SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,017, dated March 29, 1892.

Be it known that I, ALFRED GARTNER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in Newark, county of Essex, and State of NewJersey,haveinvented certain newand usef ulImprovements in GumJ/Ioisteners and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple, ready, and reliable gum-moistener for use on envelopes, stamps, or other gummed articles, easily adjusted on a finger of the hand, and capable of use without interferingv with the use of a pen or pencil when writing and at little cost.

The invention consists in the new and improved gum-moistener and the combination and arrangement of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved gum-moistener, the finger being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the sponge or moistener removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the blank, from which the holder of the moistener is formed. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a moistener with an elastic liquidchamber arranged therein, and Fig.6 is a'top plan view of Fig. 5 with the sponge removed.

In said drawings, A, Fig. 4, represents a blank struck up or formed from one piece of thin suitable metal. This blank is formed with a central portion or rest a, and when used with a liquid-chamber this central portion is perforated with holes a, as shown in Fig. 6. Around this central portion are arranged triangular projections or points 1), adapted to be turned upward and inward to securely hold or clamp a sponge or moistener c on the central portion or rest a, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5. Between these clamps or points I) are elongated strips or clasps 01, adapted to be turned downward and inwardly curved, as ate, to form spring-clasps for a finger f, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5.

When the gum-moistener is desired for continuous use, an elastic Water or liquid chamber or receptacle 9, made of rubber or any elastic material, is inserted under the central portion a. and is held in position by the upper portion of the clasps d acting as aholdingspring. The upper surface of this receptacle 9 is perforated, as is also the central portion a, to allow the passage of the liquid to the sponge or moistener when the receptacle g is compressed by the finger.

In the drawings I have shown the blank as formed with three clamps and spring-clasps; but this number can be varied, as desired, this portion of my invention consisting of a single metallic piece, combining arest for the sponge, holding-clamps, and finger-clasps.

I do not intend to limit myself to the exact construction or shape of the various parts, as shown, as changes in form and arrangement can be made without varying from the scope of my invention.

When desired, the clamps or points b can be struck up from the inner end'of the springclasps 61, thus effecting a saving in the amount of material. The clamps b may also be dispensed with and the sponge or moistener secured to the central portion or rest a by means of wire or cord.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A gum-moistener adapted to be adjustably secured to a finger, consisting of a sponge or moistener, a rest for said moistener, clamps securing said moistener to said rest, and means for holding all said parts on a finger, said rest, clamps, and holding means being formed of one piece of metal, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. I

As a new article of manufacture,a gummoistener adapted for use on a finger, consisting of a holder with one or more'spring finger-clasps, said holder, with its spring finger clasp or clasps,being formedof one piece of metal, a moistener or sponge, and means for securing said moistener to said holder, substantially as described and set forth.

with a moistener or sponge, of an elastic perforated liquid-receptacle, a perforated rest for said moistener, clamps securing said moistener to said rest, and clasping-springs adapted to hold all said parts on a finger, said rest, clamps, and clasping-springs being formed of one piece of metal, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
