UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOUNTAIN .PEN William G. Nichol, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application July 15, 1937, Serial No. 153,812
4 Claims. (Cl. 1Z0-46) This invention relates to fountain pens and illustrated form of the invention is of the friction more particularly to the conventional types which grip type. are usually lled with the desired Writing fluid by In connection with the section I2 the numeral the use of an outside instrumentality, in contra- I5 indicates the customary nib feeding groove, 5 distinction to the numerous other varieties which and it is to be particularly remarked that in .are more or less periodically replenished by accordance with the invention the inner end of manipulation of interassociated filling means. said section is suitably reduced at I6 to receive The primary object of this invention is to proa rubber closure or nipple I 'I of a length so vide an improved type of fountain pen including. that when cemented or otherwise xed in posil0 a novel feed structure whereby the barrel of the tion it provides a hemispherical hollow cap I8. 10 pen can be substantially filled to its maximum Through the feed I2 there is also drilled or othercapacity. v wise provided an axial passage I2', of small diam- AnOtheI Object iS t0 PrOVde a fountain pen 0f eter, for free passage of the tubular needle porthe indicated character in combination with a tion I9 of a, filler 20, This filler 20 is preferably novel filler means which is adapted to ll the pen of hollow bulbous formation, as shown, with the toa greater Capaty than heretofore possible needle portion I 9 of the hypodermic type and and which, when withdrawn, leaves the pen autohaving a tapering end 2I adapted to centrally matically sealed against leakage, while the disadpierce the cap I8 aforesaid. vantage of sweating is reduced to the minimum. Now, it will be readily understood that upon With the foregoing and other objects in View inserting the llter needle-portion I9 into a sup- 20 which will hereinafter appear, or be specifically ply of the desired Writing fluid and by collapsing referred to, as well as ancillary advantages aristhe hollow bulbous portion 20, and then releasing therefrom; this invention consists essentially ing the applied pressure, that said bulbous porin the novel features ofv construction, combination will be automatically filled to capacity by tion and arrangements of parts and associated suction, and is now ready for filling the pen barrel 25 items hereinafter disclosed and more concisely IIJ, by passing the needle portion I9 through the expressed in the concluding claims. filler section axial passage I2 until it pierces the In the drawing nipple I1, in an obvious manner. It will also be Fig. l is a broken view, mainly in longitudinal observed that when the lling pressure iS resection of a fountain pen embodying this invenleased from the bulbous portion 20, and the latter 30 tion. is withdrawn from out of the passage I 2', that Fig. 2 is a view of the associated filler means. the barrel contained fluid pressure will also aid Fig. 3 is a closure pin for the ller of the prein automatically closing the incision made by the ceding illustration. needle I9 through the nipple Il. hevlgxafftjr uilgllken Sectional View of a, slightly In connection with the filler needle portion I9 there is provided a closure pin 2| having a linger-hold or eye 22 at one end and being preferably of a diameter to frictionally t the bore of said portion I9 to protect the content of the on pointd out" ller 2U when not in use; while a suitable con- Referring more 1n detail to the drawing the miner 23 having a Se1f sea1ing cap 24 may also barrel or ink containing section of the improved be provided for Storage of the uer when not fountain pen is comprehensively designated by required and thus further preserving its con- 50 the numeral I0, the same being internally screwtent and utility threaded at its Open end H, for reception 0f a In order to further increase the utility of the removable feed-Section l2, Carrying the nib 01 improved fountain pen of this invention, the clopen Peint I3; vand I4 Similarly indicates generally sure or cap I4 is preferably provided with a pluthe closure or cap, which in accordance With the rality of longitudinally spaced holes 25, into any 55 45 nated by like reference numerals except as later pair of .which are insertable the pins` 2E rigidly carried by a conventional spring clip 21; said clip being clampingly engageable with variable tension to the cap I4 in the desired position by a ring 28, Figs. l and 6, having an outset 29l adapted to snugly open the clip between the pins 26, as well as of an interior diameter to similarly embrace the cap I4 in an obvious manner. Thus it will be readily apparent that by inserting the pins 26 in the selected holes 25 that the clip 21 can be locked in place at the requisite position for holding the pen in place in pockets of different depths, and with a variable tension controlled by said rings position relativev to the clips active and, in an obvious manner, by move-y ment towards or away from said action cord.
In some cases it may be found preferable that instead of the passage I2 being axially idisposed relative to the vfeed-section I2 it may be longitudinally inclined relative to such axis as shown at I2 in Fig. 7, with equal advantages to those ascribed to the form shown by Figs. f1 -and 5; while it is to be remarked ,corresponding references arel applied to Fig. -7 in `order to obviate unnecessary repetitive matter.
From the-foregoing description `it is thought the use and advantages inhering to this inventionwill vbe clearlyV apparent; but it is deemed advisable to mention that said pen is forty per cent lighter in Weight than yany known pen of corresponding size; that in View of its simplicity it `can be thoroughly cleaned with a minimum of effort, and when the barrel is made of transparent material it is not only possible to see the color of the contained writing fluidy but also at a glance when refilling is necessary. Again by making the clip adjustable radial sweat holes are unnecessary; and withal by virtue of its novel construction as a whole there is provided a pen of maximum ink carrying capacity and that is clean and sanitary at all times while being positively free of any tendency to leak even if laid on a flat surface for lengthy periods of time.
Obviously minor changes may be effected in structure details in adapting this invention to different types and styles of fountain pens Without departing from the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A fountain pen comprising a barrel, a feed through, a resilient material nipple closing in the inner end Yof said feed section and adapted for penetration by a hollow-needleY filler device.
, 2,. A fountain pen comprising a writing uid container barrel, a removable feed section carrying a conventional writing point, said feed section having an axial passage therethrough, and a` resilient material nipple closing. in the linner endV of said feed section, in combination with a i'lllerdevice in the form of a compressible bulb having an .attached tubular needlewadapted for free passage through the filler axial passage and nipple 3. A fountain pen as defined in claim 2 `wherein the inner end of the feed sectionis increased in diameter, and the nipple Aconsists of a rubber closure ofv a length so that `when fixed rto the feed section it defines a holloW-hemispherical closure cap therefor.
4. A fountain pen as dened in claim2, wherein the filler needle portion outer end isttapered to facilitate piercing of the feed closure hemispherical cap end.
