HANDLE CONNECTION FOR IMPLEMENTS Filed July 21, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR ATTORNE Patented Sept. 10, 1935 HANDLE CONNECTION FOR IMPLEMENTS Frank L. Ingling, Livingston, N. J. Application July 21, 1934, Serial No. 736,335
4 Claims.
The invention relates to an adjustable handle connection for implements, such as scrubbing brushes, whereby the implement may be adjusted relatively to the handle or staff and held in 5 various adjusted positions.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying invention:
drawings illustrating the Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a brush equipped with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view or the same.
Fig. 3 is a section, taken on the line 3-3 Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section, taken on the line Fig. 2. Fig. necting member broken away.
5 is a plan view of the plate, with the con- In these drawings the numeral l represents a scrubbing brush, to the back of which is attached a plate 2 having an annular se ries of perforations 3 constituting notches or indentations in the upper face of the plate.
A connecting member upon the plate 2 Ais by means of a pin 5, having a square shank engaging the member and rotat ably secured in the plate 2 centrally of the annular series of notches 3.
Said member has a pair of opposed lugs 6 provided with notched or openend trunnion seats 7.
Member 4 may be perforated as at 8, close to the lugs 6, these perforations registering with any as the connecting member is Carried by jaws 9 of the pin 5 Ill, having a hook H for enga hereinafter set forth.
Secured to and projecting two of the notches 3,
pivotally adjusted. is a pivoted clamp ging the handle as beyond the end of the handle I2 are a pair of sector plates l3, having radial teeth l4 (preferably two teeth on each sector). be spaced apart sufficiently to It is preferred that the sector plates 53 fit snugly between the lugs B of member 6, any two of the teeth M being designed to register with the perforations 8 and notches 3. A pin i5 is fixed in the sector plates l3, the ends of said pin projecting laterally trunnions, engageable is also designed to beyond the plates to form with the seats 'I. The pin l5 be engaged by the hook ll of pivoted clamp Hi,
the engaging face of desired.
It will be noted that the universal joint connection between the the hook being cammed, 1f
member 4 forms a brush and the handle, so that the brush may be adjusted in one plane about the pivo t 5, and the handle may be adjusted in a right-angular plane about the pivot l5. It will further be noted that the teeth [4, by engagement with the notches 3, secure both adjustments, the engagement being held by the clamp I0. 5
When it is desired to change the angular position of the brush with relation to the handle, or to reverse the brush, end for end, to equalize wear, the clamp i0 is released, the handle disengaged from the connecting member 4, and said member 10 is rotated until the perforations 8 register with the desired notches 3. The handle is then replaced and the clamp l0 reengaged.
The method of adjusting the angle of the handle is the same except that the connecting member 4 is not readjusted, but the handle is reengaged in a different position, so that a different pair of teeth I4 is brought into registry with the notches 3.
The invention provides a simple, durable article, quickly and easily adjustable to meet the conditions of the work.
I claim:
1. In an adjustable handle connection for implements, a toothed sector rigidly connected to the handle, an annularly notched plate rigidly connected to the implement, each of the notches of the plate being adapted to receive any of the teeth of the sector, a universal joint connection adapted to hold the sector and the plate in right-angular relation to each other, and a clamp adapted to secure the sector to the plate with selected teeth of the sector in registry with selected notches of the plate.
2. In an adjustable handle connection for implements, a toothed sector device rigidly connected to the handle and provided with trunnions, an annularly notched plate rigidly connected to the implement, each of the notches of the plate being adapted to receive any of the teeth of the sector, a connecting member pivotally mounted upon the plate and provided with notched lugs forming seats for the trunnions, and a clamp mounted upon the'oonnecting member and engageable with a part of the sector device to hold selected teeth of the sector in registry with selected notches of the plate and the trunnions in registry with their seats.
3. In an adjustable handle connection for implements, a toothed sector rigidly connected to the handle, a trunnion pin secured in said sector, an annularly notched plate rigidly connected to the implement, each of the notches of the plate being adapted to receive any of the teeth of the sector, a connecting member pivotally mounted upon the plate and provided with seats for the trunnion pin, and a clamp pivotally mounted upon the connecting member and having a hook engageable with the trunnion pin to hold selected teeth of the sector in registry with selected notches of the plate and the trunnion pin in registry with its seats.
4. In an adjustable handle connection for implements, a toothed sector device rigidly connected to the handle and provided with trunnions, a device including a notched plate rigidly connected to the implement and notched lugs disposed at right-angles to the plate and forming seats for the trunnions, each of the notches of the plate being adapted to receive any of the teeth of the sector and a clamp pivotally mounted upon said plate device and having a hook engageable with a part of the sector device to hold selected teeth of the sector in registry with the notches of the plate and the trunnions in registry with their seats.
