(Cl. 49-381) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A door has a removable sheet that slidably fits into recesses formed in the door body and is fixedly held by removable retainers. A nose member has releasable tabs which protect the sheets exposed outer edge, yet can be opened to permit withdrawal of the sheet and a replacement substituted.
One object of my invention is to provide a door having a removable window or the like, with a retaining structure that provides protection for the window, yet makes it possible to remove the window if desired and replace it without having to change any part of my structure or to repair it.
Another object is to provide such a door with retaining structure that makes possible the removal and replacement of a window by one unskilled in this field while the door remains in its normal position.
A further object is to provide such structure that is easy to install on a door and is economical to manufacture.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawing, nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.

FIG. 5 is a fragmentary, front elevational view of that part of the door shown in FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary view similar to FIG. 5; but showing that part of the door shown in FIG. 3.
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary, perspective view showing that part of the door shown in FIGS. 4 and 5.
FIG. 8 is a longitudinal, sectional view showing a tube and screw forming a removable retainer for my door.
As illustrated, my door 10 has a main body having at the inner side a wooden or solid portion 14 next to which is a portion 16 of rubberized hair or other flexible material. Said body has a rear cover 18 and a front cover 20. At the inner side of said door body is an outer U-shaped attaching member 22 of metal or similar material that is outside said covers 18 and 20 and extends around and encloses a portion of a rotatable, supporting post 24. Screws 26 hold said attaching member 22 to said solid portion 14. A retaining pin 28 attaches said post 24 and said attaching member 22 together, thereby providing hinge means for the door.
In an exterior direction from said portion 16 said main body has two mounts 30 and 30a spaced apart and having holes 32 therethrough. Said space provides a recess into which the inner side of a removable sheet 34 extends. This sheet may serve as a window and is ordinarily either transparent or translucent, being made of a plastic, glass or other suitable material. It is referred to herein as a sheet, and is attached to said body at various places by a retainer member shown as having a female tube 38 that is internally screw-threaded and extends through said front and rear cover sheets 18 and 20, said holes 32 and said sheet 34. This retainer member has a screw 36 that enters and unites with said tube 38 to thereby retain the parts together. Such a retainer member, which is well known, is simple to remove when it is desired to remove the sheet 34.
At both the rear and front of said sheet 34, at the upper and outer side thereof, are rubber mounts 40 and 40a respectively that are spaced apart to provide a recess open at the free edge of said door to receive said sheet 34.
Extending above said sheet 34 at the outer side of the door is a permanent rubber nose member 42 that terminates as at 44 at its lower extremity which is at the upper edge of said sheet 34. Below and laterally inward of this point 44 I show a spacer member 46 which is desirable in order to present even planar surface for said cover 20.
A releasable nose member 47 is U-shaped and extends from a point underlapping said cover 18 laterally outward of the outer side of said sheet 34 and terminates as at 45, shown in said FIG. 6, at a point interiorly of and adjacent the outer side extremity of said cover 20. A said retainer screw 36 and tube 38 removably hold said covers 18 and 20, said nose member 47, said rubber mounts 40 and 40a, said spacer 46 and said sheet 34 together. This nose member 47 is removably attached, as by cement to said rubber mount 40a and when it is separated from the latter it provides a tab 47a as shown in said FIG. 6, thus removing a barrier to the removal of said sheet 34 at this point. Said tab 47a is at the open side of said recess between mounts 40 and 40a and adjacent the upper part of said sheet.
At the rear and front of said sheet 34, at the lower and outer side thereof, are rubber mounts 40b and 40c respectively that are spaced apart to provide a recess open at the doors free edge to receive said sheet 34. Thus the door supports said sheet in recesses at three sides.
Extending below said sheet 34 at the outer side of the door is another permanent nose member 48 which terminates at 50 at the lower edge of said sheet 34 and continues downwardly therefrom. Higher than and inwardly of this point 50 I show a spacer member 49 similar to said spacer member 46.
Another releasable nose member 52 is U-shaped and extends from a point underlapping said cover 18 and laterally outward of the outer side of said sheet 34 and terminates as at 51 at a point interiorly of and adjacent the outer side extremity of said cover 20. This nose member 52 is removably attached, as by cement to said rubber mount 40c and when it is separated from the latter it provides a tab 52a, as shown in said FIG. 7, thus removing another barrier to the removal of said sheet 34. A said retainer screw 36 and tube 38 removably hold said covers 18 and 20, said nose member 52, said rubber mounts 40b and 400, said spacer 49 and said sheet 34 together.
To remove said sheet 34 said nose members 47a and 52a are separated from said rubber mounts 40, 40a and 40b, 400, respectively, and pulled away sufliciently to permit said sheet 34 to slide out of said door, first removing the said screws 36 and said tubes 38 that hold it.
Said tabs 47a and 52a are sufliciently flexible, as shown, to be drawn away from one of said rubber mounts and later put back. They are located at the open side of said recesses, the tab 47a being at the upper margin of said sheet and tab 52a being at the lower margin of said sheet.
What I claim is:
1. A door comprising a main body hinged at the inner edge and having a window receiving opening therein extending inwardly from the outer edge thereof, a first pair of spaced window mounts fixed to said outer edge of the door at .the upper margin of the window opening and a like pair of spaced mounts fixed to said outer edge of the door at the lower margin of the window opening, a third pair of spaced mounts fixed to the door along the inner margin of the window opening thereby providing window sheet receiving recesses at three sides of the opening, a window sheet mounted in the opening and supported between the spaced pairs of mounts a first nose member outside of and normally adjacent one of said first pair of mounts and extending beyond the outer side of said-sheet and having a releasable portion outside of and normally adjacent the other of said first pair of mounts, a second nose member outside of and normally adjacent one of said second pair of mounts and extending beyond the outer side of said sheet andhaving a releasable portion outside of and normally adjacent the other of said second pair of mounts, and removable retaining means extending through said body, said first pair of mounts, said first nose member and said sheet, and other removable retaining means extending through said body, said other pair of mounts, said second nose member and said sheet both of said releasable portions being located at the open sides of said recesses respectively adjacent the upper and lower margins of said sheet.

A door as set forth in claim 1, said body embodying a rear cover and a front cover, and a spacer between said front cover and one of said first pair of mounts and later ally inward beyond one end of said first nose member, andl a second spacer between said front cover and one of said second pair of mounts and laterally inward beyond one; end of said second nose member.
3. A door as set forth in claim 1, each said retaining; means embodying a tube interiorly screw-threaded and a. screw extending into and screw-threadedly connecting withv said tube.
4. A door as set forth in claim 2, both said releasable portions terminating laterally outward of and adjacentv said front cover.

Claims (1)

1. A DOOR COMPRISING A MAIN BODY HINGED AT THE INNER EDGE AND HAVING A WINDOW RECEIVING OPENING THEREIN EXTENDING INWARDLY FROM THE OUTER EDGE THEREOF, A FIRST PAIR OF SPACED WINDOW MOUNTS FIXED TO SAID OUTER EDGE OF THE DOOR AT THE UPPER MARGIN OF THE WINDOW OPENING AND A LIKE PAIR OF SPACED MOUNTS FIXED TO SAID OUTER EDGE OF THE DOOR AT THE LOWER MARGIN OF THE WINDOW OPENING, A THIRD PAIR OF SPACED MOUNTS FIXED TO THE DOOR ALONG THE INNER MARGIN OF THE WINDOW OPENING THEREBY PROVIDING WINDOW SHEET RECEIVING RECESSES AT THREE SIDES OF THE OPENING, A WINDOW SHEET MOUNTED IN THE OPENING AND SUPPORTED BETWEEN THE SPACED PAIRS OF MOUNTS A FIRST NOSE MEMBER OUTSIDE OF AND NORMALLY ADJACENT ONE OF SAID FIRST PAIR OF MOUNTS AND EXTENDING BEYOND THE OUTER SIDE OF SAID SHEET AND HAVING A RELEASABLE PORTION OUTSIDE OF AND NORMALLY
