Description

^ C. H. GRACEY TOOTHBRUSH Filed Jan. 2. 1923 Patented Oct. 28, 1924.
UNITED sTATEs CLAYTON H. GRACEY, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
TOOTHBRUSH.
Application med January 2, 1923. serian No. 610,336.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLAYTON I-I. GKACEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothbrushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to tooth brushes and relates particularly to brushes for cleaning the inner or lingual faces of the teeth. f
The invention consists in the structural features hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a View in side elevation of the improved brush indicating in dash lines a tooth engaged by the brush;
Figure 2 is a top View of the saine again showing in dash line the teeth which the brush is in position for cleaning;
Figure 3 shows the brush in perspective.
In these views the reference character A designates a` handle and B an integral brush head, said parts being formed of any suitable material. C is a slight arch formed in the handle A in proximity to the head B to permit the handle to clear the points of the teeth when the inner faces of the latter are being cleaned. D indicates bristles oppositely pro'ecting from the lateral faces of the head and E designates bristles projecting from the end face of said 'head adjacent the handle, the latter bristles being in part located beneath the arch C. A continuous row of bristles is formed by the bristles D and E jointly, said row extending along the lateral faces of the head and across its end face adjacent the handle. The latter face is radually curved to better conform to the jaw curvature of the teeth.
v'Ihe described brush is adapted for use 1n cleaning the inner or lingual faces of either the upper or lower teeth, the lateral 4bristles D being utilized to engage the back teeth. and the end bristles E being best adapted for engagement with the front teeth. The mounting of the bristles transverse to the engaged faces of the teeth has vthe effect of stimulating the soft tissue investing the teeth and further exerts a very effective cleansing effect. The provision of a continuous row of bristles extending both upon the lateral faces of the brush head and upon the end of said head adjacent the handle permits the interior faces of all of the teeth-to be very readily cleaned, this resultbeing obtained without any' angular manipulation of the brush but by merely shifting the same across the teeth and forward and back thereupon.
These features greatly facilitate the personal oral prophylaxis of the user.v
, What I claim as my invention is l. A tooth brush comprising a head, bristles extending from lateral faces thereof, a
handle connected to one end of the head by a portion arched sulliciently to clear the teeth and to permit freedom of movement of the bristles upon the inner faces of the teeth, said head and handle lying below the arched portion.
2. A toot-h brush comprising a head, bris- 75 tles extending from lateral faces thereof and also from the front face of the head, a handle connected to one end of the head by a portion arched above the bristles projecting from' said front face, said arch be- 80 ing sufficient to clear the teeth and to permit freedom of movement of the bristles upon the inner faces of the teeth, said head and handle lying below the arched portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
\ CLAYTON H. GRACEY.
