'DENTAL CLEANING COMPACT Filed Aug. 29, 1938 lll/1,111 fill/112,111,111
ATTO RNEYS yPatented Aug. 8, v'1939 DENTAL CLEANING COMPACT I' l wmlo. smun and Elizabeth n. smith, Pittsburgh, Pa.
ysppixauim 'August as. 193s, serial No. 227.4113. 4 claims. (ci. 1x2-s4) 'rms invention relates to toothbrushes, and its general object is lto provide what may-be termed -a dental cleaning compact that includes a toothfbrush, dentifrice container, and a holder therefor, all connected together in a single unit, the holder and brush being foldably associated in a manner for ready disposal of the brush into and out of use and the holder provides a housing for the brush and for the container, so as to retain the same free from dirt, dust or contamination from other foreign inattenand therefore in a clean and sanitary condition.
A further object is to provide a dentifrice cleaning compact in which the brush thereof is pivotally connected to the holder and is spring use when released from ,the holder.
Another object is to provide adental cleaning compact in which the dentifrice container is slidably mounted in the-hoider for disposal into and out. of the path of the bristles of the brush. to receive the bristles when in the path thereof for the dentifrice to adhere thereto, and to allow the brush to snugly iit within 4the holder when the container is out. of said path. l
A still further object is to provide a dental toilet article of the character set forth, that can be folded in a very compact form and retained accordingly, so` that it can be conveniently carried in the purse or vest pocket of the user.
A further object is to provide a dental cleaning compact that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, Iand extremely eiilcient in operation. use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other.'
features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
` In describing the invention indetail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: Figure 1 is a longitudinalsectional view taken through the articlewhich forms thev subject matter `ofthe present invention, in folded position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, with parts in e1evation.,.and illustrates the brush-.extended for use in full lines andthe manner of applyinsthe dentifrice thereto in dotted lines.
Figure' 3 is a top pian viewof the 'article in open `position. with partsinsection. e Y Figure 41s a sectional view approximately on line 4-I of Figure l, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that the holder of our article is shown as being of tubular formation and is made up of a 5 lower body section I and an upper cover section 2, both being of substantially semi-circular channel formation and of the same length, but the body4 section I is of greater cross sectional area than the section 2 and of less diameter, in order 10 to receive the section 2 with its side edge portions in'overlapped association with the side edge portions of the section I, as best shown in Figure 4,
' and to 'set up a frictional engagement therewith e l to hold `the cover section in closed position, as i5 pressed to be urged and held in open position'for f will be apparent.
It will be obvious that the holder provides a housing, and one -of the ends thereof is closed by a wall made up of sections 3I and 4 formedrespectively with the upper and lower channel 20 sections, and the wallsectins lare hingedly secured together for connecting the channelsections accordingly, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2. 'Ihe opposite end ofthe holder or housing is closed by a substantially cylindrical shaped 25y block S that is fixed in th'e channel of the body y section and extendsabove the same for arrangement in the path of the -cover section to receive the same for fitting association therewith, when the cover section is disposed in closed position, as. 3u'
best shown in Figure 4. A
The outer portion of the block i is slotted as at 6 and pivotally mounted in the slot by a pin I is the reduced end 8 `of the handle or shank 9 of the toothbrush i0, the latter including a head 35 of any'suitable shape with bristles II iixed therein. 'I'he pivotal connection of the toothbrush with respect to the housing allows the same to be moved into and out of the housing when they cover section 2 is in open position, as shown, but there "is preferably provided a coil spring I2 surrounding the pin 1, with its end convolutions engaged with the reduced end l and the blocl respectively,
as best shown in Figure 3, to urge and hold the brush to open position, when released from the 45 housing or holder, and' it will be obvious that the brush is released when the cover section 2 is moved to open position. n
yThe dentifrice container is in the form of a tray that includes a body I3 shaped to iit the lower* 0 or body section I for slidablefmovement therein, Y and is retained accordingly, by the inturned upper edges of the body section, and which provide e. tongues Il disposed in overlapped relation with compact will be obvious from the foregoing del scription and the disclosure in the drawing, but it might be mentioned that when it is desired to use the same, the upper cover section 2 is moved to its' open position as best shown in Figure 2, which releases the brush for movement thereof to its i full line position of that figure.4 The dentifrice container is then moved from its normal position of Figure 1 to that `of Figure 2 for disposal in the path of the bristles to receive the same when the lid I5 is in open position. for the application of the dentifrice to the bristles, when the brush is moved to the dotted line position of Figure 2. The brush is then released, `thence the lid I5 and cover section 2 are moved to closed position, and the housing or holder` is then gripped and the brush applied to the teeth in the usual manner, as it is obvious that the holder or housing cooperates with the shank in providing a handle for the brush.
It will be further obvious that the parts of our article may be made from any material suitable for the purpose, and that any kind of dentifrice can` be used and applied within the container, such as powder, paste or the like. 'I'he article can be made in various sizes, but when folded as shown in Figure 1, is very compact and will take up minimum space, so that it cambe readily and conveniently carried in the purse or vest pocket of the user.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent,
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall withinthe scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is:
