- This invention relates to attachments for dental tools; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which is designed to prevent saliva from the mouth entering the tool or coming in contact therewith, a further object being to provide an attachment for dental tools which may be removed and cleaned each time that the tool is operated and which is provided with an absorbent material which prevents saliva from entering the tool and which may be disinfected or sterilized as often as necessary and which may be changed frequently; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

ATTACHMENT FOR DENTAL TOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,951, dated October 22, 1901.
Application filed January 29,1901. Serial No. 45,200. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C; ROTH- KRANZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Dental Tools, of which the followingisa full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for dental tools; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which is designed to prevent saliva from the mouth entering the tool or coming in contact therewith, a further object being to provide an attachment for dental tools which may be removed and cleaned each time that the tool is operated and which is provided with an absorbent material which prevents saliva from entering the tool and which may be disinfected or sterilized as often as necessary and which may be changed frequently; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of an ordinary de n tal tool provided with my attachment; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the attachment removed from the tool; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the attachment in section; and'Fig. 4, a view similar to Fig. 2, on an enlarged scale, and showing the absorbent material in position.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 the body of an ordinary dental tool, into which is inserted in the usual manner a drill 6; but it will be understood that a grinder, polisher, or other instrument may be substituted for the drill 6 whenever necessary, and in the practice of my invention I provide an attachment of the class specified, which comprises a sleeve 7,

Within the end of the sleeve 7 which may be formed integrally with said sleeve or independently thereof, and this disk rests against the end of the body of the tool, as shown in Fig. 3, and adjacent to said disk is placed a packing-disk 12 of absorbent material, which may also be removed when de-, sired, and the packing or the absorbent material is held in place by a supplemental disk 13, and said supplemental disk is held in place by a screw-threaded cap 14, which is adapted to be screwed upon the end of the sleeve '7 or connected therewith in any desired manner.
The drill 6 or other instrument passes through the disks 11 and 13 and through the absorbent material 12 and the cap 14:, and said cap holds the disk 13 and absorbent material in position, and the cap 14 may be used to hold the absorbent material in position without the aid of the disk 13, if desired.
It will be understood that the tool is used exactly in the same manner as other tools of this class, and in practice the attachment may be removed from said tool after each opera tion and thoroughly cleaned and the absorbent material or disk 12 may be disinfected or sterilized at each operation and a new disk of absorbent material may be substituted for the old one whenever necessary.
By means of this device all saliva or other liquids from the mouth are prevented from coming in contact with the tool and from entering the end thereof, and the body portion of the tool and the interior thereof is thus kept clean at all times. 7
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. An attachment for dental tools, comprising a removable sleeve adapted to be passed on over the end of the tool, a disk of absorbent material adapted to be placed in the end of said sleeve and detachable members for holding said disk in position and through which the operating instrument of the tool passes, substantially as shown and described.
2. An attachment for dental tools, comprising a detachable sleeve, a disk placed Within the end thereof, a packing of absorbent material placed adjacent to said disk, and a removable cap connected with said sleeve, the operating instrument of the tool being designed to pass through said disk, said absorbent material, and said cap, substantially as shown and described.
3. An attachment for dental tools, comprising a sleeve which is adapted to be connected with and to inclose the end of the tool, a disk Within said sleeve and adapted to rest against the end of the tool, a packing of ab sorbent material placed adjacent to said disk, a supplemental removable disk placed adjacent to said absorbent material, and a detachable cap for the end of the sleeve adapted to hold the supplemental disk and the ab-
