Description

' Feb-'3, 1942. D. HERTZBERG HAIRBRUSH Filed June 19, 1941 Patented F b. 3, 1942 UNITED, STATE HAIRBBUSH Dorothy Hertzberg, Detroit; Mich, nowby decree of court Dorothy Phillips I I I Application un 19, 1941, Serial No. 398.692
9 Claims. (01. Isa-as) p This imlentiontrelates to a hair brush and more particularly to a novel structure consistin .of arat-tail'handleportion formed integral with 1 aj -blfitle supporting portion with an intermediately'dispo'sed upright' thumb engaging member.
7 Heretofore; in brushes of this type their effectivenessfhas been substantially impaired due Iv to turning. of the same in the operator's hand when in use. Heretofore with brushes of this type considerable difficulty has been experienced in the manipulation of the same in, for instance,
brushing outcurls wherein it is desired. to manually rotate or whirl the brush for forming curls of one type or another.
Itis the object of this invention to provide a somewhat simplified brush adapted for forming curls which is provided with suitable finger or thumb engaging means for permitting a firm grip thereon.
It is the further object of 'this invention to provide in combination with a brush of this type a'rat-tail handle which is readily adaptable for setting curls by whirling the rat-tail end of the brush on the inside of a curl.
'It is the further'object of this invention to provide a novel hair brush which is character- 'ized by means for facilitating quick manipula tion of the same.
It is the still further object of this invention to provision integral with said handle a bristle said finger or thumb engaging member and in 40 the same. plane thereof.
This invention relates to the various combinations of elements hereinafter to be described in detail in connection with the drawing of which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the brush.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view thereof.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view thereof with the bristles omitted for convenience of illustration.
Figure 5 is a top plan view thereof and Figure 6 is a perspective view of a slightly different embodiment with a ,combmember integral therewith.
The above drawing is merely an illustration of applicant's preferable embodiment of the invention, it being understood that it is notintended that the invention be limited thereby.
In the drawing the brush consists'preferably 5 of a rat-tail handle member II which is'of a substantially'small diameter on its end 12 and which progressively increases in size in an elliptical shape up to substantially .the pointl3 as best illustrated in Figure 3.
The bristle supporting member formed integrally with said handle H is substantially oblong'and approximately circular in cross section as is seen in Figure 3.
The bristles ii are longitudinally disposed in a 15 plurality of rows on said bristle supporting member ll, radially diverging as shown in Figure 5.
A finger or thumb engaging member I6 is centrally disposed intermediate the handle H and the brush supporting member l4 and'integral therewith. Furthermore member I6 is centrally suitable gripping means.
It will be noted that the thumb engaging member I 6 is'moulded as an integral part of the brush with the edges thereof forming a smooth continuation of the handle and bristle support respectively. 4
In applicant's preferable embodiment the brush is formed in a mould from aplastic material which is preferably transparent or translucent. Suitable longitudinally disposed openings are provisioned in rows in theupper surface of the bristle supporting means adapted to receive and snugly retain and secure bristle members I5.
Referring to Figure 6 which shows a slightly different embodiment of the invention, a comb member I8 is shown with its teeth' l9 formed integrally with the bristle supporting member M. The comb member I8 is diametrically disposed with respect to the bristles l5 and is adapted for alternate and convenient application to the hair'before or after brushing.
' It will be seenythat thecoinb member I 8 is moulded with and forms. an integral part of the brush, and its versatility is readily apparent.
Having described my invention reference should now be had to the claims which follow for determining the scope hereof.
I claim: p
l. The combination, a rat-tail handle member. a bristle supportingmember adapted to receive and secure a plurality of bristles, and an intermediate upright thumb' engaging member.
2. A brush comprised 01' a substantially elliptical rat-tail handle, a bristle supporting member formed integral therewith of substantially circular cross section adapted to support a plurality oi bristles, and an intermediate upright finger engaging member radially disposed with respect to said handle.
3. A hair brush comprised of a rat-tail handle, a brush supporting member formed integrally therewith, and, an intermediate upright thumb engaging member with arcuate recesses on the sides thereof to provide gripping means therefor.
4. A hair brush comprised of a rat-tail handle, a bristle supporting member with a, plurality of longitudinally and radially disposed recesses, a plurality of rows of radially disposed bristles secured within said recesses, and an upright thumb engaging member intermediate said handle and said bristle supporting member.
5. A hair brush as described in claim 4, said thumb engagingmember being recessed on both sides thereof to form a gripping means and with the plane thereof coinciding substantially with the central row of bristles.
6. The combination with a hair brush consisting of a rat-tail handle, a bristle supporting means integral therewith, and an intermediate upright thumb engaging member; 0! a comb oppositely disposed from said thumb engaging member.
7. The combination with a hair brush consisting of a rat-tail handle, a bristle supporting means integral therewith, and an intermediate upright thumb engaging member; of a comb with the teeth thereof formed integrally with said bristle supporting member.
8. A hair brush comprised oi a'rat-tail handle substantially elliptical in shape, a bristle supporting member substantially circular in cross section with a plurality of recesses therein adapted to receive and secure a plurality of radially disposed bristles, an intermediate upright finger engaging member integral with said handie and said bristle supporting member, and a comb with the teeth thereof forming a part of said bristle supporting member and being oppositely disposed from said iln'ger engaging mem- .ber.
9. The combination, a handle member, a bristle supporting member adapted to receive and secure a plurality of bristles, and an intermediate upright thumb engaging member.
DOROTHY HERTZBERG.
