6 Claims.
This invention relates to cosmetic applying devices and `relates more particularly vto devices for containing and applying paste lip rouge, mascara, and the like. A general object of this invention is to provide a cosmetic applicator of the charvacter mentioned that is simpleand inexpensive to manufacture and that is easy and convenient to use.
Another obj ect of this invention is to provide a cosmetic applicator including an applying means or brush means .for applying the cosmetic and a novel, effective means for delivering or ejecting the cosmetic to -the brush means.
Another object of this invention -is -to provide a cosmetic applicator of the -character mentioned in which the applying means or brush means is automatically loosened and slightly projected for `easy removal when the ejecting means reaches the end of its-ejection Vmovement to `indicate that the supply of cosmetic is exhausted and to facilitate the reloading of the -cosmetic supply chamber to condition the device for further use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cosmetic applicat-ion of the character mentioned in which the brush means is secured to the-body without the use of threads and in such amanner that it Amay be easily removed and reapplied.
Another object of this invention 'is to provide a cosmetic application of the character menf tioned in which' the ejecting plunger cannot be 30 lost or disconnected and does not require re- Y moval when the cosmetic container is to be refilled.

The improved cosmetic applicator of the present invention may be said to comprise, generally, a body I0 for containing a supply of the cosmetic, applying means or brush means II on the Ybody Ill and ejecting means I2 for ejecting vthe cosmetic from the body IEB to the brush The Ibody I0 forms a container for the supply of` cosmetic and serves to support the several other parts of the device. The various objects and features of -my invention will be fully understood from the following detailed description of a typical, preferred form and application of the invention, throughout which description reference is made to the accompanying drawing, vin which:

An annular groove 23 is formed in the carrier 2| at the inner end of its tapered portion 22 and the carrier has a cylindrical surface 24 extending rearwardly from the groove 23. The extreme inner end of the carrier 2| has a bevelled surface 25 with a substantial pitch. A shoulder 26 is formed on the carrier 2| to engage the forward end of the body I0. With the tapered portion 22 fully seated in the socket I3 the shoulder 26 engages the forward end of the body I to position or stop the carrier where its groove 23 registers with the groove I4 and Where its surface 24 seals in the cylindrical body wall I5.
The forward portion of the carrier 2| projecting forwardly from the body I9 has two longitudinally curving and forwardly converging side surfaces 21. The other side surfaces of the projecting portion of the carrier 2| also converge forwardly but may be convex. An opening 28 extends longitudinally through the brush carrier 2|. The inner portion of the opening 28 is cylindrical and of substantial diameter. ward portion of the opening 28 is elongate in transverse cross section having two opposite side walls 29 that are substantially flat. The forward portion of the opening 28 is tapered, the
walls 29 and the other wall parts of the opening converging forwardly. The walls 29 of the tapered part of the opening 28 are generally parallel with the side surfaces 21 of the carrier. The relationship between the converging part of the opening 28 and the tapered projecting portion of the carrier 2| is illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 5.
The brush carrier 2| is removably secured in the body III in such a manner that the ejecting means I2 may free it for easy removal. The means for removably securing the carrier 2| in the body I I) comprises a split spring ring 30 cooperating with the registering grooves I4 and 23. istry and the spring ring 30 is in cooperation with both grooves to dependably retain the carrier. The groove I4 is of substantial depth and is capable of entirely receiving the split spring ring 30. When the carrier 2| is to be applied to the body III its tapered portion 22 is inserted in the socket I3 and is moved inwardly until the bevelled surface engages the spring ring 38. The engagement of the bevelled surface 25 with the spring ring 3U expands the ring and the ring is forced outwardly in the groove I4 to allow the cylindrical portion 24 of the carrier to move' through the ring. When the carrier 2| reaches its final position the ring snaps into the groove 23 to lock or retain the carrier in place.
The spring ring 39 is constructed so that its contraction is limited and the ring remains partially engaged in the groove I4 when the carrier 2| is removed from the body II). The walls of the groove 23 are preferably curved or convex so that an outward pressure applied to the inner end of the carrier 2| operates to expand the spring ring 38 so that the inner part of the carrier may suddenly move through the ring. It is to be understood that the spring ring 36 cooperating with the registering grooves I4 and 23 normally securely holds the carrier 2| in the position where its tapered portion 22 seats in the socket I3 and its cylindrical portion 24 seals with the cylindrical wall I5.
The applying means or brush means I I further includes a tubular brush shank 3| arranged lonf gitudinally in the opening 28 of the carrier 2|. The rear or inner portion of the shank 3| is cylindrical and is provided with an annular flange 32 that is press tted in the opening 28. The forward portion of the shank 3| is tapered and elongated in transverse cross section having two substantially flat sides converging forwardly in substantially parallel relation with the walls 29 of the opening 28. Because of this formation of the shank 3| the forward end of its opening 33 is restricted in capacity land is elongated in transverse cross section. The outer end of the shank 3| is substantially flush with the forward end of the carrier 2 I.
The brush means |I further includes brush tufts or bristles 34 set in the opening 28 around the shank 3| to project from the forward end of the carrier. The group or tuft of bristles 34 completely surrounds the shank 3| and the bristles project a substantial distance from the forward extremity of the carrier 2|. The bristles 34 are set in wax 35 or a mixture of wax and rosin that is unaffected by the cosmetic and that will not become brittle or flake off. It will be observed that. the set portions of the bristles 34 are wedged or securely held between the tapering walls of the opening 28 and the tapered forward portion of the shank 3|. The forward ends of the transversely elongated opening 28 and shank 3| shape the assembly of bristles 34 so that it too is elongate in transverse cross section. It will be observed that the oval or transversely elongated opening 33 discharges the cosmetic into the correspondingly shaped projecting portion of the bristle assembly. The flattened or oval assembly of brush tufts 34 may be employed to accurately and correctly apply the cosmetic.
The ejecting means I2 includes a plunger 36 operable in the cosmetic supply opening I6. The plunger 36 is secured to the forward end of a threaded stem 3'I. In accordance with the invention the plunger 36 is oval in end view to operate with suitable clearance in the oval opening I6. A circumferential groove is provided in the plunger 36 to carry Ia sealing element or packing ring 31a. The ring 3'|a is oval in shape to correctly seal with the wall of the oval opening I3. The plunger 36 has a forward flange or part 38 immediately in front of the packing ring 31 that serves to assist in retaining the ring in place. This part 38 is considerably smaller in diameter than the opening I6 and, therefore, may be cylindrical. The part 38 being reduced in diameter prevents the packing ring 3'|a from being cut or sheared off when the plunger 36 is inserted in the forward end of the body I8 when the device is assembled. When the plunger 36 is entered in the body I0 the packing ring 3'|a merely fiexes in against the reduced part 38 and is unharmed. The reduced forward part 38 of the plunger 36 is engageable with the inner end of the brush carrier 2| when the plunger reaches the forward end of its movement and this engagement may cause the above described expansion of the spring ring 39 and a slightly forward movement of the brush carrier 2| relative to the body I0. Forward movement of the plunger 36 in the opening I6 of course forces or ejects the cosmetic from the body I0 into the assembly of bristles 34.
The ejecting means I2 further includes a tube 39 preferably formed of metal and extending longitudinally through the reduced body opening I'I. The tube 39 is turnable in the opening I'|. An enlargement or flange 4U on the tube 39 is engageable with the shoulder i8 to prevent rearward movement of the tube. The forward portion 4| 'of the tube 3-9 is reduced in diameter and is internally threaded, The internal `thread on the tube portion 4I mates with -the thread -of the stem 3l. The tube 39 extends rearwardly beyond the rear end of the body I B and is provided with a manually engageable operating part. This operating part may be in the nature of a knob or head 42 shaped to complement the rear end portion of the body l0. T-he -head 4`2 has a socket 43 and the projecting rear portion of the tube 33 is roughened or knurled and forcetted in the socket 43 to secure the head to the tube. Prior to the application of the head 42 to the tube 33 the inner end of the stem 31 is spread to prevent the stem from being entirely unthreaded from the tube 39. A tapered socket M may be formed in the rear end of the stem 3l to facilitate the spreading of the stem. The
spread end of the stem 3l is engageable with the reduced forward portion 4I of the tube 33 to prevent unthreading or disconnection of this stem from the tube.
In the use or operation of the device the cap 29 may normally enclose the projecting bristles 34 and the projecting portion of the carrier 2l. When the device is to be used the cap is removed and the head 42 is turned with respect to the body I0. This produces rotation of the tube 39 relative to the stern 31. The oval plunger 35 riding in the oval opening I6 holds the stem 3l against turning relative to the body l0. Turning of the tube 39 relative to the stem 3'! threads or advances the plunger 35 in the opening l5. The advancing plunger 35 forces or ejects a quantity of the cosmetic through the openings 28 and 33 into the projecting portions of the bristles 34. The cosmetic is then applied by means of the bristles 36. The projecting portion of the bristle assembly is elongate in transverse cross section or flattened so that the cosmetic may be applied with great accuracy. Following the use of the device the cap 20 is reapplied to the body I8.
After repeat-ed use the plunger 36 approaches the forward end of its stroke yand the plunger part 38 engages the inner end of the carrier 2|. When this occurs the supply of the cosmetic is exhausted. By forcibly turning the head 42 with respect to the body It! the part 38 is forcibly moved against the inner end of the carrier 2| to move the carrier forwardly. When the outward or forward force is applied to the inner end of the carrier 2| the spring ring 30 expands in the groove M and the cylindrical portion 24 of the carrier snaps into the ring. This frees the carrier 2i and brings the carrier to a position where its shoulder 26 is beyond the forward end of the body E8. The sudden but slight forward movement of the carrier 2i from the body l0 indicates to the user that the supply of the cosmetic is exhausted. The ring 30 remains in gripping or holding engagement with the cylindrical portion 24 to prevent unintentional displacement of the loosened carrier 2l. The parts are related so that the spread end of the stem 3l at the socket 44 engages the restriction 4I to stop the for- Ward movement of the plunger 3B so that the plunger remains in the oval opening I6 and the plunger cannot be disengaged from the opening I6. The freed or loosened carrier 2l is removed from the body Hl and the head 42 is threaded to retract the plunger 36. A replacement supply of the cosmetic is introduced into the opening I6 and the brush carrier 2| is Areinserted in .the forward end of the .body 10 to condition the device for further use. The plunger stem 31 is received in the tube 39 which Ypasses rearwardly from the body I and the stem 3l may .be of substantial length so that the plunger v3S has a long stroke. The device 4is easy .to operate and embodies a minimum number of parts.
Having described only atypical preferred form `and application of my invention, 'I do not wish to Vbe limited or restricted to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to myself anyv variations or modifications that may appear to those skilled in the art, or fall within the scope of the following claims:
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A cosmetic applicator comprising a body 'having an opening forming a reservoir for the cosmetic, cosmetic applying means removably secured to the body to have its inner `face at an end of the body opening and to be freed for ready removal by an outward thrust, a plunger operable in the body opening V.to eject the -cosmetic to the applying means and engageable with the inner face of the applying means to exert an outward force thereon and thus free the applying means for removal when the supply of cosmetic is exhausted and means for operating the plunger.
2. A cosmetic applicator comprising a body forming a container for the cosmetic, cosmetic applying means, means securin-g the applying means to an end of the body releasable by an outward force on the applying means, and ejecting means for ejecting the cosmetic from the body to the applying means operable to apply an outward force to the applying means to release the securing means and move the applying means outward when the supply of cosmetic in the body is exhausted, the ejecting means including a plunger operable in the body and having a part engageable with the applying means, and means for moving the plunger in the body,
3. A cosmetic applicator comprising a body having an opening for containing a cosmetic, cosmetic applying means comprising a carrier having a passage adapted to communicate with the body opening, and bristles on the carrier for receiving cosmetic from the passage, releasable means securing the carrier in the body opening to have the bristles project beyond the body and adapted to be released by an outward force on the carrier, a plunger operable in the body opening to eject cosmetic from the opening to the bristles and engageable with the carrier to exert an outward force on the carrier to release said releasable means when the supply of cosmetic in the opening is exhausted, and means for operating the plunger.
4. A cosmetic applicator comprising a body having an opening for containing a cosmetic, there being a tapered socket in the body at the outer end of the opening, a tapered member removably fitting the socket and having a passage for conducting cosmetic from the opening, cosmetic applying means on the member receiving cosmetic from the passage, the body and member having registering grooves, a spring ring cooperating with the grooves to hold the member in the socket and releasable by outward pressure on the member, a plunger in the opening, and means for operating the plunger to eject the cosmetic to the cosmetic applying means and operable to move the plunger against the member to exert an outward pressure thereon and thus release the spring ring when the cosmetic supply in the body opening is exhausted.
5. A cosmetic applicator comprising a body having an opening for containing a cosmetic, there being a tapered socket in the body at the outer end of the opening, a tapered member removably tting the socket and having a passage for conducting cosmetic from the opening, cosmetic applying means on the member receiving cosmetic from the passage, the body and member having registering grooves, a spring ring cooperating with the grooves to hold the member in the socket and releasable by outward pressure on the member, a bevelled surface on the inner end of the member for expanding the spring ring into the groove of the body when the member is introduced into the socket, a plunger in the opening, and means for operating the plunger to eject the cosmetic to the cosmetic applying means and operable to move the plunger against the member to exert an outward pressure thereon and thus release the spring ring when the cosmetic supply in the body opening is exhausted.
6. A cosmetic applicator comprising a body having an opening for containing a cosmetic. there being a tapered socket in the body at the outer end of the opening, a tapered member removably fitting the socket and having a passage for conducting cosmetic from the opening, cosmetic applying means on the member receiving cosmetic from the passage, the body and member having registering grooves, a spring ring cooperating With the grooves to hold the member in the socket and releasable by outward pressure on the member, the body and member having cooperating centering and sealing surfaces at opposite sides of the registering grooves, a plunger in the opening, and means for operating the plunger to eject the cosmetic to the cosmetic applying means and operable to move the plunger against the member to exert an outward pressure thereon and thus release the spring ring when the cosmetic supply in the body opening is exhausted.
