This invention relates to packages of various kinds and classes preferabl of the cardboard or paper board type use as containers for candy, cake, food roducts or merchandise of any kind or c ass, and particularly to the provision of a handle member or bail to provide for the convenient carrying of the package; and the object of the invention is to provide a package of the class specified with a handle member or bail constituting an integral part or a unit part of the package structure; a further object being to provide a handle member of the class specified which is normally in a collapsed or folded state and which may be moved into an extended position whenever desired for the purpose of conveniently carrying the package and to eliminate the necessity of wrapping and tying the package as is the customary practice; a still further object being to provide a handle attachment or member of the class specified, which in addition to its utility as a handle also adds novelty and advertising value to the package in the increased display surface made possible by virtue of the movement of the handle member into its extended anfy other desired manner. At 15, the flap is pre erably scored to permit of the movement of position; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, eflicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I have shown at 11 a package for containing food products of any kind or class. This package is rectangular in form in the construction shown but may be of any desired form and constructed in the usual or any desired manner. As shown, the container 11 is composed of cardboard, the upper end of the container having a number of fold-able closure flaps 12, 13 and 14, the latter being the outermost flap and extending from one side wall 11a of the container.

in carrying my invention into eii'ect, instead of sealing the entire area of the flap 14, it is sealed from the wall 11a to the central portion 15 of saidflap by adhesive or in the free end 14a thereof from its horizontal to a vertical position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Said end when in its vertical position forms a bail or handle member by virtue of an elongated finger receiving aperture 14?) formed therein.

In the packing and shipment of the container 11, the end portion 14a of the flap normally lies upon the top of the package and may be held in this position by a small area of adhesive or by any other suitable means if desired, the releasing of which means will permit of the movement of the end portion 14 into the vertical'positionto facilitate the carrying of the container b the purchaser and avoiding the necessity o utilizing wrapping paper, tie cords and the like.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have shown a modification of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2 wherein the upper outermost flap 16 which is similar to the flap 14 is made longer,

and the central portion of which is folded upon itself to form a handle member 16a having an elongated finger receiving aperture 16?). In this construction, both end portions of the flap 16 are adhered or otherwise secured to the container, and the handle member 16a may normally assume a horizontal position as indicated in dotted lines in said figure.

The same result as disclosed in Fig. 1 may be accomplished in the manner seen in Fig. 41 wherein the flap 17 similar to the flap 14 is extended at its end and folded inwardly upon itself as seen at 17a, and the end thereof is reduced to form a handle member 17 b which passes through an aperture 170 centrally of the flap 17. The handle member 17 is also apertured as seen at 17d to receive the fingers of a hand, and said handle member may be normally folded upon the container as indicated in dotted lines. In this case, both end portions of the flap 17 are secured to the container as in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

I may also accomplish the same result as disclosed in Fig. 3 by providing the separate handle member 18 of two ply thickness having laterally extending flanges 1811 which are passed through an aperture formed centrally of the top flap 19 of the container and are glued or otherwise secured in position. The

- handle member 18 is provided with a finger receiving aperture 186 and this handle member may also normally lie upon the upper face of the container as seen in dotted lines.

Instead of a double wall thickness in the handle member as seen in Fig. 5, I may produce the same result by a handle member 20 of single wall thickness as seen in Fig. 8 of the drawings having a single flange 20a arranged and secured beneath the upper flap 21 of the container and passed through an aperture arranged centrally of said flap. In the construction shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 8, it will be understood that the handle member is of less transverse dimensions than the corresponding dimensions of the container, an example of which arrangement is more clear- 1y illustrated in Figs. G and 7.

In the latter figures, I have shown a modified form of handle member 22 which is preferably fashioned to give character thereto and is provided with a finger receiving aperture 22a, and centrally of its free edge with a projecting finger engaging lip 22?). The handle member 22 passed through an aperture arranged centrally of the uppermost flap 23 of the container, and the inner end of the handle member is slightly enlarged or provided with laterally extending flanges 220 which prevent the accidental displacement of the handle member from the flap 23. In this construction, the end portion 23a of the flap is left unsecured or in other words is not glued or otherwise secured to an adjacent flap or flaps whereas the end portion 23b is secured in position, thus permitting of the free sliding movement of the handle member 22 with reference to the upper end of the container or its movement from the position shown in Fig. 7 to the position shown in Fig. 6. It will be understood that the handle member is normally contained within the flap 23 as seen in Fig. 7 and the finger piece 22?) alone projects to facilitate the engagement of the hand with the handle member to withdraw the same, permitting of its extension into a position vertically with reference to the top gf the container in forming the handle mem- From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that my improved handle member is formed of the material of the container or from a piece of material substantially of the same structure and movably or otherwise secured thereto. But, the same result can be accomplished by employing a, handle member 24 preferably composed of twisted paper or what is known as twisted paper rope, and the length of the handle member willpreferably be such as to firmly and frictionally engage three side walls of the container, and to pass beneath the upper flap 25 and the next adjacent flap on one end of the container and flared between said flaps and secured in position by a suitable adhesive or in any other desired manner. Normally, the handle member 24 will assume the position seen in Fig. 9 encircling the walls of the container but may be forcibly displaced from this position an moved into a vertical position as seen in Fig. 10 of the drawings when used as a handle member in carrying the container.

As heretofore stated, my invention is not limited to any particular type of container construction and may be employed in conjunction with boxes or containers for articles of merchandise of any kind or class, regardless of the shape and construction thereof or the material employed in their construction and may be further used in connection with containers for food products of any kind or class, the distinctive feature of the invention residing in the provision of a handle member which may be moved into collapsed inoperative position, and into extended and operative position, and which may constitute an integral part of the container structure, or as an independent part 'fixedly or otherwise coupled therewith.
