Q -UNI.TED;.STATES THOMAS G. PENN, or oHIoAeo, rnr m'ors.
CALENDAR.
I Application filed September Be it known that I, THOMAS G. PENN,
- citizen of the United States, residing at Chioago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Ini provements in Calendars, ofwhich the following is 'asp ecification. 1 This invention relates to calendars and more particularly to a calendar-designed for mounting upon lead pencils, an obj eet of the invention being to provide a practical, novel construction of calendar device which may be easily operated so as to enable the user to readily determine the date of the inonth, week and year. r 1
Another object of this invention is to pro.- vide a calendar structure as specified which embodies a plurality of independently adjustable members to permit adjustment for showing dates anddays.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed" description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved calendar structure showing it applied.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the calendar structure showing a different part from that illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the number carrying member of the calendar structure.
Fig. 4c is a cross section on the line 4'- of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the calendar structure.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the calendar taken at a different point from the section shown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of one of the plates embodied in the calendar structure.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the month carrying plate of the calendar structure.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved calendar structure is adapted for mounting upon a pencil 1 or analogous structure and it comprises a sheet 2 of paper which has the-numbers 1 to O printed thereon as shown at 3. A relatively thin metal sleeve l is mounted over thenumber carrying paper 2 and is provided with openings 5 to permit the exhibiting of the numbers. The plate 4; serves as a protector for the paper to prevent mutilation thereof in the adjustment of the other parts of the 1, 1923. Serial N'o. 660,560.
calendar structure, to be hereinafter more specifically described. Y
A sleeve 6 is "rotatably mounted/about the sleeve 4 and in spaced relation thereto so asto permit various slides 7, 8 and 9m be positioned between the sleeves 4 and .6.
Theslide 7 has the days of thefweek printed thereon asshownat 10 while the slide 8' has. the months of the year printed thereon as shown at 11. Each oftheslides 7 and 8 hasan car 12 formed thereon which extends througha slot'13 in the sleeve 6and through .2
afslot 14 in "an outer sleeve '15 .Thesleeves 6. and 15 are provided with transversely extending slots 17 and 18 through whichIthe,
names, of, the days of theweekand of the months of the year-are visible, respectively as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. By sliding the plates 7 and 8-, through the mediumof the ears 12 the calendar may be adjusted to properly; show'the day of. the week and the'month of the year. I
The slide 9 has the numbers, 1 and 2 printed thereon as shown at 19 in Fig. 1
of the drawings and it is slidable behind an opening 20in the sleeve 15. The sleeves 6 and 15 are provided with aligning openings 22 which are adapted to align with anyone of the openings 5 to permit the exhibition of anyone of the numbers 3 .on the paper 2 for indicating the day of the month. During the first nine days of the month, both the numbers 1 and 2 on the slide 9 are hidden by the outer sleeve 15, however, when the tenth of the month is reached the numher 1 on the slide 9 is moved into exhibiting position through the opening 20 and is maintained in this position until the twentieth of the month is reached when the number 2 is moved into exhibiting position.
hibiting position relative to the opening 21.
From this it will be apparent that after the tenthof the month has been reached in oper-' ating the device, the proper numerals for indicating the days may be brought into registering position before the openings The sleeves 15 and 6 are rotatable and 21. The plates 7, 8 and 9 rotate with the sleeves 6 and 15 owing to the connection of the sleeves and plates through the medium of the cars 12. The plate 9 has a transversely extending ear 27 formed thereon to facilitate its adjustment.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other man ners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in'any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A calendar attachment for pencils comprising, a pencil carried number bearing member, a protecting sleeve mounted over said member, an outer sleeve rotatable relative to said protecting sleeve and provided with an opening to permit exhibition of the numbers on said member therethrough, said outer sleeve having an additional opening in alignment with the first'opening, a plate mounted for sliding movement relative to the outer sleeve having numbers thereon to be exhibited thru the additional opening at predetermined times, day and month indicating plates slidably supported inwardly of said outer sleeve and said outer sleeve having openings to ermit the exhibiting of the names of the ays and months therethrough.
2. A calendar attachment for pencils comprising, a pencil carried number bearing member, a protecting sleeve mounted over said member, an outer sleeve rotatable relative to said protecting sleeve and provided with an opening to permit exhibition of the numbers on said member therethrough, an additional opening in alignment with the first opening, a plate mounted for sliding movement relative to the outer sleeve having numbers thereon to be exhibited thru the additional opening at predetern'iined times, day and month indicating plates slidably supported inwardly of said outer sleeve, said outer sleeve provided with openings to permit the exhibiting of the names of the days and months therethrough, said outer sleeve provided with longitudinally extending slots, ears formed on said last men tioned slidable plates and protruding through said slots for connecting the plates for rotary movement with the outer sleeve and to permit adjustment of the plates longitudinally relative to the outer sleeve.
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature.
