PLUNGER SHAVING BRUSH.
Application led August 23, V 1927. Serial No. 214,842.
The object of the invention is to provide improvements in shaving brushes, andl particularly in that type which contains liquid soap or the like for repeated shavmg without the necessity of carrying soap separately tageous details', including a telescopingjacket Cil or sleeve which is adapted to surround and protect the brush when the latter 1s not 1n use; an. eiiicient plunger mechanism oper-- `ative to effect the filling of the reservoir and when desired to eject a suitable quantity of liquid soap into the bristles of thefbrush; a simple yet positively acting valve structure whereby soap is normally prevented by a portion of the plunger from flowing from the -reservoir into said bristles; and other details of constructionand operation such as are hereinafter brought out in the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of the invention with'a small portion thereof in section and with the bristles of the brush covered; Fig.` 2 is a similar view showing the bristles exposed and the plunger handle partially withdrawn; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the device; and Fig. 4 is an upper end or top plan view of the same. Referring to the drawings, a cylinder 1 is externally provided at one end with screw threads 2, and at its opposite end with similar threads 3, adjacent to a reduced end portion 4, which in turn is externally threaded at 5. Surrounding said cylinder and longitudinally slidable thereon is a sleeve 6, one inner end portion of which is provided with threads 7 adapted to engagel either the set of threads 2 or 3 for purposes hereinafter described.
A brush is employed which comprises bristles 8, secured within a circular block 9, having an axial bore 10, and terminating opposite to said bristles in a hollow cylindrical flange 11, which is internally threaded so as to normally engage the threads 5 of the reduced end portion of the cylinder 1. Within the vsaid iange there is secured an apertured disc 12, in any suitable manner as for instance in engagement with the threaded surface of the said iiange, while a second disc 13, threaded upon its periphery, is normally secured within and in threadedengagement with internal threads 14 in the otherwise open end portion of the cylinder 1. This last-named disc is provided wlth 'a central aperture 15, communicatin with the bore of an integral tube 16, whic normally extends into the bore 10 of the brush block 9.
The end of the cylinder 1 opposite to said brush is also provided internally with threads 17, which normally receive the re` duced threaded portion'18 of a plug, having an enlarged flange or knob 19 provided with a notched or knurled outer surface to assist in its manual engagement, said plug being provided with an axial bore 20 into which,l
is secured, in any suitable manner, the end .portion of a rod 21, which extends slidably thru the bore 22 of a disc closure 23 for the adjacent end of said cylinder l.
Proceeding towards its inner end, the rod 21 is iirst provided with an externally threaded portion 23 adapted to engage they threaded bore 24 of a disc 25, against which latter abuts a centrally apertured leather lor similar washer 26. Next, said rod is rovided with a plane flange 27, which a uts against the inner surface of said washer, when the threaded portion 23 of said rod is in engagement with the disc 25. Beyond said last-named flange, said rod is provided with a shoulder 28, against which is positioned a washer 29, surrounding a reduced terminal portion 30, which normally is positioned within theaperture 15 of the closure disc 13 and extends into the bore of the .dis-
charge tube 16.
In the operation of the device when not in use, the several parts are in the respective positions shown in Fig. 1, with the sleeve 6 surrounding and protecting the bristles 8, and the terminal portion 30 of the plunger rod 21 entering the discharge tube 16, so as to prevent the accidental emission of liquid soap or the like into the bristles from within the reservoir defined by the first-named cyl' inder 1, and the end discs 13 and 23.
If the reservoir is empty, the sleeve 6 is released from engagement with the threads 3 and is moved longitudinally into the withdrawn position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and
into engagement with the threads 2. The brush 8-9 is then withdrawn from engagement with the reduced end 4 of the reservoir cylinder, thereby exposing the tube 16. The knob 19 is then rotated to loosen its threaded portion 1 8 from engagement with the threads 1T of the reservoir cylinder, and then if the threaded portion 23 of the rod 21 is not in engagement with the aperture 24 of the disc 25, continued rotation of said knob and the drawing outwardly of the said rod will effect such an engagement.
Immersing the tube 16 in li uid soap or the like and withdrawing said rod and plunger 25--26--27 (after having previously forced al1 possible air .from within thc reservoir) o crates to draw liquid vinto the reservoir cylinder 1 until the plunger reaches its innermost or highest posltion as shown in Fig. 1. If the brush is not to be used at once, the knob 19 is rotated in the reverse direction until the rod is disengaged from the plunger, after which the former is forced into its innermost position until the reduced terminal portion 30 enters and closes the discharge tube 16. The brush is then replaced in its normally operative position as shown in the drawings.

to be used for moistening, soa ing and lathering the beard, the knob an attached rod are withdrawn, and rotated into engagement With the said plunger, after which the knob-rod-plunger unit is forced into the reservoir until the desired quantity of liquid is ejected into the bristles. The knob and rod are then rotated so/as to disengage them from the plunger, leaving the latter in whatever position it may be, and the former being returned to their innermost positions, closing the discharge tube and permitting the soaped brush to be used in the usual manner.
This operation can obviously be repeated several times with but a single filling of the reservoir, after which the latter must be refilled as hereinbefore described. In each case, after the user has finished with the brush, the sleeve is returned to its original position in which it protects the bristles as previously referred to. Also, it should be noted that the construction of the improved brush makes it possible to cleanse the same, whenever desired, with the least possible difliculty, and altho the parts are designed to be used for many years Without appreciable Wear or breakage, they can be removed and re laced with the least possible difficulty.

A shaving brush, comprising a. reservoir cylinder, an apertured brush block detacha ly carried by one end of said cylinder, an apertured closure for said cylinder independent of said block and provided with an integral discharge tube extending into the aperture of said block, a plunger within said cylinder, and a rod adapted to be connected to and disconnected from said plungend portion, an apertured brush-supporting.
block detachably connected to the external threads of said cylinder and forming a closure f or the opposite end thereof, and an auxiliary closure for said opposite end removably secured to the internal threads thereof and provided with an aperture and an aligned nozzle normally extending through the aperture in said block, the reduced end of said rod when in contracted position extending slidably into said nozzle to break and force dried soap therethrough, said rod being provided with a threaded head which when in contracted position engages the threads of said first end of said cylinder.
3. A shaving brush,.comprising a hollow cylinder both internally and externally threaded at its opposite end, a plunger within said cylinder, a closure adjustably engaging the internal threads of one end of said cylinder, a rod extendin slidably through said closure and adapted to be detachably connected to said plunger and provided with a reduced cylindrical end ortion, an apertured brush-supporting bloc detachably connected to the external threads of and forming a removable closure for the opposite end of said cylinder, an auxiliary closure for said opposite end removably and adjustably secured to the internal threads thereof and provided with Aan aperture and an aligned tubularnozzle normally extending through the aperture in said block, the reduced end of sald rod when in contracted position extending slidably into said nozzle to break and force dried soap therethrough,'said rod being provided with a threaded head which when in contracted position engages the internal threads of said first end of said cylinder, and a sleeve slidably engaging the outer surface of said block as a bearin and having its opposite end provided wit internal threads which are adapted to cooperate at will with the external threads upon the opposite ends of said cylinder.
