KENNETH F. MACLELLAN, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR TO CmCAGjO CARTON COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION.
CARTON.
Appucatin mea september 1c, 1921. serial No. 501.017.
To alZ whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, KENNETH F. MAC- LnLniN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the'county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain ynew and useful Improvements in Cartons,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cartons and has reference particularly to covers and carrying handles therefor.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide an improved carton cover; to construct the cover of two sections, oneorboth of which may be opened to afford access to l the interior of the carton; to opiositely incline the sections so as to afior a peaked cover; to provide an improved handle. for the carton; to mount the handle at the ridge of the peaked cover; to construct the handle so that. it stands up above the cover; to afford a. strong handle which is securely connected to the cover; to utilize a two-ply handle the two parts of which are connected respectively to the two sections of the cover;
" l to form the handle integral with and intermediately of the cover sections; and in general to provide animproved carton which is inexpensive, easily constructed and of a more desirable form than cartons heretofore provided.
On the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton constructed in accordance with .my inven; tion.
F ig. 2,u a transverse sectional view taken substantially midway between the ends of the carton, and v Fig. 3, a plain view of the blank form which the carton, carton cover and handle are formed.
The carton is illustrated as composed o f a single blank, as this is the construction which I prefer, and the blank has sections 1 and 2, which, when the .blanks folded, form the side walls of the carton, and sections 3-and 4 which form the end walls. These sections are bent at right angles to one another along the lines 5, 6 and 7 into rectangular form,
`and the section 1 hasa flap 8 at the end The end walls 3 and 4 of theicarton are preferably formed with peaked upper ex? tremities, as shown, forming gables with opp-ositely inclined edges 20 and 21, and a cover composed of sections 22 and 23, which assume an angular relation corresponding to the peaked upper endsof the wall sections 3 and 4, is hinged to the side wall l-along the line 24 so as to close the top of the carton. The cover sections 22 and 23 are spaced apart in the blank and connected by corresponding reversely extending handle sections 25 and 26 which are united along their V crown edges, and adapted to foldv upon one another along the line 27 and have their ends connected with the respective cover sections and adapted to fold along the lines 28 and 29, forming a cover and two-ply handle as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To insure proper interferlitting of the upper edges of the cover sections 22 and 23, the cut-out segment of the blank within the handle section 26 is not removed from the cover section 23 as inthe case of the cover section 22, but is retained and bent at'an angle to the cover section22 to form a ap tions are held edge to' edge at their upper extremities by a seallor sticker 31 which is placed through the handle opening, and cemented tothe cover sections.
The cover section 22 is preferably provided with end flaps 32 which fold along the lines 33 and are inserted at the inner sideiof the end walls 3 and 4 when the carton cover-.is closed, and each of these end walls has a ap\34 extending along the edgev 21 and adapted to be bent inwardly to form au'est for the cover in the closed position. These aps 32 and 34 serve to'aord a more` effective closure by covering the gaps that may occurO between the cover sections and the end walls of ,the carton.
For holding the carton cover in the closed position, there is a :Hap 35 along the outer edge of the covery section 23 which folds along the line 36 and is adapted to be inlUU serted' at the inner side of the side wall 2 of the carton, this Hap being retained 1n the inserted position by the lower edges of thev section. The blanks are easily and quickly assembled and the cover, being composed of two hinged sections, permits the section 23 alone to be opened up, or the entire cover consisting. of sections 22 and 23 may be opened.
While I have shown and described my invention in a. preferred form, I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made-without departing from the principles of my invention, the scope of which should be determined by reference to the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A folding carton comprising sides and ends connected together to form a tubular body, folding aps forming a flat bottom, and a top closure comprising two cover sections meeting edge to edge, corresponding handle sections integrally hinged to the meeting edges ofl saidL cover sections and tuck-in flaps on said cover sections for removably holding the same in place.
2. A folding carton comprising sides and ends connected together to form a tubular body, folding flaps forming a flat bottom, and a top closure integrally hinged to one ends connected together to form a tubular body, foldable flaps forming a fiat bottom, said ends havingpeaked upper edges, a peaked cover comprising two sections meeting edge to edge along a ridge, correspond ing handle sections at the meeting edges of said cover Asections and integrally united therewith and tuclvin aps on said cover sections for holding the same in place.
4.' In a carton, the combination with a tubular body of a cover integrally hinged to one wall of the body and comprising a pair of sections and a two-ply handle at the juncture of the two sections, the layers of which are integrally connected with each other and one such ply with each of the cover sections. l
5. A cartonhaving side and end Walls connected to form a tubular body, a co ver hinged to on-e wall only of the body and comprising two sections and a two-ply handle, the plies of which are integrally connected to each other and one such ply to each of the cover sections, means permanently connecting said cover sections and holding the handle plies inengagement, said -cover sections having tuck-in flaps removably holding the same in position and permitting the opening and closing of one or both of said sections.
