SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,146, dated December 28, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVIIOHAEL DEERISG, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented same'movement of the treadle which tightens the pulley against the belt and starts the hammer releases the brake, while upon releasing the treadle the tightencr-pulley is released and the brake is applied, thereby stopping the hammer.
The object of this invention is to provide ready means for rendering the tightener-pulley adjustable, so that it can be applied to either side of the belt, as circumstances may require, and so that it can be adjusted toward and from the belt; also, to make the treadle adj ustablc, so thatit can be raised and lowered.
My invention consists to that end of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a power-hammer provided with my improved belt-tightener arranged to bear against the left-hand side of the belt. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in liney 1 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section in line zz, Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5isa fragmentary side elevation, showing the tightener-pulley arranged to run against the right-hand side of the belt.

A represents the frame of the hammer, B the anvil, G the hammer-head, D the helve, c the horizontal driving-shaft, and E the connectingrod whereby the helve is operated from the driving-shaft, all of an ordinary or suitable construction.
F represents the driving-pulley, secured to one cndof the driving-shaft e in the usual manner, and f represents the slack belt by which the power is transmitted to the pulley 9 represents the tightener-pu-lley, mounted on the upper end of the long arm 9 of alever,

K represents the treadle, which extends in the form of a bow around the anvil B, in the usual manner, and which is pivoted upon a transverse shaft, is, extending through the lower portion of the frame A.
L represents an elbow-lever, secured to one end of the shaft near the driving pulley F, and having its lower horizontal arm, Z, connected with one end of the treadle, while its 7 upper arm, Z, is connected with the rod J, so that the tightener-lever G is actuated by the treadle through the'mediuxn of the elbow-levcr L and rod J. The upper arm, Z, of the elbow-lever L is provided witha horizontal 7 slot, m, in which the front end of the rod J is adjustably secured by a bolt, or. By adjusting the rod J on the arm ZjtheleverGis swung on its pivot, thereby adjusting the tightenerpulley 9 toward and from the belt, as may be8o necessary to produce the proper tension on the belt.
The treadle K issecured to the lower arm, Z, of the elbow-lever L by a pivot-bolt, n, and an adj usting-bolt, n, the latter passing through a segmental slot, a", formed in the lower arm, I, of the elbow-lever concentric with the pivotbol't n.
0 represents the brake-pulley secured to the opposite end of the driving-shaft e, and P repo resents the brake-lever which is secured to the shaft is adjacent to the brake-pulley, so as to bear against the front side of the brake-pulley when the brake is tightened. The lever P is provided with a horizontal arm, 1), which ex- 5 tends forwardly from the shaft is, and to which the adjacent end of the tr'eadle is secured by a pivot-bolt, q, and adjusting-bolt q. The latter passes through a segmental slot, Q2, formed in the arm 1) concentric with the pivot-bolt q. 103 The pivot-bolt n is arranged in line with the pivot-bolt q, and the adj usting-bolts n and q turbing the adjustment of the tightenerlever- G and brake-lever P. When the treadle has been adjusted, it is clamped in position by the adjusting-bolts n q, whereby the treadle is rigidly secured to the elbow-lever L and brakelever P, so as to swing on the shaft k as a fulcrum.
Rrepresents a weighted arm secured to the brake lever P, and extending baekwardly from the fulcrum thereof, so as to raise the treadle and applythe brake when the treadle is released. v
When the tightener-pulley g is required to bear against the left-hand side of the drivingbelt, the connecting-rod J is attached to the upper arm, z, of the tightener-lever G, as represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 4. When the tightener-pulley is required to bear against the right-hand side of the driving-belt, the tightener-lever G is reversed and the connectingrod J is attached to the lower arm, i, of the lever, as represented in Fig. 5. In either arrangement of the parts the tightener-pulley and brake are applied by depressing the treadle and released by releasing the treadle. The
4 hammer is by this means readily adjusted to with the driving-pulley and treadle, of a reversible tightener-lever, G, provided with two arms, '5 t", onopposite sides of its fulcrum, and a rod, J, whereby the treadle is connected with either of the arms 45 i, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the elbow-lever L, tightener-lever G, and connecting-rod J, of the treadle K, pivotal! y connected with the elbowlever L, whereby the front end of the treadle can be raised and lowered, substantially asset forth.
5. The cornbinatiomwith thetightener-lever G, connecting-rod J, elbow-lever L, and brakelever P, of the treadle K, adj ustably connected with said elbow-lever and brake-lever, whereby the front end of the treadle can be raised and lowered, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the brake-lever P and elbow-lever L, of a treadle adjustably attached to said brake-lever and elbow-lever, a removable tightener-lever, G, and an adjustable connecting-rod, J, whereby the elbow-lever L is connected with the reversiblev tightener-lever G, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with the elbow-lever L and brake-lever 1?, provided, respectively, with segmental slots n (f, of the treadle K and fulcrum-bolts n q and adjusting-bolts n q,whereby the treadle is adjustably secured to said elbow-leverand brake-lever, substantially as set forth. I
8. The combination, with the reversible tightener-lever G, provided with arms 1' t" on opposite sides of its fulcrum, of a connectingrod, J, an elbow-lever, L, provided with slots at and 91*, a bolt, m, by which the connectingrod is adjustably secured in the slot m, a treadle, K, and a fulcrum-bolt, n, and adjusting-bolt n, by which the treadle is adj ustably secured in the slot n, substantially as set forth.
