Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed October 7,1905. $erial No. 281,797.
county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tooth- Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tooth brushes, and has for pensive device of this character which may be readily manipulated, and one which in practice will serve at a single operation to brush the front and rear faces and crowns of the teeth.
A further object of the invention is to provide a brush having a handle equipped with an instrument for scraping the teeth and cleansing the tongue.
' With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush showing one form of embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a slightly different embodiment of the invention. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will beseen that the brush, which is composed of any suitable material, comprises as a whole a handle 1 and a head 2, the latbeing equipped on its inner face with a continuous rubbing or cleansing surface preferably composed of bristles 3 applied to and arranged to project perpendicularly from the side portions 4 and crown 5 ofthe head 2, the side portions of which are curved in parallel relation and throughout theentire length of the whereby when the brush is in action, one of the side side wall the outer curvature of the row of teeth.
As seen in Fig. 1, the head 2 is extended'longitudinally relative of the handle 1, while in the form of of the handle, it being noted that in other respects the constructions are identical. The handle 1 is terminated at its rear end in a flattened angularly bent portion 6 constituting a scraper for removing tartar and similar accumulations from the teeth and for scraping the tongue. To facilitate its use it will be observed that the handle 1 is in the same plane as the crown portion of the head, so that, when the brush is placed over the teeth, it is only necessary to have the mouth open just far enough to allow the crown portion to pass between the teeth, thereby lessening the strain upon the jaws and preventing contact of the handle with the lips or gums.
In practice, the head 2 is seated over the teeth of the operator, the brush being thereafter manipulated in the ordinary manner for cleaning the teeth, the
front and rear faces and crowns of which latter will be simultaneously acted upon and cleaned in a single operation.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that in attaining these ends minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A tooth brush comprising a handle with a head therewith, said head being constructed substantially IT-shaped and longitudinally curved, the handle being arranged above one side of the head and integral with the central portionof the crown of the head so that the head will extend on opposite sides of the handle, rubbing surfaces secured continuously around the inner face of the head, and one portion or row or said rubbing surface depending vertically from the central portion of the head so as to contact with the edges or crown portions of the teeth, sub stantlally as specified.
In testimony whereof, I nfllx myslgnature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT ABRAMS.
