This invention relates? toa'device for laying paving stones, particularlyartifioial stones.
Paving by hand requires'relatively much" time, is quite expensiveand: fails to produce thedesirable or necessary uniformity in" laying. Furthermore, it is difiiculttoifind pavers. for'larger jobs.
The invention eliminates these troubles by successively arranging one, frame extending over the entire width of the street orroad, o1" over a portion thereof, an'd'being movable in the longitudinal direction of the street to be paved, a device for plaoingthe embedding'mas's onthe bottom ballasting or metal layer and-planing the mass, a device for layingthe stones intothe eme bedding mass in a regular and accurate manner, and a device for pressing orramming the stones. Paving is thus divided into three'phases, and the corresponding operations can be carried out either simultaneously or successively by the new device;
By way of example, theinventionis illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section showing thedevic'e'in elevatioir as seen from" the street; Fig. 2"is'a plan view of Fig; i; Fig. 3Iis' a cross section of the ramming device; Fig. 4', a partial topview thereof; Fig. 5, a section'on the line 5-5, of Fig; 1'; Fig. 6", a sectiononthe' line B-6, ofFig; 3; and
Fig. l. a perspective vi'ew ofthepavementshowing the three working phases.
Referring to' the drawings, the device: comprises a iramemovableirr thenlongitudinal'direction of the street to be paved and having two side frames l provided with thewh'eels- 2' and connected by the cross struts'3. The frame I, 2, 3 preferably extends over the? entire. width of the street and can be moVed aloIIgthestreet on rails 23; The device for putting Ol'i-"ithG' embedding mass comprises-a funnel-shaped receptacle lhaving smooth walls on all" sides'and movable in a transversedirection*on' thewheels '5. The'hopper or receptacle dis moved alon the rails ruby-hand, or by'any suitablemeans (not shown). The receptacle t'contains the embeddingv material it; such as cement mortar, bitumen mortar, sand, etc'., and during operation discharges its contents in atransverse direction upon the bed or road metal 5. A-bar G 'adjustable as the receptacle The bar 6' may-"be adjustable as to height in any suitable manner. As: shown, it is mounted on a pair of substantially vertical supports li which are slidably connected to the height serves for roughly leveling; the embedding material 25 after. it is. delivered from- 30, 1937; Serial No. 177,382 December 3, 1936 (Cll'. 94-47) frame i of the receptacle Any suitable means (notshown) for maintaining the supports 6 in anadjuste'd position may be used. The hopper l may. be connected with a mixing machine (not shovm) which forms no part of my invention, 5 for the mass. The receptacle 4 can be moved on exciiangeablerails 26 whose top side corresponds to the cross section of the street so as to adapt the mass M to the sectional profile of the street.
For supplying the stones 3 a manually or mechanically operated belt conveyor ill or a slide (not shown) is employed which may be provided with bottom rolls. Nearthe conveyor 21 a narrow platform 'idextends from one side frame to the other for the accommodation of the workers. Beside the platform 28 a frame 9 is dis-' posed andprovided with several rows of staggered compartments or cells Hlwhich are open above and below and into which the stones 8 fit with some play. The upper and lower side of the frame 9 is. adapted to the profile of the street to -be paved. The frame 9 is suspended from wirenropes: l 5' which can be raised andlowered andare guided Lover sheaves l2 on the side frames l. The drive for the sheaves lzconsists for instance of bevel gears it which are turned by means of a crank, lever, etc. to raise or lower the frame 9; When the frame 83 is lowered, the stones 8 are inserted in the cells ill, the walls of which correspond to the joints, and are thus placed in final position on theroad metal 5. After the filling of the cells ID the frame 9 is raised, moved farther along the road bed and lowered again onto the ballasting 5 so as to be -5; indirect connection with the previously laid stones.
The device for pressing or ramming the stones comprises for instance a plurality of wooden ramming planks M which by means of longitudinal irons 29- and transverse reinforcements 30 can be combined to form a plate which at its ends is held by carrying plates it. The carrying plates i5 are guided in a vertical frame it on the side portions l of the movable frame and. with their rolls E'i'moveon a slide it possessing inclined cam surfaces 2i and moved forward and backward by a screw spindle It and a driving Wheel 26. During forward motion of the slide E8 the rolls ii of the carrying plates i5 engage the inclined cam surfaces 2| of the slide l8, whereby the plates l5 and thus the pressure members I dare lifted, whilst rap-id return motion of theispindleificauses the rolls l! to slide ofi fromtheinclined cam surfaces 2| so quickly that the pressure members I4 drop suddenly and strike the rows of stones. Motion of the ramming planks can be effected also by spindles. According to the nature of the stones and embedding material to be used, single planks and Stampers or suitable combinations of both may be employed.
The device functions as follows:
After the embedding material 24 has been placed on the ballasting 5 by the receptacle -4 moving on the frame I, 2, 3 in the transverse direction of the street and the member 6 has preparatorily planed the material the frame I, 2, 3 is moved in the longitudinal direction of the street to the extent of the width of the paving section to be produced while simultaneously an adjustable planer 22 extending over the entire width of the street completes the planing of the embedding mass 24. The frame 9 is then lowmass 24, and the artificial stones 8 disposed on the belt conveyor 27 are it of the frame 9. In the meantime, embedding material is spread over the adjacent portion of the bottom ballasting and preparatorily planed by the member 6. When filled with stones the frame 9 is raised again and the frame I, 2, 3 moved forward to the extent of the width of the section to be paved, so that the ramming device M is disposed above the stones 8 placed in the embedding mass 25. During motion of the frame I, 2, 3 the preparatorily planed section is finished again by the planer 22, so that the frame 9 will be located above the newly finished section and the previously laid rows of stones are rammed or pressed into the embedding material 24 by the pressure member 14 and the stones thus finally set, as indicated in Fig. 7. During the ramming operation fresh stones are placed in the lowered cell frame 9 and in the connecting section of the street embedding material is spread out and subjected to preliminary planing. The frame I, 2, 3 is then advanced again the Width of a section, and the three phases of the paving process can thus be continued and carried out by means of the mechanical equipment.
