AEROSOL FOUNTAIN TOOTH PASTE BRUSH Filed Jan. 26, 1965 2 SheetS-Sheet 2 INVENT OR Jamb Wagner United States Patent 3,316,923 AEROSOL FOUNTAIN TOOTH PASTE BRUSH Jacob Wagner, New York, N .Y. (Apt. No. 5, 1120 N. Main St., Jacksonville, Fla. 32206) Filed Jan. 26, 1965, Ser. No. 428,178 1 Claim. (Cl. 132-84) This invention relates to the art of manufacturing brushes and more particularly to new and useful improvements in an aerosol fountain tooth paste brush.
Tooth brushes and the container containing the cleaning paste or powder are often stored at different shelves or places in a cabinet with the result that one or the other often becomes mislaid making it irksome to clean ones teeth.
Furthermore, a tooth brush is used a number of times, using up the contents of a number of containers, whereby the tooth brush becomes worn, messy, caked and in an unsanitary condition.
It is the principal object of the present invention to avoid the foregoing disadvantages incident to cleaning the teeth by providing a combined tooth brush and valve-controlled container of tooth paste under pressure whereby the brush and container are always together and never separated.
Another object of the invention is to promote improved oral hygiene by providing a container of tooth paste with a new fresh tooth brush as an aid to better health and well being.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined fountain tooth brush and a valve controlled container of tooth paste under pressure whereby operation of the valve to discharge the contents is finger tip controlled and automatically provides a supply of tooth paste onto the bristles of the tooth brush.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fountain tooth brush with a built-in valve-controlled container of tooth paste under pressure, the tooth brush being adapted to a container attached to the container to be supported in an upright condition when stored away.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a fountain tooth brush with built-in means for actuating the discharge valve mechanism in a container of tooth paste having paste under pressure.
Yet another object is to combine a fountain tooth brush with a cap of a valve-controlled container of tooth paste under pressure as a unit.
A still further object is to combine a fountain tooth brush with a cap of a valve-controlled container of tooth paste under pressure as a unit, said unit having means to permit operation of the valve mechanism while the unit is in operative position.
Yet a further object is to provide a combined fountain tooth brush and tooth paste container, the tooth brush having finger tip control means for actuating the valve for discharging the contents of the container onto the brush.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a combined fountain tooth brush and container of tooth paste that is positive and eflicient in operation, sanitary, simple in construction and economical to manufacture, easy to manipulate, inexpensive to maintain, attractive in appearance, and takes up a minimum of room in traveling luggage or bathroom medicine cabinet.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIGURE 1 is a front perspective view of a combined 3,316,923 Patented May 2, 1967 tooth paste container and a fountain tooth brush embodying one form of the invention,
FIG. 2 is a rear perspective view of the cap and brush unit,
FIG. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2,
FIG. 4 is a bottom plan view of the cap and tooth brush unit of FIG. 3,
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 3,
FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of FIG. 3,
FIG. 7 is a perspective view showing the combined container and brush in use,
FIG. 8 is a side elevational view of the combined container and fountain tooth brush showing the cap and brush unit moved to operative position with tooth paste on the bristles of the brush, the head of the brush being shown in inoperative position in dot-dash lines,
FIG. 9 is a fragment dissassembled perspective view of the combined container and tooth brush showing the discharge spout in moved operative position in dot-dash lines.
Referring now in detail to the various views of the drawing, in FIG. 1 a combined container and fountain tooth brush assembly is shown and designated generally at 10. The assembly 10 comprises a metal container 12 with a tapered side wall 14, a broad flat base or bottom wall 16, and a slightly tapered top wall 18, terminating at its center in a neck 20. The side Wall 14 is rigid. A flexible spout or nozzle 22 of suitable plastic material is inserted in the neck and forms an extension thereof. The spout or nozzle is externally screw threaded as indicated at 24.
In accordance with the present invention, a combined cap and fountain tooth brush unit 26 is: removably mounted on the spout or nozzle 22. The unit 26 consists of a portion 28 constituting a cap for the container 12, and a tooth brush portion 30. The cap portion 28 has a solid tapered body 32 of plastic material, with a hollowedout portion 34 at the bottom end thereof and with a concentric central tubular portion 36 depending partlyinto said hollowed out portion, said tubular portion being supported by radial fins 38 disposed between the inner surface of the wall of the hollowed out portion and the central tubular portion 36, the bottom of the fins terminating short of the bottom end edge of the cap portion as seen in FIG. 3, providing a clearance 40 adjacent the bottom end of the cap portion. The tubular member 36 is internally screw threaded in order to thread unit on the nozzle 22.
The fountain tooth brush portion 36 is formed integrally with the cap portion 28 and has a flat body portion with straight side edges and rounded outer end, constituting a head 42, a fiat tapered handle portion 44 connected to the body portion by a two-way tapered neck portion 46. A passage or bore 48 extends centrally through the cap portion 28, handle 44, neck portion 46 and head 42 of the tooth brush communicating at one end with the axial opening in the nozzle 22 which communicates with the interior of the container. The other end of the passage 48 extends laterally intersecting the inner surface of the body portion of the tooth brush, forming a discharge outlet 50 therein. The inner surface of the head 42 of the tooth brush. is formed with a series of socket openings 52 to receive the ends of radial clusters 54 of hair lbristles.
The container 12 is equipped with valve mechanism indicated at 56 to which the nozzle 22 is operatively connected to permit discharge of the contents of the container under gas pressure, When the valve mechanism is opened by slight pressure to the back of the brush head by finger tip. This valve mechanism is opened by merely tilting the nozzle 22 by finger tip pressure to the back of the brush head in the proper direction, to wit, to the left 3 LS shown in FIGS. 1, 3, and 9, the flexibility of the nozzle ner mit-ting this operation.
It is to be understood that while there has been shown he tooth brush head detachably connected to the presiur-ized tooth paste container that it may'likewise be made 11 such a manner that it is permanently attached to the neck of the container for the flexing of the neck and the operation of the valve mechanism.
A prominent feature of the present invention is means to permit tilting of the nozzle or spout 22 for the purpose of actuating the discharge valve mechanism 56 while the unit 26 is on the container 12. For this purpose, the wall of the body of the cap 28 at its bottom end edge, on one side thereof, is formed with an inverted V-shaped notch 58 intersecting the end edge of the body of the cap. The face of the bottom end of the body of the cap 28 is slanted downwardly and outwardly as indicated at 60 to correspond with the top surface of the top wall 1 8 of the body of the container 12.
In use, the unit 26 comprising the cap 28 and fountain tooth brush 30 is threaded onto the spout or nozzle 22 and is fixedly secured to the container 12 forming an extention thereof. The bottom surface of the end edge of the cap portion 28 is seated on the top surface of the top wall 18 of the body of the container. When it is desired to use the contents of the container 12, it is merely necessary to grasp the container 12 in the palm of the hand and aim the notch 58 at the mouth 62, for example, as shown in FIG. 7, in order to clean the teeth. By simply pressing inwardly on the head 42 of the tooth brush 30 with the forefinger, the unit 26 will be tilted inwardly thereby tilting the spout or nozzle 22 opening the valve mechanism 56 whereupon the contents 13 of the container is discharged through the spout or nozzle, passage 48 discharge opening 50 in the head 42 of the tooth brush, piling up on the tops of the bristles 54 as shown in FIG; 8 preparatory to cleaning the teeth whereupon pressure on the head 42 of the tooth brush is released and the unit 26 automatically returns to valve closing position as shown in dot-dash lines in FIG. 8 by means of the flexible spout or nozzle 22, the opposing surfaces of the top wall 1 8 of the body of the container and the cap portion 28 engaging each other thereby limiting further movement in the valve closing direction.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A combined fountain tooth brush and tooth paste contrainer, said tooth brush having a flat head, an integral flat handle and bristles radiating from the head in one direction, said container having a hollow body, closed at both ends, one end having a discharge opening, a flexible nozzle connected to the discharge opening, said handle having an enlarged hollow portion serving as a cap for said discharge opening, valve mechanism in the hollow body of the container controlling the discharge of the contents through the discharge opening, said cap, handle and head having a common communicating passage communicating with the nozzle at one end, the other end communicating with an opening in the head leading to the bristles, said cap having a notch intersecting the bottom end edge and facing in the same direction as said bristles thereof to permit the cap to move in said one direction in order to flex said nozzle for opening the valve mechanism by finger tip pressure to the back of the brush head, the remainder of the bottom end edge of the cap contacting the end of the container preventing movement of the cap in any other direction whereby the container, cap and brush head constitute a rigid unit so that the container serves as a handle When brushing the teeth.
