Description

March 11, 1930. G. R. WEISZ 1,750,500
TOOTHBRUSH Filed July 12, 1926 Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE REX WEISZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF TO A. S. SHAIPIRO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 'r'oo'rmanusn Application filed July 12,
My invention relates to improvements in tooth brushes, and an object thereof is to provide a tooth brush that will have a removable and replaceable bristle bearing member.
A further object is to provide a tooth brush of the character described, in which the replaceable bristle bearing member cannot possibly be dislodged while the brush is being used because of the novel features of my invention hereinafter described.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tooth brush of the character described, which will have a life-time handle, is exceptionally simple in operation, entirely practical commercially, and to my mind more sanitary than any other brush of its type the truth of which can be plainly seen in the following specification.
My invention consists of the combinations,
arrangements, and constructions herein described and claimed.
My invention is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings forming part of this ap lication, in which igure 1 is a top view of my invention, the
bristle bearing portion being removed.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross section along the line 1212 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the bristle bearing member.
Figure 5 is a cross section along the line 1313 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 a perspective view of the device, the bristle bearing portion having been removed therefrom, and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the bristle bearing member removed from the handle.
My improved tooth brush includes a handle 1 provided at one end portion with a socket 2 unobstructed in its direction toward the longitudinal edges of the handle. The opposite transversely extending walls 3 of the socket 2 have formed therein grooves 5. These grooves 5 have top walls 6 which taper transversely of the socket. By tapering these walls 6, corresponding end portions of the grooves 5 are restricted and at the unrestricted corresponding end portions of these 1926. Serial No. 121,872.
grooves there is provided lateral extending portions 6 providing stop lugs.
As shown these lugs in the present instance are located adjacent the unrestricted portion of the grooves but it is apparent that their location for the purpose may be at any point along the edge 5. The grooves 5 have their vertical walls 7 merging toward each other from the lug carrying side of the socket.
In Fig. 7 I have illustrated a bristle hearing head 9. The end portions of this head 9 are provided with lateral extending ribs 10, wedge shaped to conform to the shape of the grooves 5. Formed in this head are notches 11 for reasons hereinafter set forth.
In mounting the head 9 in the socket 2 the narrow portions of the ribs 10 are passed into the grooves 5 over the stop lugs 6. Continued movement of the head transversely of the socket in the direction of the restricted portions of the grooves, the head will snap over the lugs in the notches 11, said snapping being permitted by reason of the fact that when the head reaches the point to dispose the lugs in the notches there is a loose fit ex isting between the ribs 10 and the grooves 5. This loose condition exists until the head has ridden over the lugs 6 at which time the ribs 10 are wedged in the grooves 5. It will be apparent that to make the final movement of the head 9 the head will be slightly elevated at an inclination with respect to the socket 2 during passage of the head over the lugs 6. The restricted portion of the grooves 5 prevent displacement of the head 9 in a direction opposite the lugs 6 and to remove the head 9 from confinement in the socket it is only necessary to apply the pressure of the thumb against the longitudinal edge of the head 9 opposite the lugs 6. This pressure, when exerted transversely of the head 9 will move the head 9 in the direction of the lugs and unseat the lugs from engagement in the notches. Unless this pressure is applied to the head 9 this head will not be unseated accidentally from the socket by reason of the engagement of the lugs in the notches 10. The insertion of the head 9 in the socket is limited by the engagement of the ribs with the converging Walls 7 of the grooves.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a tooth brush, a handle provided at one end with a fiat transverse socket, said socket having oppositely disposed wall portions provided with wedge shaped grooves, a brush head, wedge shaped ribs formed on said head and adapted for movement transversely of the socket for engagement in said grooves when said head is seated in said socket, said head having spaced notches formed in one edge portion thereof, and means on the socket adapted for engagement with the notches for releasably latching the head in the socket, said head being adapted to ride over and engaging said means when said ribs are inserted in said grooves.
2. In a tooth brush, a handle having one end provided with a transversely extending socket open at both longitudinal edges, said socket having oppositely disposed wall portions provided with grooves, the top walls of said grooves being tapered downwardly transversely of said member and the vertical walls of said grooves being merged toward each other, a brush head, lateral projecting portions carried by the opposite end portions of the head and having outer side walls tapering inwardly transversely of the head for engagement with the merging walls of the grooves, said portions having top surfaces tapering downwardly transversely of the head for engagement with the upper walls of the grooves, and means for latching said head in said socket with said portions engaging said grooves, said head being adapted to be unseated from said socket by manual pressure applied on each of said head opposite said latching means.
In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signature.
GEORGE REX WVEISZ.
