Description

July 24, '1934. 11 QBERG 1,967,560
PARCEL CARRIER Filed NOV. 25, 1933 Inventor Attorney Patented July 24, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I 1 Claim.
arrangemen of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully escribed, illustrated in the accompanying 6 ing and specifically pointed out in the appen claim.
In descr 1g the invention in detail, reference will be to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device in open position.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view showing the hook member located in the slot in the handle member.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through Figure 1.
In this drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the handle part of the device which is of such a shape as to readily lit the hand of the user and this handle part is provided with a slot or groove 2 which opens out through the under side thereof and extends from a point adjacent one end of the handle part to a point slightly beyond the middle of the handle part. A pin 3 passes through the middle part of the handle member and through a portion of the slot or groove and receives the eye 4 formed in the carrying member 5. This carrying member 5 is formed of a length of spring wire bent upon itself to form the eye 4 from which extends the shanks 6, one of these shanks terminating in a long curved hook 7, while the other terminates in an inclined part 8, the extremities of these parts 7 and 8 being rolled, as shown at 9, and they abut each other, as shown. The shanks 6 are flattened to provide the thin portions 10 so that these parts can be readily bent to space the rounded or rolled portions 9 apart to permit a string or the like to pass between them. After the pressure is removed, the parts will spring back to contacting relation.
Thus it will be seen that when the device is not in use, the carrying part 5 can be pushed into the. slot orgroove 2 and then the device can be placed in a pocket or in a purse or the like and it will occupy but little room. When the device is to be put into use, the carrying part 5 is pulled out of the slot and into the position it occupies in Figures 1 and 3, so that a string or the like which passes around a package or parcel can be placed in the hook 7, which will permit the parcel or package to be readily carried by one hand of the user grasping the handle part 1. The string or other part of a parcel or the like can be readily slipped between the ends 9 when the parts are sprung sidewise and the shape of the parts prevents the parcel being accidentally dislodged from the hook. As will be seen, there are no sharp points or projections to damage the hand or clothing when in use or the pocket or purse when collapsed.
This device can be used as a carrier for stringwrapped parcels, shopping bags, cord handles, cans with wire looped handles, pails with wire bails and other articles porvided with strings or parts which can be supported by the member 5.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In combination with a handle having a groove therein opening out through the lower part of the handle, a pivot pin passing through the handle and through the inner end of the groove, a carrying member formed of a single piece of spring wire and bent upon itself to form a pair of shanks with an eye at the junction of the shankssaid eye receiving a portion of the pivot pin, the lower end of one shank being curved to provide a curved hook having its extremity rolled inwardly, the other shank having its lower end bent outwardly and downwardly with the extremity rolled inwardly, the two rolled parts normally contacting each other, the resiliency of the wire permitting the contacting parts to be separated to permit a cord or the like to be passed into the hook or removed therefrom, and each shank having a thin part for increasing the resiliency at said thin part.
