No. 181,206. Patented Aug. 15, 1876.
I Inventor; Wifnesses: d fl (/%m% w .z/yM
'Ulvrrnn STATES PATENT Qrrroe.
JOHN V. RICHARDSON, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAINTERS COMBINED DUSTER. SCRAPER, AND KNIFE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181.206, dated August 15, 1876; application filed May 29, 1876.
.-ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view of my improved painters duster, scraper, and putty-knife combined, the scraper or knife being shown open; Fig. 2, a i'iew of handle detached from the head of duster, showing the slit in the end of the handle for receiving the scraper, and the screw at the opposite end by which it is attached to the head.
Like letters in both figures of the drawing indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a painters duster; and as a scraper and putty-knife is required to be used almost constantly in connection with the duster, for cleaning and puttying up the Work preparatory to receiving the paint, the object of my invention, therefore, is to combine the scraper with the duster, so that they can be used alternately with equal facility, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. I
The head A of the duster, as well as the handle B, is made of an oval or flat shape, to prevent its rolling off of a step-ladder or scat fold. The handle is provided with the slit a, to receive the scraper or blade 0, having the usual nail-notch b, which is secured therein at the end of the handle by a pivot-screw, 0. ,A notch, d, is made in the edge of the slit, so
T that the blade can be opened and closed the same as that of an ordinary knife. The handle is made to screw into the head of the duster by means of the screw D, so that when the bristles become worn off, the head can be unscrewed and' the same handle screwed into a new one. I
The combination of the scraper and puttyknife with the duster will be found to be of great advantage where a ladder or scaffold is used, and where the prosecution of the work is attended with more or less risk, because it enables the workman to have the free use of one of his hands at all times, so that he can hold on to something, while with the other hand he can prosecute the'work in safety, and with greater facility, avoiding the inconvenieuce of changing the scraper and duster from one hand to the other.
I am aware that blades and instruments may be connected with knife-handles at discretion without the exercise of invention, and the handles may be attached to brushes by means of screws, glued, or formed in one with the brush-head, and also that the brush-heads may be of any desired shape. I therefore claim none of these devices or qualities separately; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A compound brush, putty-knife, and scraper, consisting of the head A, handle 13, provided with screw D and putty knife and scraper O, constructed substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
