"2 ATTORNEY United States uPatent sUN TAN LorroN Arrucaron l Juanita Andrew Johns, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application october a9, 1956, serial No. 618,762 s claims. (ci. 1'5`z31) This invention relates to a sun tan lotion applicator.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide an applicator by which sun tan lotion can be distributed and applied to the back by the user herself without requiring the services of another.
It is another object,` of the invention to provide a sun tan lotion applicator in which pads onto which the lotion is poured, can be quickly and effectively attached to or removed from the body of the applicator.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a sun tan lotion applicator that has a collapsible handle which can be extended from the body of the applicator at the time the applicator is to be used and which can be collapsed upon the applicator when the applicator is not to be used upon the back or when it is to be carried in a bag. y y
It is still another object of the invention to provide a sun tan lotion, applicator in which the body has hingeable parts arranged in the nature of a compact and adapted to provide a storage space for the absorbent pads, a lipstick and a mirror or a bottle of the lotion.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a sun tanlotion applicator which is in the form of a compact having hingeable parts and an extensible handle wherein when the handle is extended the parts thereof so connect the hingeable parts together that they cannot be released from one another while the applicator is used by the handle when applying the lotion to ones back.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a sun tan lotion applicator having the above objects in mind, that is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, easy to assemble, inexpensive to manufacture, easily made adaptable for use, compact, durable, may be formed of plastic, ellicient and effective in use.
For other objects, and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompartying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention in which the applicator is in the form of a box with the cover being adapted to be closed upon the pad to hold the same in place and the handle extendable and adapted to lock the parts of the box together and prevent the release of the pad,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the applicator box taken through the cover and on line 10--10 of Fig. l,
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through the box on line 11--11 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the box taken generally on line 12--12 of Fig. 1 but with the cover of the box lifted,
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal elevational view of the applicator box with the handles of the applicator retracted thereupon,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a further form of the 2,936,475 `Patented May 17, 1 960 ice invention showing a box adapted to contain a lipstick, and having a mirror on the inside of the cover and a separable hingeable part on the box for retaining the pad thereupon,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the applicator shown in Fig. 6 with the pad removed and the parts in opened positions,
Fig. 8 is an end elevational view of the applicator assembly looking upon the handle end thereof and with the A handle retracted into the box, and
Fig. 9 is a horizontal sectional view of the applicator as shown on line 17--17 of Fig. 8.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 1 to 5, there is shown the form of the invention, wherein the pad supporting member is in the form of a bottom box body 60 having a cover 61 hinged to the box body at 62. The box body 60 is of suilicient size to contain a bottle 63 of sun tan lotion. A pad 64 is adapted to be Wrapped about the box body 60 to engage with saw tooth edges 65 and 66 at the opposite sides thereof against which the ends of the pad are brought to bear by opposite sides of the cover 61.
The covei 61 has grooves 67 and 68 on the opposite sides thereof and these grooves respectively have slots 69 and 70 in which respective bent ends 71 and 72 of respective extensible handle members 73 and 74 are slidable. In the forward end of the box body 60 are holes 75 and 76 into which the respective bent ends 71 and 72 may register and also respectively may register with holes 77 and 78 in the forward end of the cover part 61 whereby to lock the body and cover parts together positively when the handle members 73 and 74 are extended. A U-shaped handle member 80 has its legs slidably connected respectively at 81 and 82 to the respective handle members 73 and 74 so that they can be collapsed with these members into the respective grooves 67 and 68 as shown best in Fig. 5. Cover 61 has a catch portion 83 adapted to be extended over a projection 84 on the front face of the box body 60 in order to hold the cover thereupon at times when the handle is not fully extended and for its normal use. The handle member 80 has a projection 85 adapted to register with holes 86 and 87 in the cover and body parts to lock them together at times when they are not being used.
Referring now particularly to the further form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 9, 90 represents a box part having a front opening 91 through which a handle assembly 92 can be extended or retracted into the box part 90. A cover 93 is hinged to the box part 90 as indicated at 94 and has a snap projection 95 which can be extended into a recess 96 and the opening 91 in the path of the end of the handle assembly 92 to hold the cover upon the bottom box part and the handle assembly therewithin. The interior of the cover 93 is provided with a mirror 97. The rear of the box part 90 may contain lipstick 98 against which the members of the handle 92 may abut when they are retracted into the box part 90.
The collapsible members of handle assembly 92 are made of - flat pieces 100, 101 and 102. The handle part has a knob piece 103 on its outer end and a guide projection 104 on its other end engageable with a corresponding guide projection 105 on the member 101. The members 101 and 102 are similarly joined by guide portions 106 and 107 respectively formed thereon. The member 102 has a guide portion 108 that runs along a longitudinally-extending guideway portion 109, Fig. 7, in the bottom of the box part 90. When all of the members are collapsed into the box 90 through opening 91 the guide portion 104, 106 and 108 of the members siliency'of the lipstick against the projection V95 thatV extends: downwardly intoA the opening 91 thereby `to Ina-intain. the. handle members rigid and against rattle. Such force upon the projection 95 will also assist in. its` being held against displacement from the groove 96i A depression 110i is, provided in the member 103` and is adapted to maintain and receive the ball end of the projection 95; e
A pad 111 is'secured upon the bottom face ofthe box part 90 by a channel member 112 hingedfly connected at its rear endv tofthe boxv partl 90 andi having teethed sides 113 and 114 to engage-thepad so as to hold it more firmly against slippage'from between the channel member 1112 and the box part90.` The forwardf end of the channel has upstanding opposing projections 115 spaced suticiently to permit the knob. piece 103v to pass therebetween but which are separated suiciently at the top to allow a narrowed portion 116 in. the handle member 102 to pass therebetween when partly extendedy and to allow the channel memberl 102y to he hinged downwardly therefrom as seen in Fig. 7 for the purpose ofV engaging the pad 111 therewith. As soon as the pad has been: engaged the channel member 112;y with the padis brought over the body part 90 and the handle extended toits full distance.
outwardly from, the body 90 and the projections 115 of the channel part 112. lockedv in place bythe fullV width of the member 102. When: the handle is collapsed into the body part 90. and the: knob piece 103 located with.- inthe openingr 91 projections 115 are retained by an. end. projection. 117 as shown in. Fig. 8.
Highly decorative matter can also be disposed on the cover of these other forms of the invention in the nature of butterflies, seashellsi sequins, rhinestones, portraits and so forth. l
It should now be apparent that there has been provided aV sun tan lotion applicator having extensible handles by which the applicator can be used over the back of the user. It should also be apparent that there has been providedl an applicator in which the sun tan lotion can be stored in the applicator.
It should be further apparent that the applicator has been provided. inthe form of a compact adapted to con-v tain a mirror, a lipstick, bottle supply of lotion, or a supply of pads. 5
It shall be further understood that the pads which are used are highly absorbent and made of cotton or the like. inexpensive and are disposable after one application and that a sanitary construction has thereby been alforded.
While various changes may be made in the detailed construction, it shallbey understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope Vof the present` invention as dened by the appended claims.
