secured in said,partition/,iaplunger operating within the body and' carried by a stem slidable through the partition, a cross head on thevsteml slidablje alongnsaid guide rods, and having4 threaded ends engaging the interior et the shell, and a'cap'rotatably mounted on the fouter yend` of the shellan'dv secured to said guide rods.v l
. I-n testimony whereof I afixmy signature.
ARTHUR Fil-0M.
