GEORGE L. wtrsiL, 0E PHILADELPHIA, rENNsYLVANIA'.
KNIFE PoLls'HEaAND GRINDER.
` Specification forming part .of Letters Patent No. 48,755, dated July 11, 1865.
To all ''whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. WrrsrL, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Combined Knife Polisher and Grinder; and I do herebydeolare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a -part of this specification, in which- Figure lis an elevation of one side of the polisher and grinder. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side of the machine. Fig. 3 is -a. vertical central section through the ma- ,Jchine.
Similar letters of Areference indic'ate corresponding parts in thes'everal figures.
` y invention consists in combining in a frameadevice for polishing knives and forks, and also a means for'sharp t ening knives, ,so that by'one hand the machine kcan be operated while theknife is'held by the other hand, the machine itself being clamped to a tableor other xed object, as will be hereinafter described'.
. yinventin also' consists in constructing the knife-polisher oftwo circular disks, and
4so applying these'disks upon a turning shaft be forcibly pressed together by li after described.V
-K To enable others skilled in theart to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operatiou.
In the ,accompanying drawings, A repre- ,sents a forked frame consisting of two upright standardsand two horizontal b, having' a thumb-piece on its end is tapped. ymeans of A the jaws a a and clamping-screw b the frame A l table or other'tixed object which maybe found convenient. A horizontal, square, or half-round shaft, c, hasits bearings inthe upright standillrds.of,frameiA,`and has affixed crank-handle, grindstone, B. t Between the standards two circular plates, C-,"are applied ou the shaft c, so that both disks willturn with it, but' allowed to'have K jaws, aa, through" the lower one-of which latter aclam pi n g-screw,.
can be quickly secured t'o il' end play. Between the hubs of these disks or circular plates and the supporting-standards A, I apply ou the shaft@ rubber or other suitable springs, y g, for the purpose of pressing thepolishing-surfaces of the disks together with an elastic or yielding' pressure. l
It' desirable, one of the disks, C, may be secured rigidly on its shaft, and the other disk allowed to yield; but I prefer As a square shaft (c) would have to be turned round at its bearings upon frame A, and as it is desirable to construct these in'achines'so that they can be afforded at a'small cost, I makea half-roundjshaft answer the, purpose. disks or plates C C are slightly (lished, as showu'ath h, Fig. 3, for the purpose of allowing a spare at their circumference for the free entrance ot' the knife-blades, and also for polishing the shoulders ofthe blades.
It' desirable, Athe disks may be allowed to have a slight wabbling movement on their shafts controlled by the springsgg, for the purpose ot' allowing' these disks thebetter to accommodate themselves Ato the tapering blades -emery-wheel oraeomposition containing eiuery` -or other suitable substances may be used for the grinding or sharpening ofthe knives.
What I claim n sfmy invention, and desire te secure by LettersvPatentfisf 1. The arrangement and construction ofthe frame .A 'a with the rubber springs g g, disks 'U C' li, and shaft c, substantially in the inanner described and represented.
2. 'Ifhparrangcnient of a bevel-faced grindstone, B, with the several partsnamed in the u y first claim, as herein described. d, and to --the opposite enda eno. L. wrrstL.
