'L' One of theobjectsv of :ny-invention is lto pro- 5 vide a tooth brush or other'appliance having a handle ywhich acts asa receptacle for the-bristle portionlwhenthe same is not 4in use and wherein the vsaid bristle portion 4is automaticallypre-- sented' in the operative position.

' Fig. 5'is a section onv theline 5-5 of Fig. 1. 3o Fig. 6 is a perspective viewof my tooth brush in the operative position.
AIn'thev drawing, I designates the handle of the tooth brush which is also the receptacle for the bristle portion 2, "having the bristles I0 y 35 mounted therein. 'I 'he handle I has a pin 3 secured to its walls and pivotally mounted on the shank oi the pin 3 Aby means of the yoke 4 is the bristle portion 2. However, any hinge joint can be utilized to maintain these parts in ,40 pivotal relation.
Within the recess of said yoke 4, I provide a.'
'I'he bristle portion 2 is'provided with agroove 5| 3 at its outer end and this is adapted to engage a latch 8, formed on. the end of the receptacle I. When the bristle portion 2 is collapsed into the receptacle I, the iatch'l will snap into the groove 3 and retain it againstthe. action of the spring .5.' The latch l is I neferablyv formed integral 15 with the ,receptacle` I and is in the form of a projection thereon.4
As kheretofore .explained the assemblage is madeof a resiliet'material and the walls II of the receptacle I beingv of narrow width are easily compressible. Referring particularly to 4Fig.` 4, this shows-the tooth brush in the col- :lapsed position, and the lingers E compressing the walls Il of the receptacle I.v This action elongates the receptacle I and the latch 8 leaves 15 the groove 3 releasing the bristle portion 2 which 4is then permitted to swing back to the dotted line position shown, impelled by the unhampered 'action of the spring i.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention but it is obvious that numerous changes .can be made without vdeparting from its spirit.l` For example, whileI` have'illustrated my inventionas applied to a tooth brush, many other vcommon articles may be formed so as to utilize its principles; Also, I 'have shownthe latch 3 in the receptacle engaging the groove 3 in the bristle portion but it is obvious lthat their positions might be reversed and it is understood that my -invention covers this departure. This variation is likewise applicable to projections Il and the recesses I3.
