Automobiles, and particularly automobiles ol" the limousine or sedan types, are usually equipped with patch pockets locatedin the interior ot the body and more usually provided on the inner faces of the doors. The pockets are usually made of the same material as the upholstering o't the car and pre lerabl y are ol' the patch type having the side margins and lower margin sewed to the car lining, leaving the open margin free. and adapted 'to be held closely against the back wait ot the pocket or against the ear lining by means ot an inserted band or strap of woven elastic, the ends of which are sewed or otherwise secured to a back of the pocket or to the ear lining. 'lhe elastic straps thus provided have not proven entirely satisfactory, since the ends of said straps are not sutiieiently strong to withstand the strains to which they are. subjected through the constant use of the pockets.

lhis invention relates more particularly lo an improved elastic band'or strap constructed. of a solid strip of elastic rubber having the end portions thereof reenforced to permit the strap to be securely attached t0 the back wall ot' a. pocket and further adapted to be ot' sutlicient strength to withstand the tensile strains to which the ends of said strap are subjected when the mouth of the pocket is stretched into open position to permit the insertion or removal of an article from the pocket.

1t is an object of this invention to provide an improved door pocket band, the ends of which are reenforced to permit the same to be securely fastened in position, and furthermore adapted to withstand the strains to which the ends of said band are subjected when the free margin of a pocket is stretched :into open position.

It is an important object of this ,invention to provide a shirred pocket of an autoi'ilobile. with an improved shirrband constructed of elastic solid rubber, having the ends thereof reenforced by vulcanizing strips of duck thereon.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specifications.

This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter described. i

As shown on the drawings:

'lhe reference numeral l indicates an automobile door the inner face of which is covered with an upholstering or lining 2 to which the side and bottom margins or edges of a patch pocket 3 are sewed or otherwise secured. rlhe pocket 3 is made full to permit the open edge or margin of the pocket to be. shirred at 4. Below the shirred edge 4 ot' the pocket- 3 the said pocket is sewed or stitched with two parallel spaced rows of stitching to afford a strap channel 5 which may be constructed by bending over the upper edge of the pocket or by sewing a pocket 1ining to the inner face of the pocket material.

For the purpose of shirring the upper margin of the pocket 3 and resiliently holding the same against the lining of the automobile door, an improved door pocket band or strap is provided in the channel or passageway pro vided by the hemmed portion 5. The improved door pocket band comprises a solid band or strip of rubber 6 having the necessary degree of elasticity to permit the mouth or shirred open margin of the pocket 3 to be stretched or distended when it is desired to insert an article in the pocket or to remove an article therefrom. Each end of the rubber band 6 is reenforced by means of a strip of duck or other suitable material, vulcanized to both sides and around the end to afford a U-shaped reenforce'nient 7 at each end of the band G. The reenforcement extends from the end of the band a short distance towards the center suiiicient to afford a reenforced attaching end. The reenforced head or end portions of the band 6 are adapted to be scwed or otherwise rigidly secured to the back wall or to the lining and inner face of the door to tension the band and thereby pull the same into a position wherein the shirred mouth or iree margin of the pocket is held in a closed position against the back wall of the pocket or the lining of the door.

Figure 5 shows a modified form of door lpocket band wherein each end of the rubber band G has the end portions of the two faces thereon reenforced by vulcanizing a strip of (luck or other suitable stout fabric 8 to the band thereby affording a reenforced head on each end of the band to permit the head portions of said band to be sewed or secured in position without any danger 'of the ends ot' said band tearing out.

Figure (3 illustrates another modification ot' a door pocket band wherein each end of the si rip of rubber G has one face thereof reenforced by vulcanlzing a strip of duck or other material 9 thereto with one end of said rcenforcing material projecting a short distance beyond the end of said band.

Figure 7 illustrates another modification of a door pocket band wherein each. end of the rubber band or strip G has the end of one face thereof beveled as at l0 to taper the end of the band to permit strips of reenforcing duck 1l to be vulcanized to the opposite faces of the end portion of the band with the outer ends of said reenforcing strip 11 abutting one another and securely fastened together by means of stitcbinfY m other suitarf means to form an attaching head l2.

Figure 8 discloses another modification of a door pocket band 6 constructed of solid rubber with each end of the band beveled or tapered at 13 on both sides and split to afford a pocket for receiving a double layer of reenforcing duck or other material vulcanized therein with one end of said double layer of material projecting out of the tapered end of the band to afford an attaching head 14 for the band.

llt will thus be seen that the improved solid rubber band of the required elasticity may have the end portion thereof reenforced by duck or other stout material in a plurality of diiferent ways 'to forni reenforced heads at the ends of the bands to permit the said end portions of heads to be secured to the back walls of the pocket or to the inner walls of the door by sewing said heads in position or securing the same in position by means of tacks or other suitable means without any danger of said reenforced heads tearing loose or pulling apart when the door pocket band is subjected to tensile strains when the mouth of the pocket is disten ded.

am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and l therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

l. A pocket having a shirred free margin, and a band inserted through said shirred margin, said band comprising a strip of rub* ber having the end portions thereof reen# forced by fabric vulcanized thereto.

2. A pocket having a shirred tubular guide along its free edge, and a constricting band of rubber in said guidehaving reenforced ends, theband being secured at its said reenforced ends only and extending otherwise freely within and through the tubular guide.
