  • My invention relates to the utilization of a fingernail as a convenient mounting for tools such as writing instruments, stencil tracing knives, plectrums for stringed instruments, styli, scribes, finger cots, other finger guards et cetera. It relates particularly to a fastener for conveniently attacking rigidly and securely a tool to a fingernail and for. conveniently detaching said tool from said fingernail, said fastener thus enabling the fingernail to serve as a convenient mounting for said tool.

FINGERNAIL uoum'mc FOR WRITING INSTRUMENTS Fild Oct. 31, 1949 v INVENTOR Patented July 15, 1952 7% 3UN1TED STATES Application My invention relates to the utilization of a fingernail as a convenient mounting for tools such as writing instruments, stencil tracing knives, plectrums for stringed instruments, styli, scribes, finger cots, other finger guards et cetera. It relates particularly to a fastener for conveniently attacking rigidly and securely a tool to a fingernail and for. conveniently detaching said tool from said fingernail, said fastener thus enabling the fingernail to serve as a convenient mounting for said tool. An object is to provide such a fastener.,

I attain these objects by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- I Figure 1 is a view of fastener component I integral with a detached portion of writing instrument 2 along the plane I-I, Figure 3.
Figure 2 is a view of fastener component 8 and a detached portion of finger-tip 6 along the plane 2-2, Figure 5.
Figure 3 is a front view of a writing instrument 2 integral with fastener component I.
Figure 4 is a side view of the assembly of the fastener component I and fastener component 8 which latter is bonded to fingernail 5 by means I of intermediate adhesive coating 4.
Figure 5 is a side view of fastener component 8 bonded to a fingernail 5 of finger-tip 6.
Figure 6 is a top view of fastener component 8 integral with a thin flexible glass fabric I4; Figure 8 is a right sectional view of the same, and Figure 9 is a side view of the same.
Figure 7 is a side view of a fastener component of an alternative type which permits a writing instrument 2 to be pivoted in relation to a fingernail.
Figure 10 is an axial view of pin I shown in Figure 4; and Figure 11 is an end view of the same.
In Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are shown the writing instrument 2 integral with a fastener I having a dove-tailed groove formed between lateral elements I and equal transverse holes 3 for adjustably interlocking with transverse hole 9 of equal diameter in fastener component 8 having a dove-tailed tongue which fits snugly in dovetailed groove of fastener component I. Fastener component 8 is adapted to be conveniently and securely bonded to fingernail 5 of finger-tip 6 by means of the intermediate adhesive coating 4. Any of the holes 3 may be alined with hole' 9 and the alined holes 3 and 9 may be securely pinned by pin Fastener component I is ad- October 31, 1949, Serial No. 124,550: 7 soni s. The fastener component 'I may be fixed to other types of tools than writing instruments 2 and the other tools mentioned above. l
The portion of pin 1 which projects out of hole 9 may have an annular groove with an open washer fitted tightly in it to hold it more securely or it may have fitted'in said groove a mechanical fastener disclosed in my copending application for patent Serial Number 168,691, filed June 1'7, 1950, now abandoned. Pin I fits inalined holes 3 and 9 very tightly and frictionally.
In Figures 6, 8 and 9 is shown a fastener component 8 integral with a thin flexible glass fiber fabric I4 which latter enables component 8 to be'bonded to a fingernail more securely :and rigidly.
In Figure 7 is shown a writing instrument 2 integral with fastener sub-component I3 havin a longitudinal central channel which is engaged by extension I2 and the top portion of the complementary sub-component II] which latter is adapted to be conveniently and securely bonded to a fingernail. A portion of said channel of subcomponent I3 is deepened to accommodate extension I2. Extension I2 and the lateral elements of said channel fit frictionally and resiliently very tightly and have alined holes which are pinned by rivet I2 so that sub-components I3 and III are mutually hinged very tightly by frictional contact. Fastener sub-components I3 and Ill together constitute a fastener component which can engage interlockingly fastener component 8 by means of holes I I in a manner similar to the manner in which fastener component I engages fastener component 8. This type of fastener component constituted by sub-components I3 and II] can interlock with fastener component 8 and is adjustable angularly in relation to the latter as well as being adjustable up and down in relation to it.
The fastener component 8 may remain bonded to a fingernail as long as a user desires, perhaps for many months, and enables a tool like a ball point pen to be readily fastenable detachably and at a proper adjustment in relation to the fingernail. The advantages of comfort, ease and speed'of writing thus instead of thebonventional manner would be obvious to anybody who needs to do much continuous writing such as ledger entry clerks and envelope vaddressers and who experienced writing thus. One of the advantages is avoidance of pressure of a writing instrument againstthe middle finger; which pressure'often able with respect to the end of the fingernail,v and means cooperating with said tongue and groove components to selectiyelxi'fmaintain':said
