This invention relates to shaving brushes, and it is an object of the invention to provide a brush of this kind of a fountain or reservoir type and which embodies a plunger or piston for effecting the desired deliver of the shaving cream or the like to the brus proper.
It is primarily an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind wherein a normally closed valve is employed to control the desired discharge of the shaving cream or the like together with means operating as a result of the pressure exerted by the follower or piston to automatically open said valve and thus avoiding a second operation for this purpose.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved shaving brush whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in longitudinal section and partl in elevation of a shaving brush constructe in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 denotes an elongated tubular member constitutin a handle for the brush and which has its outer or rear end closed by a cap 2 held in applied position in any preferred manner. This member 1, as particu- .larly illustrated in Figure 2, is oval 1n cross section for a purpose to be hereinafter mentioned.
Arranged within the opposite end portion of the member 1 is a brush B including a back 3 snugly fitting within the member 1 and 50 which carries in a conventional manner the brush fibres 4. This back 3 is provided substantially axiall therethrough with an opening 5 continue by an outwardly disposed vnipple 6. This nipple 6, as illustrated in Figure 1, 1s also continued through the opening 55 5 to provide a lining therefor and also to afford an effective inwardly facing valve seat 7.
The outer portion of the nipple 6 has engaged therewith in a conventional manner a flexible extension 8 directed outwardly within the central portion of the fibres of the brush B,lsaid extension 8 readil yielding when the brush is in use so as to offer no hindrance or obstruction to the required ilexibility of the fibres.
Freely disposed within the member 1 through the cap 2 is an elongated rod 9, the outer or exterior end of which carrying an enlargement or head 10 whereby said rod 9 7' may be readily and conveniently rotated.
The inner or inserted end portion of the rod 9 is inwardly beveled to provide a valve end 11 for coaction with the valve seat 7 and said valve end 11 is normally maintained in engagement with its seat 7- through the instrumentality of an expansible member 12. This member 12 is herein disclosed as a coil spring surrounding the rod 9 and interposed between the applied cap 2 and an annular flange or enlargement 14 carried by the rod 9. The head or enlargement 14 is in close proximity to the applied cap 2 and the rod 9 in advance of or beyond the enlargement or head 14 is threaded, as indicated at 15,and said threaded portion 13 is operatively directed through the central portion of a follower or piston 16 snugly fitting within the member 1. The cross sectional configuration of the member 1 provides effective means for holding the follower or piston 16 against rotation within the member 1.
The inner or .inserted end of the rod 9 at its axial center is provided with a forwardly directed pilot arm 17 to facilitate the valvel end 11 of the rod 9 finding its seat. The wall of the member 1 in close proximity to the applied brush back 3 is provided with a filling opening 18 defined by an outstanding 100 flange 19 and which opening is adapted to be closed by a conventional plug 20.
When it is desired to lill the member 1 with shaving cream or the like, the plug 20 is `removed and the screw end of a conventional collapsible tube is engaged therein and the cream within such tube is forced into the member 1.
It is to be understood, however, that before this is done the rod 9 is rotated in a direction `to fully retract the piston or follower 16.
After the member 1 has been filled with paste the plug 20 is applied and the brush is then ready for use.
In using the brush requisite rotation is given to the rod 9 to cause the piston or fol lower 16 to move in a direction toward the brush B and as a result of the pressure imposed upon the cream or the like within the member 1 upon the valve end 11 the rod 9 will be caused to move rearwardly against the action of the expansible member or spring 12 resulting in the valve end 11 unseating suicient to permit the passage of the cream out through the opening 5, nipple 6 and cxtension 8 into the fibres 4 of the brush. AS the pressure within the member 1 is released the member or spring12 will act to automatically return the valve end 11 intol closing engagement with its seat 7.
It is also to be stated that in order to accommodate the different sizes of necks of collapsible tubes of the different popular makes of shaving-cream, suitable adapters may be employed. The brush B may also' be of a type to allow the same to be removed when desired for placement or the like.
From the foregoing description it` is thought to be obvious that a shaving brush constructed in accordancewith my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying-out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A device of the character described consisting of an elongated tubular member, a brush extending within one end portion of the member, said inserted portion of the brush having an opening to permit delivery therethrough to the fibres of the brush, the inner portion of such opening constituting a valve seat, a rod freely disposed through the opposite end portion of the member, the inserted end of the rod constituting a valve for coaction with the valve seat, an expansi 'er threaded upon aeeaeea ble member lwithin the tubular member and coacting with the rod and a wall of the tubular member for normally maintaining the valve end of the rod in closing engagement with the valve seat, and a follower threaded upon the rod and moving therealong upon rotation of the rod, the pressure created by the follower upon the content of the tubular member upon rotation of the rod in one direction bodily moving the rod and follower against the tension of the expansible member to allow the valve at the inserted end portion of the rod to move away from its seat,said rod and follower bodily moving in the opposite direction under the action of the expansible member as the ressure on the content of the tubular mem er decreases to return the valve of the rod to its seat.

A device of the character described consisting of an elongated tubular member, a brush extending within one end portion of the member, said inserted portion of the brush having an opening to permit delivery therethrough to the fibres of the brush, the inner portion of such opening constituting a valve seat, a rod freely disposed through the opposite end of the member, the inserted end portion of the rod being beveled and constitutng a valve for coaction with the valve seat, an expansible member within the tubular member and coacting with the rod and a wall ofthe tubular member for normally maintaining the valve end of the rod in closing engagement with the valve seat, and a follower threaded upon the rod and moving ing therealong upon rotation of the rod,'the pressure created by the follower upon the content ofthe tubular member upon rotation of the rod in one direction-bodily movingthe rod and follower against the tension of the expansible member to allow the valve at the inserted end portion ofthe rod to move away from its seat, said rod and follower bodily moving in the opposite direction under the action of the expansible member as the pressure on the content of the tubular member decreases to return the valve of the rod to its seat.
3. A device of the character described consisting of an elongated tubular member, a brush extending within one end portion of the member, said inserted portion of the brush having an opening to permit delivery therethrough to the inner portion of such opening constituting a valve seat, a rod freely disposed through the opposite end of the member, the inserted end portion of the rod being beveled and constituting a valve for coaction with the valve seat, an expansible member within the tubular member and coacting with the rodand a wall of the tubular member for normally i maintaining the valve end of the rod in closing engagement with the valve seat,a followthe -rod and moving therealong upon rotation of the rod, the pressure created by the follower upon the content of the tubular member upon rotation of the rod in one direction bodily moving the rod and follower against the tension of the expansble member to allow the valve at the inserted end portion of the rod to move away from its seat, said rod and follower bodily moving in the opposite direction under the action of the ex pansible member as the pressure on the content of the tubular member decreases to re turn the valve of the rod to its seat, anda forwardly directed pilot arm carried by the inserted end of the rod to facilitate the seat- -in of the valve portion of the rod.
