Description

March 3, 1953 ALINE LENGYl-:L NEEPANAS 2,629,889
MAKE-UP PENCIL Filed may 21, 194e ALINE LENGYEL NEE PANAs #Hor/zeg y Patented Mar. 3, 1953 moet UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MAKE-UP PENCIL Aline Lengyel, nee Panas, Paris, France Application May 21, 194s, serial 1810.28.481 In France May 30,v 1947 The invention relates to means for applying make-up material such as rouge and the like and the primary object of the invention is to provide amake-up pencil comprisinga container adapted to contain and dispense liquid make-up material for the lips, eyebrows, etc.
The lipsticks known and used heretofore do not lend themselves to impart the desired shape to the lips, because said lip-sticks do not retain a shape, pointed enough for this purpose. the other hand it has been impossible heretofore for a lady to carry liquid make-up material for her lips and eyes safely in her handbag.
Another object of the invention is to provide a make-up pencil of the character indicated above,
in the container of which a plunger is arranged, adapted to expel the desired quantity of the liquid make-up material through anarrow outlet provided at the forward end of the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a make-up pencil of the character indicated above, the outlet of which is covered by a hollow conical eye brow pencil, a fine brush or the like toreceive the liquid make-up material expelled by the plunger from the container and facilitate the transfer of said material to the lips, eye" brows, etc. 4 s v l A still further objectof the invention is to provide a make-up pencil of the character indicated above equipped with means`l` for preventingl spilling or dripping of liquidv make-up material contained in the pencil or adherent on theL pencil brush, when said pencil is not iniuse, and is located in a hand-bag, powder box or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a make-up pencil, thel plunger of which is adapted to be used for refilling of the container with the liquid make-up material as well as for expelling said liquid from said container.
Other objects of the invention not speciiically mentioned may appear in the following specifica- 2 claims. (C1. i-iev) 2 parts inA elevation of a make-up pencil embodying the invention. V
Figure 1-A is a sectional view on the line X-X of Figure 1,;
Figure 2 is a vieu/.similar to Figure ,1, but illustrating another embodiment of the invention.-
The make-up pencil embodied herein comprises a casing i0 having aninwardly extending annular dange II on its rear end. The forward end portion of the casing I5 is interiorly threaded as at I2. A disk I3 is provided with an outside thread I4' and is screwed into the forward end portion of the casing Il). The'forward surface of the disk I3 has a central forwardly extending boss I5 which is arranged concentrically with the disk, and formed through the disk and the boss is the tapering, centrally locatedY conical opening i'. On the disk I3 a forwardly extending conical hollow pencil or ne brush Il is securely mounted covering thev conical opening I6.
A cylindrical container I8 is located inside the casing Ill and has' at its forward end a comparatively small conicalnozzle I9 projecting into and.y secured in `the conical openingl YI6 in the disk I3. The container I8.eXtends partway over the length' ofthe casing I0 and has on its rear end a semi-cylindrical prolongation 2i] f ,orthe purpose of imparting a nrm position to the con-V extends coaxiall'ytherewith in forward direction.
therefrom. An internally threaded bushing 25 is mounted on the Aspindle 24 and is provided with outwardly extending guide4 lugs 2B resting against the longitudinal edge surfaces of` the semi-cylindrical container prolongation 2li. The casingl,iscoveredwith a cap 21 containing a suitable plasticjmaterial Zpand in this materialy a conicaljcavity filis provided adapted to receive thesmall brushy I'I. n
'Ifhe above described make-up pencil'is operl ated as" follows; thecap 2l isremoved and the spindle`24` istrotated' by means of the disk 22 so that the bushing 25, which is prevented from rotating by the engagement of the guide lugs 26 with the container prolongation 2i), is urged to travel forwardly on the spindle, engaging the plunger 2| and urging it forwardly in the container IS, which contains the liquid material 30. The forward movement of the plunger 2| expels the make-up material through the nozzle I9, into the hollow pencil or small brush |1, by means of which it is applied to the lips, eyebrows, etc. By turning the disk 22 slowly, only the desired quantity of make-up material is expelled, and when the cap 2.' is put on the casing IG the filled makeup pencil can be carried safely in a hand bag or the like.
In Figure 2 a slightly modified form of the make-up pencil in accordance with the present invention is illustrated. The casing 3|, the disk 32 and the hollow pencil or eyebrow brush 33 are similar to the corresponding parts l0, I3 and l1 described above and are assembled in the same way as explained above. A container 34 for liquid make-up material 35 is located in the forward end portion of the casing 3|, so that the forward wall 36 of the container abuts the rear side of the disk 32. A central conical nozzle 31 extends forwardly from the container through and is secured to the disk 32 into the hollow pencil 33. A plunger the container 34 and performs the functions of a piston. In the rear end portion of the casing 3| a disk 33 similar to and corresponding with the above described disk 22 is located and a threaded spindle 49 is rigidly mounted on and extends forwardly from the disk 39, which is firmly secured in position in the casing 3|. A tapped bushing 4| is threadedly mounted on the spindle 40 and can be manipulated by reaching into the housing 3| through an opening 42 provided in the casing below the rear edge of the container 34. By rotating the bushing 4| so that it advances on the stationary spindle 43, the plunger 38 will be engaged by the bushing and is pushed forwardly in the container expelling liquid make-up matter through the nozzle 31 into the eyebrow pencil 33. The plunger 38 is releasably connected with the bushing 4I by any conventional means. In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 2 a plurality of clips 43, having webs, from one end of which a flange extends in one direction and from the; other end of which a second flange extends in the opposite direction, are secured with one of their flanges to the rear side of the plunger 38 and the bushing 4| is provided adjacent its forward end with a circumferential groove 44, which is slidably engaged by the other flanges of the clips 43, so that the plunger and the bushing are connected with each other and the bushing may be moved rotatably relative to the plunger. By rotating the bushing in one direction the two members will be moved forwardly and by rotating it in the opposite direction, they are retracted. In this manner, the plunger 38 serves as a pump piston, ejecting liquid make-up material, when being moved forwardly and adapted to suck such material into the container 34 when being retracted.
