1 Claim. (Cl. 132120) The present invention relates to a dual purpose device which is herein designated as a combined comb and brush, a construction which is characterized by a single head and handle, brush means on one side or face of the head, and comb means on the other side thereof, these being thus handily interrelated for selective combing and brushing purposes.
The art to which the invention relates teaches that a combination comb and brush is not new. A survey of the prior art reveals, as a matter of fact, that there are many and varied styles of so-called comb and brush combinations. The obvious object of the instant invention is to structurally and functionally improve upon analogous constructions and, in doing so, to provide an improved and satisfactory adaptation in which manufacturers, retailers, users and others, will find their respective requirements and needs effectually met.
More specifically, the improved construction herein disclosed contemplates the use of a head which is preferably curved in a lengthwise direction to provide slight convex and concave sides with correspondingly curved comb and brush facilities, which arrangement, it is believed, is advantageous over broadly similar prior art combinations.
Another object has to do with the elongate and curvate design in the head construction and wherein one side or face has a groove forming a keyway and into which a key on the attachable and detachable comb is removably fitted, the curved construction serving to more satisfactorily bind the comb in its intended position, whereby to guard against accidental displacement while in use.
A further object has to do with the provision of a groove which constitutes a keyway and which is dovetail in cross-section to accommodate a correspondingly shaped keying rib on the back of the comb and wherein the stated comb back is of a cross-section greater than the mouth of the groove or keyway so that it provides projecting or overhanging shoulders which overlap the cooperating head surfaces to thus effect the satisfactory and substantially liquid-proof joint between the back of the comb and the head on which it is mounted.
Other objects, features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:
Figure l is a side elevational view, on a relatively small scale, of a combination comb and brush with the brush bristles on the convex top and the comb on the concave bottom;
Figure 2 is a side elevation on a slightly larger scale wherein the comb and brush facilities are reversed;
Figure 3 is a further enlarged cross-section on the irregular vertical line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the attachable and detachable comb.
Referring now to the drawings with the aid of reference head 6 and handle 8; It may be stated in this connection that any suitable material, such as commercial plastics and nylon or similar bristles may be employed. The head is generally rectangular, and therefore elongate in plan, and may be of the cross-section shown in Figure 3, which has a surface 10 and a reduced rib-like portion 12 providing a complemental surface 14. The lengthwise marginal edge portions are denoted by the numerals iii-16. The forward transverse end is denoted at 18, and the rearward handle-equipped transverse end is denoted by the numeral 20. Batches or tufts of suitable bristles 22 are provided and these are mounted on and project laterally from the brushing or brush-forming side or surface. The readily attachable and detachable comb 24 is mounted on and projects laterally from the other, that is, the comb side or surface. In the arrangement seen in Figure 3, there is a lengthwise centrally disposed dove-tail groove 26 which constitutes a keyway. This serves to accommodate the correspondingly shaped rib, that is, the key-forming rib 27 carried by the so-called back 28 of the comb. The teeth are denoted by the numeral 3%). It will be observed that the basal or attaching portion of the back 28 is of greater cross-section than the relatively narrow mouth of the groove which opens through the surface 14. This means, therefore, that the back thus provides overhanging shoulders 3232 which firmly contact the surface 14 and provide a satisfactory joint and seal. The keyway opens through the transverse end 18 and the opposite end terminates short of the transverse end 20 so that this end is, therefore, closed.
It is within the purview of the invention to have the bristles on either the top or bottom, as shown respectively in Figures 1 and 2. In either instance, the head is longitudinally curved on what may be described as a slow curve. This makes one side of the head concave and the other side convex. This is important in that the curvature of the key 27 and keyway 26 serves to bind these parts more satisfactorily together and there is little likelihood of the comb being accidentally displaced or even moved during the time it is in use. On the other hand, with a little force, one can slide the comb out endwise and replace it with another comb. This brings out the fact that the invention involves the use of several or more attachable and detachable combs which have standardized keying or attaching ribs. For example, in Figure l, the comb is provided with fine teeth 34 at one end and coarser teeth 36 at the other end. In Figure 2, the comb has all coarse teeth 38. In the modification in Figure 4, the comb has all fine teeth 40.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A hair comb and brush combination comprising a longitudinally elongated transversely broad brush head, a handle secured to and projecting beyond one transverse end of said head, brush bristles permanently mounted on, substantially covering, and projecting outwardly, the brushing face of said head, the other face of said head having a centralized longitudinally extending groove dovetail in cross-section and providing a keyway, said groove being closed at the end adjacent to said one transverse eud of said head and opening at its opposite end through the other transverse end of said head, and a readily applicable and removable hair comb of a length approximating the length of said head, said comb embodying a back with teeth projecting outwardly from one lengthwise edge and a key-forming rib integral with and projecting inwardly from the other lengthwise edge, said rib corresponding in shape and size to the shape and size of said groove, the narrower mouth portion of said groove opening through said other face of said head, and the cross-section of the back of said comb being appreciably greater than the Width of said mouth and provid ing shoulders which project to opposite side surfaces of said rib, said shoulders overlapping and firmly contacting the surfaces of said other face on opposite sides of said groove and effecting a sealed liquid-tight joint between the head and comb, said head, groove, back of the comb and key-forming rib being correspondingly curved in a lengthwise direction, whereby a firm friction-bound keying action is attained and accidental displacement of the comb is accordingly prevented.
