FOREIGN PATENTS 0R APPLICATIONS 520,862 7/1953 Belgium ..401/17 Primary Examiner-Lawrence Charles Attorneyl'lane, Baxley & Spiecens [57] ABSTRACT The embodiment shown in the drawing comprises a central cylindrical member which at each end is formed with internally threaded sleeves meeting a solid area from which integrally project oppositely directed rods, one of the rods carrying, in the said embodiment, an eyeliner narrow brush, and the second rod carrying a spiral mascara applicator. The assembly includes two cover members, each of which is a reservoir for the appropriate cosmetic, and each cover member serves as a handle when the opposite cover is removed for use of the particular applicator exposed when said cover is removed. The reservoir in each cover lies toward its closed end, forwardly of which is an internal cover wall formed with an aperture for passage of the rod and applicator, but the wall closely having slidable contact for the latter and serving both as a complementary closure for the reservoir and as a wiper for the rod and applicator. The construction provides a double cosmetic dispensing applicator in small space, and one which can be safely carried, a fully operative size being, for example, less than the diameter of the usual lipstick and only about one third longer.
4 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures DOUBLE DISPENSING APPLICATOR WITH TWIN RESERVOIRS The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1, is a longitudinal section through an embodiment of the invention.
FIG. 2 is an exterior view, from the side, of said embodiment.
FIG. 3 is a view from the side of the central member of the assembly with its integrally-projecting rods and applicators, the central member being shown with a cover sleeve, which in practice is preferably of bright material and decorative; and FIG. 4 is a sectiom on line 4-4, FIG. 1.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 3, it will be seen that the assembly comprises a central a base member 1 which at each end is formed with internally threaded sleeves meeting a partition wall la from which project ppositely directed rods 2 and 3. Rod 2 at its end carries an eye-liner narrow brush 4, and rod 3 carries at its end a mascara applicator, which is shown as spiral in form at 5.
The assembly includes two cover members, shown at 6 and 7, each of which has a reservoir for the appropriate cosmetic or other fluid, and in each cover member spaced from its closed end is an apertured wall 8. In the embodiment shown wall 8, in each case, is the end of a liner or sleeve 8x being press-fitted or otherwise firmly held within its cover per se. The end of the sleeve is reduced and externally threaded to be received within one end of the center member 1. The reservoir in each cover member is indicated by the letterR.
In the drawing the clearances between apertured walls 8 and rods are enlarged for purposes of clarity in the illustration, and in practice the rods will have close sliding fit in the apertures. The ends of the rods, as indicated in the drawings, are tapered to be readily inserted into the said apertures.
In the use of the device, the appropriate cover is rotated to unthread it and then drawn outwardly to expose the desired applicator. In so doing, the rod remains fixed to the center member 1, and wall 8 of the cover is drawn over the applicator end of the rod with wiping action, and of course the reservoir follows the cover. The appropriate applicator thus being exposed, the twin cover is used as a handle for use of the exposed applicator.
The invention enables manufacture by relatively simple plastic molding and ready insertion of the applicator members into the ends of the rods, and it will be understood that in practice the device will be one-half, or
less, the size shown in the drawing for clarity of illustration. In FIG. 4, there is shown an internal reinforcing sleeve 6x for the cover 6, but this is non-essential.
I claim:
1. A cosmetic device for selectively applying either one of two cosmetic fluids, said device comprising in combination:
a generally tubular base member including a crosswise partition waIl intermediate its length;
a pair of applicator members each including a rod and an applicator secured to one end of the respective rod, the other ends of the rods being integral with the opposite sides of said partition wall coaxially with the bas member; and a pair 0 generally tubu ar cover members closed at one end, the open ends of said cover members being engageable with the opposite ends of the base member for releasable attachment therein, each of said cover members including a crosswise partition wall having a central opening, the spaces between said crosswise partition walls and the closed ends of the cover members each constituting a reservoir for cosmetic fluid to be applied,
the length of each rod and the position of the apertured partition wall in each cover member being so correlated that upon attachment of the respective cover member to the base member the applicator and the rod end mounting the same protrude through the respective wall aperture into the reservoir in the cover member, and the peripheral outline of each aperture and the cross-sectional area of the respective rod being so correlated that excess cosmetic fluid adhering to the respective applicator and rod is wiped off upon detachment of the cover member from the base member and thus withdrawal of the respective applicator from the respective reservoir.
2. The cosmetic device according to claim 1 wherein a liner is fitted in the open end of each cover member protruding therefrom, each of the apertured partition walls in the cover members being secured to the inner end of the respective liner thereby forming an end wall therefor.
3. The cosmetic device according to claim 2 wherein the inner wall of the base member ends and the outer wall of the protruding liner ends are threaded for threaded engagement of said walls thereby releasably attaching the cover members on the base member.
4. The cosmetic device according to claim 1 wherein a sleeve is fitted into each end of the base member, said sleeve being closed at its outer end by apertured end wall, the respective rod extending through said end wall thereby steadying the rod.
