Description

Patented Jan. 6, l1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAND COVERING Howard G. Wright, Richmond, Va. Application August 22, 1939, SerialNo. 291,447
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to hose protectors particularly for womens silk hose and has for its primary object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this'charac'- ter embodying a novel construction, combination and Iarrangement of parts through the medium of which the user of the same may put on, take off, or otherwise handle hose with a minimumA of danger of causing a run in the same.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a hose protector of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, highly efficient and reliable in use, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following' specilication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, shown mounted for use.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary View of the thumb stall shown in longitudinal transverse section, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional View of the hem portion of the thumb stall.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 5 designates a finger pocket which is secured to a thumb stall 6 through the medium of a suitable length of strap elastic `I.
The finger pocket 5 is constructedfrom a single piece of oiled silk fabric or other suitable material, and is folded at the portion 8 to provide a front or palm portion 9 the end I0 of which is substantially straight. Ihe'back portion Il is cut to form a point I2. The front or palm portion 9 and Iback portion II are secured together, to form the pocket 5, through the medium of rows of stitching, or other suitable means, I3 and I4, beginning at the opposite ends of the portion 8 and extending down the sides of the pocket 5 to the edge I0. A length of suitable binding material I5 is sewed around the open end of the pocket 5 to reinforce the same and prevent fraying.
The thumb stall 6 is constructed of oiled silk fabric and is shaped to substantially conform with the shape of a thumb, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and has a finger grip or tab I6 sewed to or otherwise secured to its outer end 5" portion for removing the same from the thumb. The inner or openl end portion of the thumb stall 6 is turned inward of the same to provide a hem I1 in which is secured a length of cord or other suitable reinforcing means I8, by means of stitching as shown at I9 in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
The strap elastic 'I is secured at one end portion to the back portion II of the pocket 5 at the point I2 while its other end portion passes through an opening 20 in the thumb stall 6 and is secured to an adjustable slide fastener 2| which is mounted on the strap 1 as shown in Fig. 2'of the drawing.
To insure a smooth surface for contact with a h'ose when the device is in use a tapered sleeve 22 of oiled silk fabric, or' other suitable material, is fitted over and sewed as at 23 or otherwise secured to the strap` elastic 1 and back portion them'without fear of damage resulting from sharp finger nails or other obstructions on the hands.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto and any change or changes may be made in the materials and in the structure and arrangement -of parts, within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1.A In a device of the character described, a hand covering including a finger housing pocket and a thumb housing member, said thumb housing member including a sheet of material folded longitudinally upon itself and stitched at the side edge portions opposite said fold to form a stall having a biased open end portion and a side wall :opening in said biased open end portion, a tab secured to and between said side edge porl tions of said stall at its other end portion, a strap secured at one end portion to said fingery housing pocket with its other end-portion extended through the side wall opening in said biased open end portion of thumb stall, andv a slide fastener adjustably mounted on said strap between said thumb stall and said finger housing pocket With the other end portion of the strap secured thereto.
2. In a device of the class described, a hand covering including a mitten-type finger sta-11, and a thumb housing member including a sheet of material folded longitudinally upon itself and stitched together along its side edges to form a stall, a pull tab for the thumb housing member secured to and between said side edges at the outer end of the thumb housing member, and a strap secured at one end to said linger stall and slidably looped through 4an inner end portion of the thumb housing member With its other end slidably connected to an intermediate portion of the strap.
