6 Claims. (Cl. 132-79) The invention relates to a cosmetic make-up kit, and more particularlyto a kit comprising an applicator for cosmetic material. An accessory tool is provided such as an eyebrow pencil or a comb. A container is provided for fluid such *as mascara to be applied with the applicator to the eyelashes.
In my application S.N. 560,570, filed January 23, 1956', for Eye Make-up Kit, now Patent 2,829,655 dated April 8, 1958, I have disclosed and claimed a kit wherein the applicator is 'a brush and the tool is a comb, the container, brush and comb being housed together in a unitary package. Also, there is provided a container cap which serves the double function of supporting the brush and the comb, a cover for the comb removably fitting the cap and serving as a handle for the brush when the cap" is removed from the container, with the cover fitting on the cap, the container serving as a handle for the comb when the cap is on the container with the cover removed. Also, a sleeve was provided tose-rve as an abutment or restricted opening to remove excess fluid fromthe brush when the brush was removed from the container. In that case, the neck of the container was provided with an external thread to receive the' internal thread on a mounting member which removably supported a cap for the comb as Well as serving as a support for the shank of the comb and the shank of the brush, a sleeve insert being employed between the mount and the neck of the container to'provide a seal for the mascara.
An object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction including the container and the cap for the mount for housing the accessory tool, the seal, the restricted opening and the common mount for the applicator and the accessory tool, the mount acting as a cap or closure for the container. In the present case, the applicator is shown as an elongated fabric item which may in fact be or resemble a pipe stem cleaner, the accessory tool being shown as a comb or an eyebrow pencil.
A feature of the invention is the improved applicator and constrictor for restricting the fluid on the applicator on its removal from the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction having an improved and symmetrical appearance for the cap and the container, being preferably of the same uniform diameter throughout, with provision of rounded or ellipsoidal ends and a base having a corresponding socket in which the make-up kit may be removably supported in an upright position.
The improved appearance, as well as improved sealing and uniformity of diameter for the container and the cap, and an improved restricted opening for removing surplus mascara are obtained by providing the mount for the applicator and the accessory tool with external threads for the internal threads on an insert for the neck or open end of the casing, the insert itself being provided with a restricted opening inwardly of the threads, cooperating shoulders between the insert and the mount 2 plastic, the other being semi-rigid e.g., polyethylene, .the insert having a recess for the top of the casing which is fixed thereto and preferably of the same diameter as the housing cap which is arranged in a recess in the mount which acts as a sealing cap or closure for the container.
A further object is to provide a constrictor in the form of an insert for the neck of a casing the constrictor 112W- ing an opening in which the applicator slidingly fits, for removing excess mascara when the applicator is withdrawn.
For further details of the invention, reference may be made to the drawings wherein Fig. l is a side view of an eye make-up kit according to the present invention, partly in section and shown mounted in its base also in section.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig, -l with the opposite end portions broken away.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional 'view on line 3--3 of Fig. 1. p f
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side view in elevation with the cap removed to expose the tool, while Fig. 5 is a corresponding view' of the container removed to eXopse the applicator.
Fig, 6 is a side view partly in section of a modification wherein the tool is shown as an eyebrow pencil.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged viewpartly in section, of a centralpor'tion of the kit in Fig. 6.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the eye make-up kit 1 in Figs. 1 to 5 comprises a mount 2 cast in one picelfor example plastic of red or contrasting color, this mount having an outside diameter 3 which is preferably the same as the outside diameter 4 of the insert 5 and also the same as the outside diameter of the metal container 6 having a neck 27 which is cemented in a recess 7 in the insert :5, this same diameter feature also applying to the cap 8 which is removably held by friction in the cylindrical recess 9 in the mount 2. Cap 8 slips on'and off without rotation.
The unitary mount 2 serves as a closure for container and includes a socket 10in which the shank 11 of the comb 12 is cemented. The mount 2 at its opposite end portion is'provided with a reduced neck 13 having external threads- 14", the lower end of the neck 13 being further reduced to provide a shaft serving as a holder 15 having a socket 16 for the shank 17 of the applicator 18 which may be a pipe'stemcleaner and having'a cylindr'icalfabric exterior. Shank 17 is cemented in socket 16.
The container 6 is designed to conatin a supply of mascara or the like indicated at -19.
The mount 2 is of semi-rigid plastic material, Whereas the sleeve insert 5 is of rigid plastic such as polyethylene in order to'pro-vide an effective seal at the junction of their respective shoulders indicated at 20, mount 2 acting providing. an effective seal as one of them is of rigid as a cap or closure for container 6.
The insert 5 has'companion internal threads indicated at 21 for the threads 14 on the neck 13, and inwardly of the threads 21 the insert 5 has a sloping bore 29 which terminates at its lower end in an opening 22 which is very slightly greater than the outside diameter of the roundholder 15 and round applicator 18, the clearance being for example one or two thousandths of an inch, and serving to motor the amount of mascara on the applicator 13 and remove surplus mascara from the ap-' plicator shaft or holder 15 when it is withdrawn from the container by unscrewing the mount 2.,
' "hileother shapes may be employed, the shape disclosed" is preferredin being streamlined and symmetrical, rounded end portions 23 and 24 for the cap and container respectively. A' suitable base and support indicate'daat 25' has a socket 26 of the same shape as the end 24 of the container and removably receives it to support the eyemake-up kit'in an upright position;
As shown in Fig. 4, the "cap 8 can be removed from its frictional engagement with its recess 9 in the mount 2, to expose the comb or tool 12, the mount 2 remaining in place in the neck of the container 6 which serves as a handle for the comb.
As shown in Fig. 5, the cap 8 may be left on the mount 2 and both thereof unscrewed from the container 6, to withdraw the applicator 18 with its metered amount of mascara thereon, the cap 8 and mount 2 serving as a handle for the applicator 18.
In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the comb 12 of Fig. 1 has been replaced by an eyebrow pencil having a pencil portion 31 which is advanced or retracted by relative rotation between the head 32 and the body 33 of the pencil, with the cap 108 removed. The cap 108 is the same as cap '8 in Fig. 1 and other identical features are indicated in Fig. 6 by a reference number which is 100 greater than the reference number used in the form shown in Fig. 1. The body 33 has an external knurled portion 34 to receive a hollow casing not shown, when used in the conventional manner, the eyebrow pencil 30 being old and well known. The present invention provides a novel support and mounting for it in order to adapt it to its present purpose described a little later. In the well known construction, the body 33 has an extension 35 having a helical cam slot 36 which operates on a follower 37 which operates a friction clutch to advance and retract the pencil lead 31, the follower 37 operating in a longitudinal slot 38 in the tubular extension 39 of the head 32. The cam slot extension 35 at its lower end ro-tatably bears against the flange 40 on the tubular extension 39. Below the flange 40 the tubular extension 39 has a shank 41 for which the present invention provides a polyethylene holder 42 which fits in the insert 56, the holder 42 having a socket 116 for the shank 117 of an applicator 118, like elements 16, 17 and 18 previously described. The holder 42 at its upper end has a socket 43 in which the shank 41 rotatably fits, the
flange 4t} fitting against the flange 44 at the upper end of the socket 43. The outside diameter of the holder 42 is such that it is insertable into and makes a close fit with the opening 122 in the insert 56, to make a seal, a further seal being provided as the flange 44 fits in a recess 45 at the lower end of the threads 46 of the insert, the flange 44 being clamped between the shoulder 57 of recess 45 and the lower end 47 of the neck 48.
The mount 50 is of comparatively rigid plastic and corresponds somewhat to the mount 2 of Fig. 1, except that it is provided with a socket 551 at its upper end in which the knurled portion 34 is fixed, being also provided with an elongated bore 52 to house the cam slot extension 35. The mount 50 has a recess 53 to frictionally hold the removable cap 1&8. The upper end of mount St) is tapered as shown at 54 to merge with the taper of the pencil head 32. The intermediate portion of the mount 50 has an outside diameter as indicated at 55 which is the same as that of cap 168, of insert 56 and of the container 106, as described in connection with Fig. 1.
In a manner similar to that previously described, the cap 108 may be removed to expose the eyebrow pencil 30, or container 106 and with its insert 56 may be removed to expose the applicator 118. The eyebrow pencil lead 31 is advanced or retracted by rotating the head 32 with respect to the mount 50 in which the body 33 and its knurled portion 34 are fixed.
Various kinds of plastic may be used for the rigid and semi-rigid sealing combination and also various other shapes and dimensions may be employed. Also, the container 6 may be provided with a removable cap for use as a refill, this cap for example resembling mount 2 with a flat top below socket 1t) and with a shank 17 having external threads 14 to removably engage the threads of the insert 5. The bottom of the cap could terminate at the upper end of the holder 15.
