SHUTTER AND DOOR FASTENER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,712, dated July 2, 1861.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM PATTON, of 'lowanda, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Shutter and Door Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists,

firstly in applying to the sill of a window or door a semicircular band with notches in its periphery and having a catch attached to the window or door which by being dropped into one or the other of said notches serves to hold the door or window open at any re quired point. Secondly, in having a receptacle D, independent of said semicircle so that when the window or door is closed and latched it is made secure without connection with said semicircle, and should the semicircle be broken 01f by burglars or otherwise it would not affect the fastening of the window.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the drawingA, represents a semicircle attached to the window or door sill in any manner most convenient. In the drawing it is shown as having one end fastened to the sill and the other end to the building.

(Z (Z are the notches cut in the periphery of the semicircle for the reception of the catch B.

C, is a bent lever attached to the door or window, having at its end the catch B, to be dropped successively in the notches (Z cZ, as convenience might require to have the door or window entirely open or only partially so.

D, is the receptacle for the catch B,when the window is entirely closed, which receptacle is not at all connected with the semicircle, but is on the contrary entirely inclependent of it.

To operate the window, depress the handle c, which will lift the catch, when the window can be opened to the degree required. Tien by letting the catch fall in any one of the notches (Z, (Z, the window or door will be securely held at any point desired.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettei'sPatent, is

1. The arrangement as described of semicircular band A, with notches in its periphery to receive the catch B, at the end of bent lever C, attached to the window or door.

2. The above arrangement with receptacle D for the purpose as specified.
