Be it known that I, EMMA J. THURSTON, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Deming, in the county of Whatcom and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toothpicks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in tooth picks and scrapers, and pertains to a brush-handle having combined therewith a scraper and a pick, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.

The implement hereinafter shown and described is especially intended for cleaning of artificial teeth, as it is found that tartar frequently accumulates thereon and that a scraper is found necessary to scrape them and a pick necessary to clean the crevices.

The object of my invention is to provide a brush-handle with ascraper and a pick, either of which may be used, so that the ordinary handle or brush is presented for use when the pick and scraper are not being used.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved brush, the handle being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a view showing the scraper in position to be used. Fig. 3 is a View showing the pick in. position to be used. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detached view of the combined scraper and pick.

Referring now to the drawings, A indicates the handle, and B the brush. This brush B may be of any form desired, but is preferably rounded in cross-section, as shown at a, for the purpose of better adapting it to fit to the plate in the cleaning thereof.

The handle A is made in two sections 1) and c. The section b carries the brush B and is provided with a longitudinally-extending opening d, which is adapted to receive the scraper, to be hereinafter described. The section '0 is separate and distinct from the section b and is provided with a longitudinal opening 6, which is adapted to receive the pick.

The combined scraper and pick consists of a central body portion D, which is ofa diameter corresponding to the exterior diameter and contour ofthe sections b and c of the handle. Projecting in opposite directions from the central body portion D are the re- Serial No. 59,637. (No model.)

duced portions f and g. and g are adapted to fit snugly the outer ends of the openings (1 and e, which are formed, respectively, in the handle-sections b and c. I show in Fig. 1 the scraper within the opening of the section b, but this may be reversed by placing the pick within the section b, as will more fully appear hereinafter. When the combined pick and scraper are in the position shown in Fig. 1, then the sections of the handle are held firmly and solidly for the convenient use of the brush, while at the same time the scrapert' and the pick m are protected against injury and also from contact with the hand of the user. is to be used, the pick portion will be placed within the section b of the handle, as indi cated in Fig. 2, and when the pick portion is to be used the scraper portion will be placed within the handle portion 1), as shown in Fig. 3.

The function of the central body portion D is to hold the scraper and. the pick in their proper relative positions, as will be readily understood,.and in serving to prevent either the pick "or the scraper from entering the openings in the handle-sections sufficiently far to engage the inner end or wall thereof, and the portions f and g, snugly fitting the outer portion of the openings in the handlesect-ions, will prevent any lateral movement, and consequently any injury on account thereof, and also serve to hold the sections of the handles firmly in the proper relative positions when the pick and scraper are both inclosed within the handle, as in Fig. 1.

By means of a brush of the construction herein shown and described the user is provided with a scraper and a pick, either of which is adapted to be used for the purpose of cleaning artificial teeth and which will be found of great advantage and utility.

While I show the instrument inserted in the handle of the brush for use, it will be understood that the removable section of the handle could serve as a handle for the instrument.
