This invention relates to tooth cleaners, an object of the invention being'toprovide a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for supporting a thread of any suitable material such 5 as cotton, silk, dental floss or any other material, and which will hold the thread. as loosely or as taut as desired, and can be mosteffectually manipulated to thoroughly clean between the teeth and alsoclean the gums adjacent the teeth to remove any food or other particles which cannot be dislodged with the ordinary brush.
' A further object is to provide a device of this character having an improved arrangement of grooved, thread-receiving posts on which the thread may be wound a number of turns and will eiiectually position without tying or any other fastening means.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novelfeatures of construction and rangements of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. i
. In the accompanying drawings--- Fi ure 1 is a view imelevation illustrating one orm of my improved'device;
v Figure 2 is a view, partly in partly in section, illustrating my improved device as an attachment fllr a toothbrush handle Figure 8 is an enlarged view in elevation.
of one of the thread-receiving posts shown in Figure 1. 4
Referring moreparticularly to Figure 1, my improved device is composed of a single length of wire A". The extremities of the wire are bent at right angles "to the main por- 40 tion of the wire so as to provide a pair of posts 2 and 3, spaced apart. The intermediate portion of the wire is bent upon itself, forming a handle 4:. of any'desired length and shape. H
One of these posts 2 is illustrated on an enlarged scale in Figure 3, from which it will be notedthat the outercnd of the post has an annular /-shaped groove 5 therein for the reception of a cord 6, which may be' of silk,
dental floss, cotton or any other desired material.
v I would call particular attention to the sha e of the groove 5, as this shape of groove enables me to wind a cord a certain numbeg cor maintain itself in combinations and arelevation and will wedge in the groove-ant, liich" is seli sustaining without tying the same or secur .ing the cord many other manner.
' In Figure 21 illustrate 'a modification in which my improved device, indicated gen erally by the reference characteeB, constitutes an attachment for a toothbrush handle,
indicated by the reference. character C. The
device B in this form of my invention is stamped from. sheet metal and comprises spaced posts 7 and 8 having grooves 9 therein, similarin shape to the grooves 5 for the reception of the cord 6.
On one end of the device B-a tongue l O is provided and perforated to receive a pivot,
secured-in the toothbrush handle 0,
pin 11 and said handle is slotted or bifurcated at one end, as 1ndicatedat'12, so as to allow the device B to be swung on the pivot 11 and en -75 closed or housedin the handle.
The tongue 10 is of suificient lengthto pro jcct from the end of the tooth brush handle .when the device B is housed in the handle andhence this. will facilitate the turning o the devieeto operative position; The operation of the device is as follows: For each use, a new tioned on the posts and, this may be as loose or as taut as desired.- force the cord between the teeth and move the device back and forth and in all directions and, in fact, can insert his finger or thumb under thecord and give tothe cord any de- The operator'can then.
length of cord is posh sired manipulation to most effectually clean the teeth.
=Various changes and alterations might. be
made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention and hence i do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself atlibcrty to inakejsuch fairly fall within appended claim.
Iclaim: A tooth cleaner, comprising a single'ins tegral member, spaced grooved cord-receivchanges and alterations as the spirit and scope of the ing posts on the member, a toothbrush hav ing a groove therein to receive the device, a.
perforated tongue on the device, and a ivot pin secured in the toothbrush handle'an projected through the tongue.
