This invention relates to ladies hand bags and comprehendscertain improvements in a hand bag of the type set forth in prior United States Letters Patent, No. 1,990,360 granted February 5,

In one of its forms, the invention resides in combination with a hand bag. including a pair of normally downturned aps swingably connected at their upper edges to the upper edge of and lying on opposite sides of said bag, and a separate outer covering detachably connected with the flaps, a saddle strap extending around the bag body outside of the covering and detachably connected at its opposite ends respectively l5 'with said flaps to provide means through which the ngers may be slipped for carrying the bag as well as serving as an ornamentation or decoration for adding to the attractiveness or appearance of the bag.

The invention further contemplates, in a hand bag of the indicated character, a saddle strap which may be optionally associated therewith to provide a carrying loop extending upwardly from the bag body.

The invention also comprehends in a ladys hand bag of the character set forth, a detachable outer covering provided with end walls or gussets having openings in the upper portions of the side walls adapted to underlie the downturned flaps with separable fastening means on the bag body and flaps respectively which are engageable through the openings in the detachable cover member to retain the same in place.

Other objects of the invention reside in the provision of an improved hand bag which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to produce and which is highly efficient for its intended purpose.

With the above enumerated and other objects in view, the invention is more particularly set forth in the specification and drawing wherein there is disclosed several embodiments thereof, while the claims cover others which fall within the scope of the invention.

Referring to the drawing by characters of referyence and particularly to theform of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, of the drawing, 5 designates the body or pouch of a ladys hand bag, the mouth of which maybe closed by any 5 suitable means such as a slide fastener 6 or any equivalent means. Attached to the upper portion of the bag body or pouch 5 is a pair of normally downturned flaps l which lie on opposite sides of the mouth thereof. A separate outer l0 covering member 8 is provided which is adapted for detachable association with the bag body and which is of a size and shape to extend around and enclose the sides and bottom of the bag body with the opposite ends 8 located beneath the 15 flaps.

In order to provide means for connecting the cover member 8 with the bag body, the undersides of the flaps 1 are provided with the stud elements I8 of snap fasteners, while the opposite ends of 20 the cover member are provided with the socket elements II of said snap fasteners. A saddle strap I 2 is also provided which is of relatively narrower width and of relatively greater length than the covering member 8 and the opposite ends 25 I3 of which are adapted to underlie the medial portion of the flaps 1 and located between the ends of the covering member 8 and the ilaps. The ends I3 of the saddle strap are provided with socket members I4 of snap fasteners, while the 30 medial portion of the underside of the flaps are formed with the slitted elements I5 adapted to engage with the sockets I4 to detachably associate the saddle strap with the bag and provide on the opposite sides thereof, finger receiving loops by 35 means of which the bag may be conveniently carried. The saddle strap, as well as the covering member 8, may have the opposite surfaces thereof of a different color, shade or character to permit of variation of the color scheme or general 40 appearance of the bag and the saddle loop may be of an ornamental configuration to add to the attractiveness or appearance of the bag.

The socket elements I4 of the saddle strap I2 are so constructed that the saddle strap may be 45 reversibly associated with the flaps of the bag body and may be optionally disposed either to extend around the bag body, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, or to extend upwardly therefrom as shown in dotted lines to constitute a carrying loop 50 or bail.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the bag body 20. which is provided with the normally downturned flaps 2l, is provided with outwardly projecting stud elements 22. of snap fasteners which underlie the iiaps and which are adapted to engage in socket elements 23 on the underside of the flaps. In this form of the invention, the covering member 24 is provided with end walls or gussets 25 so that the covering member encloses the ends of the bag body as well as the sides and bottom. Inthis instance, the upper portions of the side walls of the cover member, which are adapted to underlie the fiaps 2l when the covering member is applied, are formed with openings 26 through which the stud elements 22 extend to detachably retain the covering member in place. In this form of the invention, the cover member 24 may be reversibly associated with the bag body by inverting the same and the opposite surfaces thereof may be of contrasting colors, shades or characters.

It is obvious that the covering members and saddle strap may be detached from the bag body and washed or replaced by other colorings or straps similar thereto to vary the color scheme and general appearance of the bag according to the desire of the user.

What is claimed is:

1. A ladys hand bag including a pair of down- -turned flaps swingably connect-ed at their upper edges respectively to the opposite sides of the bag body, a separate cover member therefor having the opposite ends disposed beneath the flaps, detachable means of connection therebetween, a saddle st:ap adapted to extend around the cover member and bag body with the opposite ends of said strap disposed between the flaps and the cover member and interengageabe separable fastening elements provided respectively on the undersides of the flaps and on the opposite sides of the opposite ends of said saddle member.`

A ladys hand bag including a body having a surfaces of relatively different characters and in\ terengageable separable fastening elements provided respectively on the undersides of the flaps and on opposite sides of opposite ends of the saddie strap to detachably -connectfV said strap withV the flaps in a position extending 'around the bag body with either of the opposite surfaces of the strap disposed outwardly and to provide finger receiving loops on opposite sides of the bag body.

3. In a ladys hand bag, a body having a pair of downturned flaps connected to the upper edge of and lying on opposite sides of the bag body, an ornamental saddle strap and interengageable separable fastening elements beneath the flaps and at the opposite ends of the saddle strap for detachably associating the same with the hand bag to optionally extend around the body thereof t0 provide means on opposite sides of a bag body between which means and said opposite-sides the fingers may be engaged for carrying the handbag or to extend upwardly therefrom to'vprovide a suspension means for carrying the handbag.

4. In a ladys hand bag, a body having a pair of downturned flaps at the upper edge of and lying on opposite sides of the body, a separatefouter covering therefor adapted Ito enclose the side, bota tom and ends of the bagvbody and' having apertured upper portions adapted to underlie the flaps and separablefastening means on the bagbody and flaps including studs engageable through the apertured portions of the covering member to rdetachably support the covering member in covering relation to the bag body.
