POCKET TOOTH-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,080, dated March 27, 1888. Application filed March 30, 1887. Serial No. 233,089. (No model.)

Be it known that we, ADRIAN F. BOUTON and KENT K. STEARNs,-citizens ofthe United States, and vresidents of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain'new and useful Improvementsin Pocket Tooth-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to the mechanical coustruction of a tooth-brush adapted to be carried in the pocket or for packing in a valise.

Referring lto the drawings, Figure 1 is a full side view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig l, the toothbrush being in a position for use inboth of the above figures. Fig. 3 is a top view of the device ready tobe placed in the pocket. Fig. 4 is an end view of Fig. 3, theyend oonsidered being the right-hand end. 4Fig. 5 is a sectional view of Fig. 2 at the line X. Fig. 6 is a sectional view at the line Y. Fig. 7 shows the same as Fig. 3, except that the open or right-hand end is provided with a cap or cover; and Fig. 8 is a view of the part which immediately supports the brush, shown in cross-section, and provided with a rubber disk which prevents the entrance of water into the tubular portion of the device.

The toothbrush in general consists of the combination of an inclosing-tube, a, closed at one end by the disk b, which carries a helical spring, c, a brush-support, d, carrying a brush, e, and a clamping-spring, f, a projection or button, g, fastened to the free end ofthe spring f, two holes, h and h', the former being located near the closed end ofthe tube and the latter near the middle, a projection, i, within the tube and located in a groove, k, in the said support d, and a groove, Z, also in the part d, said groove containing the spring f, which is fixed at the right-hand end of the groove Z, and the coilspring o, pressing against that end of the support d farthest from the brush e.

When it is desired to put the brush into the pocket, the button g is pressed through 'the hole h', and the support d is pushed into the tube a until the button g springs into the hole h, where it causes the brush to be retained within the tube. A cap or cover, m, may then beplaced upon the open end, in order that the brush may be kept clean.

In order to usefully apply the membrane n to the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4,

5, 6, and 7, it may be necessary to vary the proportional dimensions of the device, which can easily be done by those versed in the art.

The surface of the tube, which serves as a handle,may be covered outwardly with an ornamental coating of the substance known as agaloid.

order to prevent its wearing out too quickly. v i

The proportional dimensions of the device may be altered withoutinterfering with the spirit of the invention.

- We claim as our inventionl. In a tooth-brush, the combination of a y tube closed at one end and open at the other and provided with apertures h and h', a brushsupport located in said tube, a spring between the closed end of the tube and the brush-support, and asecond spring having one endfastened to said support, the other end carrying a projection which fits in one ofthe apertures,

and the second spring being located in a groove in said brush-support, and suitable means forpreventing the rotation ofthe brushsupport in the tube.

2. In a tooth-brush, the combination of a tubular handle closed at one end, the sliding brush, and a. rubber membrane mounted upon the stem of the brush and serving to close the 5 open end of the tubular handle when the Witnesses:
