Patented Mar. 26, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1,995,374 DENTIFRICE HOLDING TOOTHBRUSH James D. Young, Sierra. Madre, Calif. Application April 23, 1934, Serial No. 721,887
1 Claim. (01. 1s7) dentifrice holding 5 dentifrice pellet.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a tooth brush including bristles where-.
in a portion of the bristles are arranged to form a pocket for the reception of a pellet of dentifrice.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel dentifrice pellet.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig.1 is a side elevation partly in section, showing my improved tooth brushes;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a central sectional view through one of my pellets;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, showing my novel dispensing container for the pellets;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the end of the container;
Fig. 6-is a section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary top plan view'showing a modification of my tooth brush;
Fig. 8 is a section taken on line 88 of Fig. '7;
Fig. 9 is a section taken on line 9-9 of Fig. 8;
Fig. 10 is a front end view of a further modifled brush; and,
Fig. 11 is a section taken on line 11-11 of F18. 10.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, I have illustrated my invention in a tooth brush which is indicated generally at 10. As shown, this brush includes a head 11 and a handle 12. The head is provided with a'plurality of bristle tufts 13, which are arranged preferably in longitudinal and transverse parallel rows. The tufts may be secured in the head in any desired manner, as by vulcanizing, and the free ends of the bristles may have their brushing surface arranged in any desired configuration.
At a desired location I arrange certain of the adjacent tufts with their ends shorter than the ends of the surrounding tufts, as indicated at 14, in Fig. 2. This arrangement provides a pocket 15 for the reception-of a pellet of dentifrice which is indicated generally at 16. This pellet comprises a central or core portion 17 which may be a powder or which may be plastic in the nature of a cream and a covering 18 which may be made of such material as starch, or any material having the desired inert or other properties and which is soluble in water.
In Fig. 4 I show a container at 19 which is 5 adapted to hold dentifrice pellets. This container has a neck 20 thereon and is provided with an aperture 21 in the neck. From the wall of this aperture a plurality of tongues 22 (see Fig. 5) extend inwardly. These tongues are of a size 10 to engage a pellet 16 and prevent the latter from passing through the aperture 21. An ejector 23 is preferably made of resilient material and includes an operating end 24.
In use the tooth brush 10 is placed with the 15 pocket 15 arranged beneath the aperture 21. The portion 24 is then depressed and one end of the pellets passes through the aperture 21 into the pocket 15. The brush is then moistened and is used in the usual manner.
In Figs. 7, 8 and 9 I show a modification of my invention wherein the brush indicated generally at 25 is provided with a hole 26 through the head thereof. The brush is provided with the usual bristles 27. These bristles are omitted ad- 25 jacent the hole 26 to form a pocket 28. The bristles are resilient and thus when a pellet is passed through the hole 26 it is engaged and retained by the bristles as shown in Figs. 8 and 9.
In Figs. 10 and 11, the brush 30 is provided 0 with bristles 31. These bristles in the center of the brush at one end are omitted thus forming a pocket 32 in which the pellet 16 will be retained in place by the resiliency of the bristles.
From the foregoing description it will be ap- 5 parent that I have invented a novel dentifrice holding tooth brush which is simple in operation and which can be very economically manufactured and which is also very efiicient in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 40
In a tooth brush, a body having a handle thereon, a plurality of tufts of bristles arranged in the body, said tufts being disposed in parallel, longitudinal and transverse rows, the lengths of the bristles in certain tufts in one portion of the brush being of substantially one-half the length of all of the surrounding tufts of bristles to provide a pocket adapted to receive a pellet of dentifrice with the said tufts'of bristles which surround the shorter tufts being adapted to engage the pel- 50 let and. hold it in position.
