Description

Feb. 4, 1941. N. SOLOMON COMB CLEANER Filed May 27, 1940 m m N n l A Y B H W V1 m Z 5 M 1/ 4% w a Patented Feb. 4, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
This invention is a comb cleaner and its dominant object is'realized in providing a spiral brush on a rotatable shaft sustained in spaced depending bearings of a supporting handle having a longitudinal axis out of parallelism with the longitudinal axis of the rotatable shaft whereby when the spiral brush is utilized to remove the clogging material between the teeth of a comb, the spiral brush more readily enters the gaps between the teeth of the comb thus enhancing and facilitating the removal of the objectionable clogging material therefrom. Other important objects and salient functional and structural features of the invention will be readily understood from the following detailed description whenconsidered with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a comb cleaner according to the invention.
Fig. 2. is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an underneath view of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, the comb cleaner comprises a one piece backing ll having a relatively wide tapered distal portion [2 integrally merged with the attenuated handle or proximal portion I3. Extending from the distal portion [2 are the depending but transversely arranged ears l4 each having a socket or bearing l5 for removably but rotatably supporting the terminals of a twisted wire shaft l6 appropriately sustaining the spirally arranged brush H, the arrangement being such that sockets l5 hold shaft l6 so that its long axis is in a biased relation in respect to the longitudinal axis of the backing II which is provided with a peripheral but depending strengthening rim l8 from which in fact ears l4 depend. With the backing disposed substantially perpendicular to the long axis of a comb to be cleaned and since the spiral brush is slightly on a bias in respect to the longitudinal axis of the backing thereof, the several sections of the brush are more readily accessible to and penetrate the gaps between the teeth of the comb to be cleaned, hence desirably removing the clogging matter therein as the handle is displaced lengthwise of the comb and to further facilitate the removal of the objectionable clogging matter, comb means I9 is provided and struck out of the backing l2 defining a plurality of scraping teeth 20 utilized to remove clogging matter in instances where the latter is particularly hardened or cemented between the teeth of the comb .to be cleaned. As illustrated the backing is preferably of metal although if desired a thermo plastic material may be utilized, however in either case ears or wings M are sufficiently resilient to permit convenient insertion or removal of the brush from the backing or mal handle portion, spaced means depending from said distal portion and having alined bearing means, a shaft journaled in said bearing means and having its longitudinal axis disposed out of parallelism with the longitudinal axis of said backing, and a spiral brush fixedly carried by said shaft.
2. In a comb cleaner, a one piece backing comprising a distal portion and an attenuated proximal handle portion, spaced ears depending from said distal portion and having alined bearing means, a shaft removably journaled in said bearing means and having its longitudinal axis disposed out of parallelism with the longitudinal axis of said backing, and a spiral brush carried by said shaft.
3. In a comb cleaner, a one piece backing comprising an attenuated proximal handle portion and a distal portion having a part extending laterally of said handle portion, spaced ears depending from said part and having alined bearing means, a shaft journaled in said bearing means and having its longitudinal axis out of parallelism with the longitudinal axis of said backing, and a spiral brush carried by said shaft.
4. In a comb cleaner, a one piece backing comprising an attenuated proximal handle portion and a distal portion having a part laterally overhanging said handle portion, spaced ears depending from said overhanging portion and having alined bearing means, a shaft journaled in said bearing means and having its longitudinal axis disposed out of parallelism with the longitudinal axis of said backing, and a spiral brush carried by said shaft.
5. In a comb cleaner, a one piece backing comprising an attenuated proximal handle portion and a distal portion having a part laterally overhanging said handle portion, a peripheral rim depending from said backing and comprising spaced portions extending transversely of said laterally overhanging part, spaced ears depending from said spaced portions and having alined bearing means, a shaft journaled in said bearing means and having its longitudinal axis disposed out of parallelism with the longitudinal axis of said backing, and a spiral brush carried by said shaft.
