Be it known that l, Emma HrA'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Cloth-Surfacing Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cloth surfacing devices.
rlhe primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved device adapt-- ed to be manually used in order to more effectively bring out the nap on cl th and garments.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved cloth surfacing device, of a simple and compact nature, which may be used to effectively raise and l'e-adjust the nap on shiny surfaces of garments or cloth.
A. further object of this invention is the provision of a cloth surfacing device, preferably in the form of a brush, with a novelly constructed brush head, and improved means for mounting the same so that it may most effectively perform its function in picking up the nap of garments.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown only a preferred embodiment of this invention.

In the drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter may generally designate the improved device, which may consist of a brush head structure vBr: frame C; and handle piece D,

The brush head B is of novel construction, preferably including a shaft 10, formed of a pair of twisted wires 11 and 12, which are evenly twisted to clamp wire napping strands 13 therebetween, preferably intermediate the ends of the wires 13, in order to provide a substantially cylindrical shaped brush head; the shaft of which is of relatively small diameter, with relatively long radially extending napping wires, flexible in nature, although sufficiently rigid to not flex too easily, in order that the nap of a garment may be picked up, so to speak. The wire strands 13 are preferably brass Wire strands, and the outer surfaces thereof terminate at the periphery of the brush head. lt is to be noted from Figure 4 of the drawing, that the terminal portions 15 of the shaft 10 are free of the wire strands, and provide spindles or bearing extensions, so to speak, which may be utilized to support the brush head in the frame C. The twisted wires 11 and 12 are of such nature that they will not bend transversely, so that the alignment of the shaft 10 is always preserved. At each of the extensions 15, it is to be noted that the shaft wires are rather sharp, in order to assist in Xedly supporting the hubs 17. The hubs 17 each consists of the hollow cylindrical body portion 18, providing a pocket 19 which receives an end 15 of the shaft, and it also consists of an outwardly extending flange 20, which is adapted to cooperate in receiving a movable washer 21 thereagainst, whereby to maintain the wire bristles of the brush head B in position, against lateral bending. A.
The frame C of the improved brush A is preferably of one piece of mate-rial, and at the ends thereof is bent to provide brush head supporting arms 23 and 24E, which at their rear ends are bent in right angled relation, to provide the inturned alioning portions 25 and 26 respectively. The frame C furthermore includes the substantially parallel portions 27 and 28, extending preferably in right angled relation integral with the portions 25 and 26, and which portions 27 and 28 are connected by a bight 30, and preferably between the bight 30 and the portions 25 and 26, the portions 27 and 28 are outwardly bowed, as at 31, to receive the handle piece D therebetween, as will be subsequently mentioned. The frame C is ythus formed of ,a single piece of metal ystrip material, andA the portions 27 and 28 may alone be used as the handle for the brush A, or they may be used as a means for attaching a hand graspingpiece D therebetween.
As is sho-wn in the drawing the brush head supporting arms 23 and 2st of the frame C at their outer endsl are provided with openings 33 therethrough, which detachably receive the body portions 18 of the hubs 17 therein, the arms 23 and 2-1 of the frame being` of necessity flexed outwardly so that the same as sprung frictionally clamp the brush head B therebetween, with the inside surfaces of the arms 2?) and 24.-,resting against the flanges 20 of the hubs 17, in a friction retarding relation. This spring action of the arms-28 and 211 tends all the more to force the hubs 17 into a fixed' relation with the pointed ends 15 of the shaft 10 so: that the hubs 17 are fixed with the sha-ft, and said hubs rotate in the openings ofthe arms 23 and 24.
Means for adjusting the clamping spring action which the frame C willl have on the brush headv B is provided, and consistsl of a bolt member 35, which extends transversely through aligning openings in the 'trame arms 27 andl 28, adjacent the inwardly extending portions. 25 and 26; the head 3G of this bolt 35 engaging the arm 27, and the screw threaded shank of said bolt 35 extending through the openingl of the arm 28, to receive a thumb nut 37, by means of which the frameA arms 27y and' 28 may be adjusted with respect to each other, to increase the resilient clamping action ofy the arms 23 and 24' on the brush head B, and as cany readily be understood. In lieu of this slot 4,3 merely a transverse opening may be provided, althoughA the slot t3 is the most convenient means of manufacturing the handle piece D; in order to permit facile assemblage thereof onv the frame C.
The use of the improved napping brush A will be apparent to anyone skilled in the art` to which this invention relates. It is merely necessary to grasp ,the handle of: the
improved brush, and by reciprocating the same over a piece of goods, with the ends of the brush bristles in engagement with the nap ofthe` garment,` sufficient roll action is given the brush head B to permit the easy operation of the device, and yet suliicient retarding or brake action is placed on the brush head B by the spring action of the frame C thereon, in order to insure that the ends of the brush head wire bristles 13% will pick up the nap of the garment, and produce substantially the original effect. rJ'She washer members 21- may also appropriately be termed guards, for the reason that the peripheral edges thereof are formed on a diameter which is just slightly less than the diameter of the brush head B, so that the ends of the bristles 13 extend slightly outwardly of the periphery of the guard washers 21, just a sufficient distance to insure that they will have the required penetrating effect in the nap of the garment, without (flan'iaging the same. It is to be noted, as is illustrated in Figures 1 and il, that the circumferences ofthe brush head B, at the endsl thereof, is slightly reduced, as shown at 415 in Figure 4 of the drawing; thecircumfrrence of the brush headl B being formed ou 'i slightly reducing diameter, as it approaches the guard washers 21. Incident to the piovision of the relatively small diametered shaft 10, and the long bristles 13', the brush headf' B is of particular value in= connection with the purpose which it is to serve, since the bristles of the brush will have the required flexibility inorder to raise the nap of, the garment.
In Figure 6 of the dra-wing is illustrated a modified detail of the invention, which is one-piece, and' adaptedto replace thehubs 17 a-ndj the flanges 21E of' the structure above described. This detail 50 consists of the hollow cylindrical hub portion 51, provided with ay pocket 52 to-receivethe ends 15 ofthe shaft 10 therein, and provides the relatively large diametered.- laterally extending guard flange 53 of the same diameter as the washers 21 above mentioned, so that the outerperiphery 54 thereofl is disposed in cooperating relation with respect to the periphery of the brush head B, in order to-permit the proper penetration of the garment as the brush rolls, and to permit the bristles 18 to flex properly, vwithout liabilityof bending thereofv when too great a pressure is brought to bear on: the brush. Incident to the provision of the long bristles 13 unless the guard flanges provided by the washer 21 or flanges 53 were arovided, these bristles would be apt to be ldistorted when any undue pressure is brought to bear in operating the brush.
Themeans for adjusting the tensioning of the'frame C to produce the proper rctardin action on the brush head B is apparent from the foregoing description, YVitli this teul() of twisted wires ll and 12, it will flex` somewhat longitudinally of the shaft, without loosening the bristles, and in this way any excessive force of the tensioning adjustment provided by the frame C will be taken care of, without destruction to any parts of the brush.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
l. In a cloth surfacing device the combination of a brush head including a shaft, a frame including yieldable brush head supporting arms provided with openings at their outer ends, a hub .member for each end of the brush shaft providing a socket open at one end and closed by an end wall at the opposite end, and against which closed end wall the end of the shaft of the brush head abuts to lilnit the inward movement of the hub members on said shaft, said hub members being adapted to bear in the openings of said arms of the frame and including means to hold them in place against displacement.
2. In a cloth surfacing device the com bination of a brush head including a small diametered shaft formed of twisted wires with bristles clamped therebetween, a frame rotatably supporting said shaft, and means for retarding movement of the shaft therein.
3. In a cloth surfacing device the combination of a brush head including a shaft formed of twisted wires and bristles clamped between said wires of the shaft, said shaft at its ends providing portions free of bristles, a frame providing yieldable support-ing arms, and means mounting the ends of said shaft in said yieldable supporting arms so that said yieldable 'supporting arms act with a braking action on said brush head tending to retard movement thereof with respect to the frame.
Ll. In a cloth surfacing device of the class described the combination of a brush head including a shaft and bristles suitable for picking up the nap of worn garments, and a frame including yieldable arms supporting said shaft so as to place a braking action on the brush head normally retarding the revolution of the same with respect to the frame.
5. In a cloth surfacing device of the class described the combination of a brush head including a lshaft formed of twisted wires and bristles supported bythe twisted wires of a nature suitable for picking up the nap on worn garments, said shaft at its ends being free of bristles, substantially cylindrical shaped hub members carried at the ends of said shaft, and a frame including yieldable arms receiving the hubs therein whereby to assert a braking action on the brush head tending to normally retard revolution of the same with respect to the frame.
6. As an article of nmnufacture a brush head suitable for cloth surfacing including a small dian'ietered shaft, relatively long wire bristles supported by theshaft and being of lengths several times greater than the diameter of said shaft, a frame and means mounting the shaft in the frame to place a braking action on the brush head.
7. In a cloth surfacing device the combination of a brush head including a shaft carrying stiff bristles of a nature adapted to pick up the nap of cloth, a frame including a pair of yieldable and resilient supporting arms provided with openings at their free ends, hub members including cylindrical bodies adapted to bear in the openings at the ends of the arms of said frame, said cylindrical bodies of the hub members providing pockets open at one end and closed at the opposite end for receiving the ends of the shaft of the brush head therein, said hub members furthermore including outwardly extending flanges at the open ends of said pocket adapted to engage at the inside surfaces of the arms of said frame, and means for flexing said arms so that they exert an inward pressing action on the hub members and against the ends of the brush head shaft to normally tend to retard the rotational movement of the brush head upon said frame.
8. In a brush of the class described 'the combination of a brush head including a relatively small diametered .shaft of twisted wire and radially extending flexible wire bristles, hub members carried at the ends of said shaft, guard flanges carried by said shaft to prevent unnecessary bending of the bristles of the brush, and a frame receiving said hubs in bearing relation therein.
9. In a brush of the class described the combination o-f a brush head including a relatively small diametered shaft of twisted wires and radially extending flexible wire bristles, hub members carried at the ends of said shaft, guard tianges carried by said shaft to prevent unnecessary bending of the bristles of the brush, a spring frame receiving said hubs in bearing relation therein, and means for adjusting the spring action of the frame on the brush head to retard ro tation thereof with respect to the frame.
l0. In a cloth surfacing device the combination of a brush head, a frame including yieldable arms, and means for adjusting the yieldable action of the arms to assert a braking action on said brush head.

14. ln a cloth surfacing device of the class described a brush head, and a one piece metal frame bent intermediate its ends to provide handle supporting arms in spaced relation which at their outer ends are provided with laterally extending portions, said laterally extending portions at their outer ends being` provided with forwardly extending brush head supporting; arms, means extending;` transversely between said handle supporting arms for adjusting the clamping action of the brush head supportingarms with respect to the brush head, and a handle member peripherally grooved to receive the handle supporting arms of the frame therein and at its forward end being' provided with a transverse opening to receive said adjustingr means.
