Description

JSKNAP'P FACIAL PATTER Filed July 21. 1951 sept.l 1s, '1934.
. ...Nvvvv A TTORNEY.
Patented Sept. 18, 1934 UNITED STATES Facial, PATTER `Jamil) Knapp, Newark, lo d v Application July 21, 1931, serialv No. 552,135l "f i j solaires. y(or 12s-s4) y' This invention relates to patters and has as itsobject to provide Va facial patter having means for removably securing 4thereto a pad of novel construction for the reception of astringents,
lotions. and antiseptics for application to the face or other parts of the body especially after a facial has been received at a beauty parlor.
Another object of my invention is to provide the patter with means adjustably arranged in the handle thereof, for regulating the vibratory movement of the patter.
Another object of my invention is to provide an individual pad for use with a facial patter, which is of a sanitary, hygienic and highly practical construction, and is so formed as to be readily and frequently replaceable, whereby individual pads for use by various individuals and for use by the same individual, for thc application of various astringents and lotions, may be provided for.
A further object of my invention is to provide a facial patter of the character set forth consisting of relatively few parts, the parts being easily assembled and readily replaceable, which lends itself admirably to economical manufacture in large `quantities by the use of simple tools and dies.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, `forming part hereof, and in which:
Figure 1 represents a front elevational view of my improved patter,
Figure 2 represents a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 represents a transverse sectional view taken along lines 3--3 of Fig. 1,
Figure 4 represents a vertical transverse sectional view of the hollow handle employed in my improved patter, provided with a ferrule to which a at spring is secured,
Figure 5 represents a side elevational view of the adjusting rod used in my patter, and
Figures 6 and 7 represent, respectively, a front and side elevational view of the pad used in my patter.
As shown in the drawing, my device consists, essentially, of the hollow handle 1 having secured thereto, at its upper end, a ferrule 2. A resilient member, preferably in the form of a flat spring 3, is secured at one end in any desired or convenient manner to the ferrule 2, being preferably secured in the slotted end 4 of the ferrule 2, the other end of the spring being secured in the enlarged slotted head 5 of the shank 6,' whichjhas integrally secured thereto the pad supporting-discl 7,.
Slidably mounted in the hollow handle 1 is 60 an adjusting rod 8, the upper endof which is slotted, at 9, to have sliding engagement with the sides of the flat spring 3. A finger-piece 10 of any convenient shape is secured to the rod 8 in any desired manner, the reduced portion of said finger-piece 10 engaging with a slot 11 in the handle Y1 whereby on manipulation of the finger piece 10, the slotted end 9 of the rod 8 is moved up and down on the spring 3 to regul late the swinging movement of the patter.
While this structure has been found advantageous for the regulation of the vibratory movement of the pad support, it is within the scope of my invention to utilize other structures for the same purpose. For example, instead of providing a hollow handle in which the adjusting rod 8 is slidable, the adjustment could be accomplished by providing any equivalent means defined by the claims.
A pad 12 adapted to receive liquid astringents, lotions, antiseptics and other liquids, is removably secured to the disc '7 by the bezel 13, which preferably has frictional engagement with the periphery of the disc 7, but may be secured thereto by a bayonnet-slot or other arrangement (not shown).
The pad 12 may be made of cloth, sponge, felt, paper or the like by the use of suitable punches and dies, but I prefer and have used a circular pad made from surgical cotton, preferably oval in cross-section and which in the course of manufacture is provided with a circumferentially arranged flange 14 formed by compressing the material of the peripheral edge thereof.
This form of pad is especially advantageous in that it lends itself admirably for ready removal from the pad supporting disc and in use pads of this type are constantly replaced by similar pads from time to time.
On manipulating the handle 1, the opposite pad end of the patter will vibrate, due to the intermediate spring 3, and by moving the finger piece 10 of the rod 8 up. or down in the slot'll of said handle 1, the split end 9 of the rod 8 will be selectively moved into engagement with a greater or lesser portion of the length of the spring 3, thus regulating the vibratory movement of the pad end of the patter to suit the type of skin to be patted.
I have shown and described the preferred emlio bodiment and forms of my invention, but my invention is to be understood as covering all other variations in structure Within the scope of the appended claims.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many` modifications Without.depa1ting from .the general' fscope herein indicated, and denoted in the appended claims.`
Having thus described my invention, rwhat claim as new and desire to secure by Letters` Patent, is:
1. A patter comprising a handle, a pad :sup= port, a spring connecting the supportwith the handle, and a member' slidably conneictedwith said handle and adapted to;'engageiwithrsaid' spring for regulating the vibratory movementl of the pad support.
2. In a patter, a. hollow yharidlehaving alongivtudinal slot, a spring'vs'ecurezd saidfhandlefa bar slidably arranged in said handle and adapted to engage with said spring to ,regulate vthe Vvibra/- tory movementv thereof, and' a finger-piece `on vsaid bar movable infthes'lot of Saidhandle; I,
3. In a patter, a disc, a support for the disc, a circular pad having a body portion of liquid absorbent material, said pad having a circumferential ange of the same material as the body portion, said flange being substantially rigid and compact relative to the body portion, and means to t over said flange to detachably secure the pad to the disc.
`4.Inia patten` a circular supportingvdisc, a circularpadfhaving a bodyjportionf liquid absorbentI material, said padhaving abirumferentiaf'flange of the same material as the body portion, said flange being substantially rigid and compact relative to the body portion, a bezel -ngaging said flange and detachably secured tothe disc v,to hold the pad on the disc.
"""""'5I"'In"a`"patter, a circular supporting disc, a lpadhaVinglalbody portion of liquid absorbent material, said pad having a peripheral flange of "I the""`san1`e"material as the body portion, said flange being .substantiallyvvrigid and compact relative `tofthe body .'porti'on,v a' bezellenga'g'ing said fflan'ge' and detachably securdto the disc to hold the pad on the disc,
