' f I WILLIAM JOHN DUN N, MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
' 'TELESCOPIG Aivrrcme.
specification of Letters Patent.
s Application filed December 4, 1808. Serial No.'468,040.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that, I, WILLIAM JOHN DUNN, a subject of the King of England, residing at the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have made a certain new and useful Improvement in Telescopic Articles, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to telescopic articles, such as tent poles, handles, rods, etc.
The object of my invention is to provide an article comprising a plurality of telescoping sections, with means for locking the.
sections against longitudinal movement; to
provide means for strengthening the arti-- cle at its joints, which strengthening means also serves to cover the locking means; and,
to provide means for preventing axial movement of the sections, at the same time permittin free longitudinal movement thereof when t e sections are unlocked.
A further object is to provide a slmple "means for closing the upper end of the uppermost section when the article is designed or use as a tent pole.- I
My invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawin s, forming part of this application, I have i lustrated a form of embodiment of my invention in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
re. 1 is an elevation partlyfin section,
showing a section extended; and, Fig. 2
shows a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawin s, 1 designates a plurality of tapered, tubular telescopic sections, in the end of one of which is disposed a block 2 carrying a spur 3. The pin 4 is disposed through the block and spur and through the wall of the section 1 leaving a slight projecting end to serve as a stop for the ferrules hereafter described.
Disposed in the lower end of each of the sections 1 is a block 5 provided with a recess 6. The spring pressed plunger 7 is disosed in the recess and is arranged to work into an o ening 8 provided in each of the upper en s of the sections 1, so that when the sections T are e xtended the will, be
is a ferrule 9 provided with a lower splayed edge 10. When the sections 1 are extended and locked the ferrules 9 are forced intoposition where the form a strengthening-band for the joints ormed between the ends of the sections 1 and at the same time they cover the locking means and prevent the ingress of dirt etc. When the sections 1 are closed or telescoped into each other the projecting end of the pin 4,.prevents' the ferrule 9 from being displaced entirely from the article.
To prevent axial movement.of the sections 1 with relation to each other so that the plungers 7 always register with the openings 8, and to prevent 'bindin each of the sections 1 is provided with'a ongitudinal rib 11, the ribs in each succeeding section fitting closely into the rib of each preceding sectlon.
Patented Dec. 7-, i909.
a spring pressed plunger in each of said recesses arranged to work in openings provided in the ends of the sections and fer-rules disposed on the sections and provided with splayed ends arranged to work .over the plungers. v 2. A telescopic article comprising a plurality of longitudinally movable sectlons provided with recesses, a plunger adapted to work in each of said recesses, ferrules disposed on the sections and provided with splayed ends adapted to work over the plungers, and means for preventing axial movement of the sections.
3. A telescopic article comprising a plurality of movable sections rovided with longitudinal ribs, each of sai sections having a recess in one end thereof, a spring pressed plunger in each recess, and ferrules mounted on the sections and provided with splayed ends arranged to 'work over the 4. A telescopic article comprising a pluwith splayed ends to coverthe p1ungers,subrality of sections provided with ribs adapted stantialiy as described. 10 to prevent axial movement of the sections, Inwitness whereof I have hereunto set my each of said sections having a recess in one hand in the presence of two witnesses.
