DENTAL IMPLEMENT;

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed December 10,1906. Serial No. 3?],034-
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Evans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State 01" Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Implements;
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertai-ns to meke -.1 ud use the sunieu'eference being had to the accompanylug drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to irnproveiuenls in dental ii'islrunients, and comprises an implement for removing substances from bet-weed the teeth by means of a thread.
- The object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which possesses the novelty and advantageous features hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
In the annexed drawings Figure I, is a front vertic'al elevation of the implement. Fig. II, is a side elevation. Fig. III is arcarelevation. Fig, IV, isa partial end View. Fig. V, is a general view'of the various parts detached and all in their proper relation. i
In a detail description of the inyent-ion, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
A designates the entire body portion of the impleare notched at their extremities and twisted into a suit able position to receive a thread; this thread is shown extendingfroni one fork to the other in Figsfl and 3; these prongs or forks are continuous with a hollow cylindrical shell K open at both ends and along a section of the front.
I3 is a'wnsher rounded on one side as shown in Fig. II; C is a piece of celluloid or other suitable material having an opening in one end and shaped at the other end into a tooth pick. i
D designates a flat-headed screw designed to pass through the tooth pick, the washer and the body of the instrument and toengage a. knurled thumb nut E by means of which the tooth pick and the wash er may be clamped against the body of the instrument.
.L designates a capsule or magazine containing dental floss such ascis commonly sold at drug stores and which is inserted into the holder or cylindrical body K o1 the metal walls of said holder. The tooth pick 0 is pivoted on'the screw D on the hack of the instrument and maybe clamped in any convenient position as shownet M, by means of the thumb nut E. When not in use, it is secured and the point protected by means of a. finger-like flap or projection R formed from and raised slightly above the baclc oi the holder shown in Figs. III-and IV.
S and T are slots through which the thread from the capsule may be conveniently passed through the body of the instrument and under the washer B when the latter is loosened.
To prepare the instrument for use, the capsule may be inserted as described into lheholder K and the th'riiad passed through the slot S and under th e washer B, then down the groove and over the notched end of the prong I over and up the prong H and again under the washerend through the slot T. It is then in a p0- sition to be secured firmly across the prongs of the instrument by tightening the thumb nut E. By loosening this thui nb hut, fresh thread may be drawn into the fork without re-threading'the instrument, and the portion used severed by friction across a sharp corner left at X, Fig. IV, or other suitable place. To facilitate the holding of thethread, a portion of the prongs or forks is grooved on the outside of the curved part as shown at J or by the section on line zz of Fig. I.
I claim:
1. A dental implement of the typc'speclfied, comprising a cylindrical body having a longitudinal slot on one side 'and extending the length thereof, and an out-turned zinnular groove around its circumference, thecnd of said body portion terminating in forks, :1 screw penetrating the portion of the Implement lyingbetween the cylindrical body and rlie forks, u washclpenetrated by said screw, and a thumb liut havingnu extended portlonnnd adapted to engage the screw, as herein shown and described.
In a dental implement of thc type specified, o. body stamped from sheet metal one end thereof being of cylln-- drical form with an intervening longitudinal slot, and an annular groove, said cylindrical portion being adapted to contain a thread capsule, the other end of said body tcrniinnting'ln prongs with notches on the ends thereof adapted to receive the thread, a screw penetrating said body adjacent to the prongs, a tooth pick pivoted on said .screw, a washer penetrated by thc'scrcw, said washer beingadupted to clamp the thread passed around the ends of the prongs, and a thumb nut adapted to frighten said washer.
In testimony whereof alfix my signature, in presence of two witnesses. i i CHARLES S. EVANS.
Witnesses C. M. Tnnonsrin, R. .T. MCCABTY.
