Description

1940. J. J. ENGELBREIT MOUTH HYG I ENE K I '1 Filed Feb. 25, 1940 fl V 5 In ven 507 JOSEPH J f/veuemsvv;
A iiomey Patented Dec. 3, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFECE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a kit for facilitating thekeeping of the mouth of the user in a hygienic condition, the general object of the invention being to provide a brush and massage part and a tubular handle forming part for containing cleaning material with valve means for controlling the passage of the material from the tubular part and a cover member for the brush and massage part, whereby the device can be readily carried in the pocket, pocketbook or elsewhere so that it will be at hand when it is desired to clean the teeth or other parts of the mouth.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the'invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the device with the cover thereon.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the cover removed. I
. Figure 3 is a side View with parts in section.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1. Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2. Figure 6 is a section on the line 66 of Figure 1. In these views the numeral I indicates a tubular I member which forms a handle for the device and this member has one end open and this end is adapted to be closed by a threaded plug 2 having a knurled outer part whereby it can be easily threaded into the end of the tubular member or removed therefrom. Theother end of the tubular member is flat and is provided with a stud 3 and a side portion of the member I adjacent this last-mentioned end is formed with a flat part having a hole 4 therein and a U-shaped enlargement 5 is formed on the flat part around the hole with the side portions or limbs of the U-shaped part forming guiding channels 6 for a valve plate I which has an enlarged head part 8 which is provided with the flanges 9 at its side edges and at the rear of the head part, this head part being of substantially T-shape in plan as shown in Figure 5.
An elongated brush backforming member ID carries the bristles I I and said member is formed with a right angularly extending base part I2 which is stepped on its top and which has a hole I3 in its bottom part for receiving the stud 3 of the member I, the stud being cemented or otherwise attached to the walls of the hole to permanently connect the member I0 with the member I. The front part of this base is formed with a T-shaped opening I4 therein for receiving the T-shaped head 8 of the valve plate I and the rear wall of the opening I4 is formed with a recess I5 of elongated form but which has its top terminating short of the top of the base so that therecess is closed at all points excepting the front thereof which. opens out into the slot I4. A projection I6 is formed on the inner face of the head 8 of'the valve plate and is movably arranged in the recess I5 so that it is impossible to'entirely withdraw the valve plate from the guiding means.
Inassembling the parts the valve plate is dropped into position on the member I and then the brush member is placed on top of the member I with the hole I3 receiving the stud 3, after glue, cement or .the likehas been placed on the parts to firmly hold the stud in the hole. Of course, whenthis is done the recess I5 being open at the bottom will receive the projection It of the valve plate and then when the parts are permanently connected together the projection IE will operate in therecess I5 to' limit upward. movement of the valve plate and prevent the valve plate from being entirely removed from the parts but will permit the valve plate to be moved by a finger tip upwardly to a sufl'icient extent to uncover the opening 4 so that some of the contents of the tubular member I can pass through the opening 4 into the hand of the user so it can be placed on the bristles or it can be delivered into a receptacle of any suitable form.
A cover member I! is provided for the brush part, this member being preferably of octagon shape in cross section as shown in Figure 6 with its bottom open so that it can be passed over the brush member into engagement with the base I2 which is of a shape to snugly fit in the lower open end of the cover member and the front of I so constructed and arranged that the device can .be easily carried in the pocket or a pocketbook or the like so that it can be used whenever desired, particularly after eating.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is tobe understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: v
1. A device of the class described comprising a tubular handle part having one end open, a closure for said end, a bristle carrying member having a base at one end, means for connecting the base to .the other endof the tubular part, said tubular part adjacent the last-mentioned end having an outlet opening therein, a sliding 'valve plate for closing the opening; and a cover member for fitting over the bristle carrying member with its open end snugly engaging the base part and having a part thereof engaging the valve plate for holding the same closed.
2. A device of the class described comprising a tubular handle part having one end open, a closure for said end, a bristle carrying member having a base at one end, means for connecting the base to the other end of the tubular part, said tubular part adjacent the last-mentioned end having an outlet opening therein, a sliding valve plate for closing the opening, and a cover member for fitting over the bristle carrying member with its open end snugly engaging the base outlet opening therein and guideways on said side part one on each side of the opening,, a valve plate engaging the guideways for closing the opening and said valve plate having a T-shaped head, a projection on the inner face of said head, a bristle carrying member having a wide base provided with a hole in its bottom part for receiving the projection on the end of the tubular member, said projection being adapted to be permanently fastened in the opening, the front end of the stepped base part having a T-shaped opening therein for slidingly receivin the T- shaped head of the valve plate and the rear wall of said opening having a recess therein for receiving the projection of the valve plate for limiting sliding movement of the plate.
4. A device of the class described comprising a tubular handle member having one end open, a closure member for said end, the other end of the tubular member being flat and having a projection thereon and a side portion at the lastmentioned end of thetubular member having an outlet opening therein and guideways on said side part one on each side of the opening, a
valve plate engaging the guideways for closing the opening and said valve plate having a T- shaped head, a projection on the inner face of said head, a bristle carryingmember having a Wide base provided with a hole in its bottom part for receiving the projection on the end of the tubular member, said projection being adapted to be permanently fastened in the opening, the front end of the stepped base part having "a T- shaped opening therein for slidingly receiving the T-shaped head of the valve plate and the rear Wall of said opening having a recess therein for receiving the projection on the valve plate for limiting sliding movement of the plate, and a cover having its sides and top closed andits bottom open, said cover fitting over the bristle carrying member and the bristles with its open end frictionally engaging the base part of the bristle carrying member and said cover having a notch in its lower end for receiving part of thev valve plate for holding the valve plate closed and said cover member having slots therein.
