UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARK POLLEY, OF NEWV BERLIN, FLORIDA.
WEATHER-STRIP;
SPECIFICATION forming part .of Letters Patent No. 405,272, dated June 18, 1889.
Application filed December 20, 1888. Serial No. 294.297. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
a front View of a door having my improved weather-strip applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 00 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail rear View of the weather-strip, showing the springs arranged thereon. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the swinging leaf swung down.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the door secured within the doorframe B by hinges, in the usual manner.
0 designates the weather-strip, consisting of the base-strip D, secured to the door, the swinging leaf E, hinged to the lower edge of the base-strip and swinging outward therefrom, and the flexible strip F, secured between the lower edge of the leaf E and the door. The base-strip D' is provided with Vertical slots G, through which screws H are passed into the door to adj ustably secure the said base-strip to the door. To the rear side of the base-strip, at or near the ends of the same, I secure the leaf-springs I, which extend downward and have their.lower ends bearing against the rear side of the swinging leaf E. The strip F may beof rubber, felt, or any other suitable material, and may be secured to the door, although I prefer to secure it to a strip J, secured to the door in the same manner as the base-strip D. V
In practice the weather-strip is secured to the door, and the stripsD and J adjusted so as to cause the flexible strip F to form a loop which depends below the lower edge of the door sufficiently to bear upon the sill and effectually close the space between the door and the sill. When the door is open, the springs I will force the leaf E upward, thereby drawing the front portion of the flexible strip outward, so that the said strip will be raised out of contact with the sill and will not be worn away by moving over the same. WVhen the door is closed, the outer lower corner of the swinging leaf will contact with a stop K, secured to the door-jamb, and as the door continues to close will be thereby caused to move toward the door, so that the said strip will be compressed and projected downward, so as bear upon the sill.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple, efficien t, and durable weather-strip. The device is composed of few parts, so that it can be manufactured at a trifling cost and is not liable to get out of order.
The device can be readily adjusted, so as to ,cause the flexible strip to bear with more or less force upon the sill, and when being opened may be at once lifted from the sill by reason of the swinging leaf being forced upward and outward by the springs bearing against the same.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination of the base-stri p adapted to be secured to a door, the swinging leaf hinged to the base-strip, the springs secured at their upper ends to the base-strip and having their lower ends bearing on the swinging leaf, and the flexible strip having one edge secured to the swingingleaf and its other edge adaptedto be secured to a door, as set forth.
2. The combination of the base-strip adjustably secured to the door, the swinging leaf hinged to the base-strip, the springs having their upper ends secured to the base-strip and their lower ends bearing on the swinging leaf, the strip J, secured to the door, and the flexible strip havingits front edge secured to the swinging leaf and its rear edge secured to the 'strip J, as specified.
CLARK POLLEY.
