INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented July 24, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOOTHBRUSH Ely Baurice Kantor, Atlanta, Ga. Application June 14, 1933, Serial No. 675,821
1 Claim. ('01. 15 1s5) The invention relates to a toothbrush and more particularly to a foldable toothbrush.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a toothbrush of this character, wherein when the same is not in use it is confined within a guard so that the bristles of the brush will be protected and thus assure sanitation, the brush in its entirety being of novel construction and readily and easily folded or unfolded and when unfolded is in condition for use alike to the ordinary toothbrush.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a toothbrush of this character, wherein the uard is of novel construction so that when the brush vis folded to be received in said guard ventilation is assured and in event the brush is wet it will quickly dry. The guard is also formed with a hanger whereby the brush in its folded condition can be hung upon a suitable support handy for use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a brush of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, neat, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the brush constructed in accordance with the invention unfolded for use.
Figure 2- is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the brush in folded condition.
Figure 4 is a plan view. Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the toothbrush comprises a stock forming a head.5 and a handle portion 6 respectively, the head being fitted with tufted bristles 7 grouped to constitute the brush proper.
Hinged or otherwise swingingly Joined with the handle 6 is a guard which is formed with a hollow head 8 of a size and shape to accommodate the head 5 with the bristles 7 and a channeled extension or arm 9 for accommodating the hendle 6 of the stock. The sides of the extension or arm accommodate the pivot lugs 10 carried by the handle 6 for the hinging of the handle and extension or arm together as is clearly apparent from Figures 1 to 4 of the drawing.
The sides of the extension or arm 9 have the oppositely disposed outstruck protuberances 11, these being disposed on opposite sides of the pivot lugs 10 an equidistance therefrom, while on the handle 6 are latching projections 12 which are frictionally engageable in the hollow sides of the protuberances 11 when the guard is folded onto the brush stock or unfolded away from the same, thus maintaining the latched relationship between the said stock and the guard.
The inner end of the extension or arm 9 has formed therewith a hanger eye 13 which serves to permit the hanging of the brush when folded on a nail or other projection located on a support for convenient access to the brush for use.
The sides of the hollow head 8 are provided with ventilators 14, these being outstruck from said head at its sides to form the. shielded ventilating openings 15 therein so that when the .brush is folded and if the bristles are wet the latter will dry through circulation of air through the ventilators.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a toothbrush having a handle with a bristle carrying end, of a covering guard formed with a hollow vented head and a channeled extension opening into the same, a transverse pivot connecting the end of the bandle within the channeled extension inwardly of the end thereof next to said handle and permitting the said handle to swing completely into the extension and also the bristle carrying end into the head, latching projections on the handle and.
frictionally engageable with the channeled extension when the handle is without or within the same, and an eye extension on the pivoted end of the extension and contacting with the handle when swlmg outwardly of the extension and aligned therewith.
