Description
July 1, 1930. l.. w. WAKEHAM DISPENSING DEVICE Filed June 3, 1929 f INVENTOR. www Sr ATTORNEY Patented `luly 1, 1930 PATENT OFFICE LUTHER W. WAKEHAM, OF OAIKLAN'D, CALIFORNIA DISPENSING DEVICE Application le .Tune 3, 1929. Serial No. 368,159.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application relates to`dispensing devices, and more particularly to a shaving brush for dispensing shaving cream.
An object of the invention is to provide a brush having a hollow handle for receiving a shaving cream in which said handle is provided with means for discharging said cream into the bristles of said brush through an opening formed in one end of said handle,
and wherein said means operates a valve disposed in said opening for controlling the flow of cream from said brush handle.
A further object is to provide a brush having a hollow handle for receiving a shaving cream in which a piston is provided for discharging said cream into the bristles of said brush, through an opening in one end of said handle, and wherein a screw threaded rod secured at one end to a removable cap rotatably mounted on said handle, reciprocates said piston -in said handle, the arrangementv being such that a valve disposed in said opening is connected to the other end of said rod and is opened and closed in succession by the rotation of said rod.
Another object ofI this invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is highly useful and simple ,in construction. onvenience of arrangement, lightness and comparative inexpense of manufacture are further objects which have vbeen borne in mind i'n the production and development of the invention.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the fol- .lowing detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device forming the invention; l
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and p Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4--4pf Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the various figures described above adequately illustrate my invention, and the following detailed description is commensurate with the above mentioned drawings in enabling an artisan to construct and assemble the constituent parts of the same.
he device involves in the general organization a shaving brush designated as an entirety by the reference numeral 5. Said brush comprises a cylindrical handle or casing 6 having a central bore 7 `extending therethrough in which Asaid bore `is formed with two diametrically opposed longitudinal guide grooves 8. One end of the handle 6 is internally threaded, as at 9, for threaded engagement with an. externally threaded head 11, which head is provided with an an# nular flange 12 at the outer end thereof for abutment with the end of said handle. Numeral 13 indicates a plurality of bristles which are set in the outer end of the head 11 and extend outwardly therefrom forming a brush.
Mounted in a central bore 14e-which extends through the head 11 is a tubular sleeve 16 having an annular outward flange 17 at the open inner end thereof, which flange ens gages the surface of the inner end of the head 11 and is secured thereto by means of suitable tacks or small screws. The outer end'of the sleeve 16 is closed as at 18, and extends beyond the end of head 11 into the bristles 13, said closed end being provided with an eccentric opening 19.
Mounted for slidable movement in the bore 7 of the handle 6 is a piston 21 which is provided with a central threaded aperture 22 for threaded engagement with a screw threaded rod 23 wherein said rod extends longitudinally throughout the length of said bore. Diametrically opposed lugs 25 eX- tend radially from the piston 21 and are received in the grooves 8 forslidable movement therein, and function to prevent the said piston from rotating in said bore when the screw 23 is rotated. Means are pro-- vided for rotating said screw in the bore 7, thereby causing the piston 21 to move towards or away from the head 11, depending on the direction of rotation of the screw 23. Said means comprises a cap 24 having a socket 26 for receiving the end of the cylinder handle 6, opposite to the brush end of said handle, and to which cap the screw it is desired to remove the cap 24 from the handle 6 it is merely necessary to turn said cap until the projection 28 is in alignment with the vertical groove 31, at which time a pull exerted on the said cap causes the pin to slide through the groove 31 allowing the removal of said cap from said handle.
It kwill now be seen that when the bore 7 of the handle 6 is filled with a paste, such yas a shaving cream, and the screw 26 is rotated by means of the cap 24 so as to cause the piston 23 to move toward the head 11, the contents of the said handle will be forced through the sleeve 16 and discharged from the aperture 19 into the bristles 13. By dipping the bristles 13 in warm water the brush 5 is ready to be used for lathering the face. y
In order that only a predetermined quantity of shaving cream, sufiicient4 to lather the face, be discharged from the handle 6 when the cap 24 is rotated, means, operable by said cap, are provided in the head 11 for governing the discharge of shaving cream through the opening 19. Said means comprises a valve disc 32 which is fitted into the sleeve 16 and rests upon the base 18 thereof, as is clearly shown in Fi 2. A socket 33 is formed in the center o the disc 32 for removably receiving the free lend of the screw rod 23, and wherein the end of said rod and saidl socket are provided with means for preventingrelative rotation, which means may consist of radially extending pins on the end of said rod, which pins engage in slots which extendradially from said socket. The disc 32 is provided with a quarter circular concentric slot 34 which aligns with the opening 19 in the base 18 of the sleeve 16, when turned so as to -be in registry therewith.
In operation, the brush may be held in one hand andthe cap 24 turned by the other hand, in a clockwise direction, which turning rotates the screw rod 23 and causes the piston 21 to move towards the head 11. Rotation of the screw` rod 23 also rotates the disc valve32, which rotation brings the slot 34 in registry with the opening 19 and allows` the shaving cream compressed by the downward movement of the piston 21 to discharge through said slot and said opening into the bristles 13. Continued rotation of the screw 23 causes the slot 34 to be turned past the opening 19 thereby shutting off the discharge of shaving cream. In this manner suflicient shaving cream will be discharged into the brush 13 by one complete turn of the cap 24 to lather the face. Howe ever, if it is desired to discharge more of the shaving cream into the brush, it is merely necessary to turn the handle 24 another complete turn.
Removal of the plunger 21 from the bore 7 of the handle 6 for refilling said handle with shaving cream is accomplished by turning the cap 24 until the pin 28 is in alignment with the slot 31, whereupon the said cap is pulled outwardly, which movement draws the rod 23 and the piston 21 out of the bore 7.
In this specification, and the annexed drawings, the invitation is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms; and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims following` the description, it is desired to cover the inventibn in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
