UNITED STATES AXEL R. GUSTAFSON, or MARINETTE, WISCONSIN.
BLACKlNG-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,879,6ated January 24, 1888.
I Application filed September 6, 1887. Serial No. 248,9i8. (No model.) i v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL R. GUsTAFsoN,
in the State of Wisconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the My invention relates to blacking-brushes; and it consists in certainpeculiarities of coninafter described with reference to the accom panying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
:In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a blackingbrush constructed according to my invention;
view of the brush by which the blacking is applied.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a polishing-brush, to which is secured folding section,]3, in order that said handle may be made to take up less room, so that the entire device may be packed in a small case or As illustrated, the stationary portion of the handle isprovidedwith a hook, at, that en-' gages a catch, 1), on the folding section B, in order to hold the latter in positionfor use;v but it is obvious that other suitable means may be employed for the same purpose.
To the back of the polishing-brush A, at its forward end, I secure a reservoir, 0, that is preferably provided with a centrally-depressed and removable top or cover, D, the latter be'-- ing in turn provided with a series of perforations, 0, and a flange, d, .as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
To the top or cover D of the reservoir ispivotally connected aperforated plate, 11, provided with an arm, e, that extends out through a slot,
suitably secured to this arm is a shield, e, that covers said slot. By a movement of the arm 6 the perforations in the plate E are brought in or out of register with those in the top or cover D of the reservoir 0, the latter being, designed to contain liquid blacking,--that is prevented by the shield e from escaping through the slot f in said top or cover when the brushis in use."
Removably secured to the flanged top or that is employed for spreading on the blacking, and the back g of thisbrush is hollowed out, as shown at h, and has a central perfoia tion, 4;, from which radiate a series of grooves or gutters, j, that conduct the liquid blacking V to said'perforation, from whence it finds its way to the point of the spreading-brush when the entire device is inverted and the plate E adjusted to, bring its perforations into register with'the ones 0 insaid top or cover.
Having thus'fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by slot f, perforated plate E, provided with an I arm, 6, a shield, 6, carried by the arm, and the spreading-brush F, having an opening'in its back, as set forth.
In testimony that I claiin'the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Marinette, in
thecounty of Marinette-and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses. I AXEL It, GUSTA'FSON.
. Witnesses:
E. G. EASTMAN, S. E. EASTMAN.
