SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,984, dated October 9, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ASA K. OWEN, of Lake Geneva, in the county of Walworth and State of \Viseonsin, have invented a new and Improved Binder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- ,Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved binder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the under surface of the movable support.
Similar letters of reference indicate corrc spending parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a binder for temporarily holding a number of sheets of paper in the form of a pad.
My invention consists in a shallow box provided with a spring-actuated support for lifting and clamping the paper, and having inholding the paper, allas hereinafter morefully described.
The box A, forming the body of the binder, is provided with a bottom, a, with a ledge, b, projecting inwardly over one end of the box, and right-angled plates 0, attached to the opposite end of the box and projecting inwardly beyond the end of the box. To the box A is fitted a support, B, capable of moving freely up and down within the box, and to the inner surface of the said support B are attached two bow-springs, C, which rest upon the bottom of the box and press the support upward. To the under surface of the support B, at one end, is attached a finger piece, D, which extends through a semicircular notch, d, in the end of the box A.
The sheets of paper to be held by the binder are inserted between the ledge b and the support B after pressing down the end of the support nearest the ledge b, when the support is allowed to spring up and clamp the ends of the sheets, and the opposite end is depressed by means of the fingerpiece D, and the paper 5 sheets areinserted underneath the ends of the right-angled plates 0, when the support is released and the paper sheets are clamped in the position of use.
When itis desired to remove one of the sheets from the hinder, the support is depressed by means of the finger-piece D, and the front end of the sheet is removed from underneath the right-angled plate 0, when the opposite end may be drawn out from under the ledgeb without disturbing the other sheets.
It is obvious that spiral springs may be substituted for the bow-springs, and that screws, levers, or wedges maybe used instead of springs. Thereforeldo not limitor confine myselfto the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the box A, provided with the ledge b, the right-angled plates 0, and notch d, with the support B, provided with the springs G and the linger-piece D, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the box A, provided with a projecting ledge, b, at one end, right-angled plates 0 at the opposite end, the horizontal members thereof projecting over the upper edges of said end, and a notch, (2, formed in the upper edge of said end, of the movable support B, provided with springs upon its under face for normally forcing said support upward, said support provided with a finger-piece, D, projecting in the slot 61, whereby said end of the support may be depressed independently of its opposite end, sub- 8( stantiall y as and for the purpose set forth.
, ASA K. OWEN.
