0. PETERSON TOOTHBRUSH Filed July 28, 1927 [riwntor By Attornq tit) Patented June 12, 1928.
UNITED STATES CLIFFORD PETERSON, OF NEW YORK, N, Y.
TOOTHBRUSH.
Application filed July 28,
My invention relates to toothbrushes and has for its object to form a pocket in the brush end thereof whereby to carry a liquid absorbent material, such as for instance, a sponge, which is adapted to come into contact with the bristles of the brush durlng its use whereby to force the liquid therefrom.
Another object of the inventlon is to provide means whereby the absorbent material may be removed and replaced thereln.
A still further object is to provlde a cover plate arranged on the back ofthe brush for enclosing the absorbent material within the pocket and to retain the same in operative position with respect to the bristles of the brush.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination, and
arrangement of parts forming the invention,
at: more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the cover plate in closed position,
Figure 2 is a similar view of the brush end of the device showing the cover plate in open position,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of Figure l, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the brush engaging flange formed on the cover plate,
Referring now to the drawing I have shown my invention comprising a brush inchiding a handle 5 and a head 6 within which is suitably secured a set of bristles, 7, constituting the brushing element and an opening 8 is arranged to extend vertically through the brush head within which may be inserted a quantity of fluid absorbing material such as for instance, a sponge 9, the sponge being of sufficient size to extend downwardly from the head between the bristles for a distance reaching almost to the end thereof.
A cover plate 10 is pivotally-mounted on a pin 11 secured to the head of the brush at 1927. Serial No. 209,002.
one end of the opening the other end of said cover plate having a recess 12 formed therein adapted to releasably engage the stud 13 formed at the opposite end of said opening. A flange 14 is arranged at one side of the cover plate engageable with the edge of the brush head preventing the same from being moved entirely thereacross. By moving the cover plate over the opening in the brush head so that the pin 13 will on gage the recess 12 the plate will thus be retained upon the head in longitudinal alinement therewith.
The sponge 9 may be saturated with any suitable fluid, such as for instance, at liquid dentri'frice, and it is obvious as soon as the brush is placed in use, the pressure of the bristles against the sponge will operate to force the liquid therefrom.
It is to be understood however, that various types of brushes may be constructed embodying my invention as the same is not limited entirely to use in construction to tooth brushes.
It is obvious that the invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the invention to which I am entitled.
I claim:
A brush comprising a head having a set of bristles carried thereby, said head having an opening extending substantially throughout its length and adapted to retain a quantity of absorbent material therein, said material extending therethrough for engagement with the bristles of the brush, and a cover plate pivotally mounted at one end to the brush head and movable into and out of closing position with respect to said opening and locking means for said cover plate comprising a recess formed in the free end of said plate, a pin formed on the brush head engageable therewith, and a flange arranged at one edge of the plate engageable with the edge of said head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CLIFFORD PETERSON.
